Top Resident Evil Video Game Characters

Updated on April 15, 2020

Resident Evil is a massive horror video game and movie franchise created by Capcom. It had tremendous success over the years since the release of the first Resident Evil game originally for the Playstation in 1996.

Spoiler-Free Story :

The story is basically about a corporation named Umbrella that, for their reasons, is spreading a deadly virus called the T-virus, which transforms humans into zombies and mutates other creatures as well. Your mission, as a S.T.A.R.S member or a cop or ..., is to survive through the apocalypse and end this nightmare.

The Resident Evil universe has a multitude of characters who each have their own compelling story, and all of them have tasted the Horrors of these lethal viruses first-hand. Today, I am going to be ranking the Resident Evil characters based on their appearances on the video games only. So the movies are excluded. (sorry Alice)

6. Chris Redfield

Chris Redfield was one of the first characters we got to know from the Resident Evil universe. He debuted in the original Resident Evil as one of the two main protagonists. He's a member of Racoon City's S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics And Rescue Services) alpha team.
Chris Redfield could easily earn the perfect soldier award. He's strong, enduring, loyal, and he's devoted to terminating Umbrella corp. no matter what.

His only fault is that Capcom decided to put him in the spotlight during the franchise's darkest years. As the main character in both Resident Evil 5 and 6 (the least loved by the community), Chris faced a lot of criticism due to his exaggerated designs and his enormous biceps; along with the famous 'boulder punch'. I mean, is that really the best Capcom could pull-off? A human punching a giant boulder?

5. Albert Wesker

He was first presented as the leader of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team (Chris' team) just to reveal himself as an agent working for Umbrella and try to exterminate his whole squad. In the later installments, he's become one of the most iconic Resident Evil villains.

At first, he was just this double agent who only cared about profiting from the outbreaks but he's gone way past that now. Not only did he create the Uroboros virus and spread it in Africa, but he also created a clone of himself with inhuman superpowers. Not to mention, he kidnapped and brainwashed fan-favorite Jill Valentine.
Albert Wesker is a shady character who always operates from the shadows, and we don't know anything about him. All we know is that he is always behind those catastrophes and always up to no good.

4. Claire Redfield

Claire may seem like an ordinary college student at a first glance, but she is a Redfield; so zombie slaying and gun shooting are basically in her blood. She was first introduced in the original Resident Evil 2 back in 1998.
She was looking for her brother Chris in Racoon City, ironically, during the outbreak. She managed to escape with Leon Kennedy's help but her life took a drastic change since then. Although we didn't get to see much of Claire in the main titles, the little time we got with her was enough for us to enjoy her story and see how the Redfields are natural-born survivors and can live through any skirmishes.

3. Ada Wong

Ada Wong is arguably the most mysterious character in the Resident Evil franchise. We don't even know if Ada's her true name or not. No one can understand if she's good or bad, right or wrong... everything is possible with her. Whether she's collecting virus samples for her employer (mostly Alber Wesker) or selling them to the highest bidder, you can always find Ada operating in the backstages of any virus outbreak.

She did help Leon quite a lot in many situations, yet she can never be trusted. One of the reasons I personally love the mysterious woman in the pink dress is that, despite her complicated storyline (she discovers clones of herself), she does her job in style. She's always traveling light with just a handgun and a grappler but she packs a serious punch. Besides, her grappler stunts and tricks are terrific. No matter what situation she's in, Ada always manages to survive and I really hope we get to see more of her.

2. Jill Valentine

Jill Valentine is Chris's trusty partner and the master of unlocking. She also debuted in the original Resident Evil, as a member of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team investigating the Spencer mansion. Later, she got caught in Racoon City's outbreak where she encountered the fabled Nemesis.

Jill could've easily been number one on this list since her fighting and survival skills are quite fascinating and she's one of the toughest S.T.A.R.S. members. But unfortunately, she got kidnapped and brainwashed by Albert Wesker and we saw nothing of her since Resident Evil 5 (maybe also because of the Jill sandwich joke).

I would say that Capcom wasted Jill's potential, however, she shined the brightest in the series early days and she deserves a little rest. Fortunately, the Resident Evil 3 Remake dropped and we can once again see her in action.

1. Leon S. Kennedy

I believe Leon is the best character in the Resident Evil universe. Not only was he the main protagonist in the best two games in the series, but he also showed great potential fighting bio-weapons despite being a simple cop. That's right, rookie cop Leon got caught in Resident Evil 2's outbreak on his very first day of service. Yet he managed to escape and defeat the evolved Tyrant: Mr. X with Claire and Ada's help.

His formidable survival skills got him a job as a professional governmental agent and he was sent, by the President himself, to rescue his abducted daughter Ashley in the events of the fantabulous Resident Evil 4.

Perhaps Leon's consistent luck being in the spotlight during the franchise's greatest times is what got him this placement. But we all got to admit that he also deserves it: He can survive through any pickle and he always comes up smelling like roses.

I hope u enjoy this article and stay tuned for more Resident Evil content

I'm just letting you know I answered your question, then you proceeded to try to invalidate my answer as if you didn't just ask me a question. Contextually, just to humor you, what you have said to me thus far implies something contrary to your claims, but I'll take your claims at face value for your sake.

Perhaps I just mistook your tone for something it was not, but I don't think so. Good luck here on HubPages and keep writing!

It's just one game and i didn't mention EVERY RE Game there is . Besides i was just giving my very personal opinion . No need for you to be rude . And just to let you know i played all the games and my knowledge is faar from superficial. I just didn't want to complicate things and i didn't include many details intentionally

So that there is no further miscommunication, I was answering your question, and you tried to invalidate my response which answered your question clearly and near-perfectly. I'm also adding in that including lore from ORC would do your lackluster character descriptions some justice, especially Chris because they made him much more human and less buffed-out juice-head for the game. I wasn't trying to argue you or put down your article until now. I question how valid the opinions within this can be, seeing as how all the knowledge is extremely surface level and concise to the point of being vague.

Jill, Ada, Leon, Chris, Claire, Sherry, and even William Birkin are all featured in ORC. So no, I don't see where you're coming from if you're trying to say these characters aren't featured in the game. Thanks for your continued condescension, and enjoy my sarcasm.

Yes i saw your Article and i do appreciate and respect your love towards ORC. I wish i would've included it but as you see i only talked about the main charcters only. ORC wouldn't be a perfect fit in this article if you see where i'm getting. Thank you for the feedback and the interaction.

No, not really at all. It is a side arc that runs slightly congruent to RE 2 and RE 3, and many consider it to not be canon with the other games. Rather than being some special, all-important character, you are an expendable group of USS operatives. You get to see things from the side of Umbrella, how Umbrella operates, and of course the special forces who try to thwart their operations.

Basically, ORC is all the happenings that are going on behind the scenes of the main stories. A filler episode, if you will, but a really amazing filler episode with deep lore that offers a new facet of the series. I wrote an article on it recently, was feeling nostalgic for it.

Hi Kyler . I was just trying to rank charcters based on some parts of their storylines and i wasn't exactly interseted in the games themselves (that'll be for another day) and i agree Operation Racoon City is really great and all but it's basically the same story as RE 2 right ?

I'm sad that RE: Operation Raccoon City wasn't mentioned anywhere in this! That game is so underrated and needs some much-deserved love!
