Interesting Guns in Gaming

A lot of work goes into a video game when creating a weapon. For most video games, a weapon has to be unique, depending on its power levels it has to make the player know that it was one of the more powerful weapons, and depending on the genre it also has to have the ability to humiliate the opponent in some manner. One weapon that has been portrayed as both awesome, overpowered, and humorously was the gun. Since video games were set in a fictional setting, guns did not have to look or function like a gun in the real world. They could look surreal, they could use ammo that normal guns did not have access to, and they could have special abilities that were impossible to re-enact in real life. Ratchet and Clank, as a franchise, gained its popularity from having a game that was easy to play once one could master the mechanics of the game and from having a large assortment of guns that were both interesting looking and possessed information that gave players incentive to try all of the weapons at some point. Team Fortress 2, in its supplementary material, gave all of its characters unique personalities and eccentricities and the alternate weapons in the main game even reference these eccentricities in their design. Doom, as one of the first shooting games to create an overpowered gun, made all of its weapons heavily destructive by making them produce copious amounts of visceral damage to enemies, so when the player acquired this particular gun, the damage it created surpassed all of the other weapons.

Ratchet and Clank

Ratchet and Clank was a popular game because despite the copious amounts of weapons and violence in its game, the franchise included characters that made the game continuously entertaining to play and special-effects that made the player want to try everything that all of the games had to offer. Set on various fictional planets, the player controlled Ratchet, a Lombax, or Clank, his robot buddy. During the course of most of the games Ratchet could optionally find scattered blueprints to create the most powerful gun in this game. Referred to as the Rip You a New One, it was abbreviated R.Y.N.O., or RYNO. Basically it was a weapon that fired auto-targeting rockets at Ratchet's enemies. Considered one of the deadliest weapons in the Ratchet and Clank universe, the RYNO just got more powerful during the sequels.


In Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time Ratchet had the opportunity to assemble a weapon called the RYNO V. The fifth version of the Rip You a New One series, this weapon was voted "Most Likely to End Life as We Know It" by the people in the Ratchet and Clank series. Even its introductory video emphasized just how destructive this weapon could be. All the player had to do was press the button that pulled the RYNO's trigger, and enemies were quickly destroyed by bullets and rockets. What made this gun both awesome and memorable was that when the gun was firing, a portion of the 1812 Overture, a piece of classical music known for firing actual cannons as part of its music, played at the same time. This aspect of the RYNO V was also present in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale as a Super Move.

Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 was different compared to other online shooting games in that each of the character classes had their own distinct personalities that made them all unique to one another. In the case of the Spy, he had the personality of someone who thought he was better than everyone else and that he was surrounded by idiots. In the supplementary videos that had players see what the individual classes were like as people, that sentiment seemed very accurate. In the Meet the Spy the Spy from the opposing team provided the description of his class. The Spy is quick, the Spy is lethal, the Spy can change into different classes to infiltrate enemy lines, and the Spy slept with an enemy's mother. And then the Soldier, being a trigger-happy moron, killed his side's Spy thinking he was the enemy Spy. He was not the enemy Spy, of course. It was the guy behind the soldier.


One of the Spy alternate firearms was the Ambassador. A huge gun, it was a giant revolver that allowed players to constantly give critical hits when performing a headshot. To match Spy's disposition the Ambassador was described as both artistic and classy. With its rosewood grip and the detailed engraving of an enemy's mother, the Ambassador was made to defeat and humiliate an enemy on the battlefield. Speaking of the engraving of an enemy's mother, as a reference to the Meet the Spy video, this reference to alternate Team Fortress 2 continuity and media was hilarious for any viewer of the Meet the Spy video. The Ambassador could defeat enemies quite easily over extended distances, and insult them by showing a risque picture of their mother at the same time.


The original 1993 science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter, Doom was the first-person shooting game that popularized the genre. In Doom players assumed the identity of "Doomguy", a space marine. While on Mars, a portal to Hell opened, causing demonic forces to come pouring out into the unsuspecting Marine base "Doomguy" was stationed. Now fighting alone against demons, zombiefied personnel corpses, and all sorts of horrifying creatures from Hell. This being a scary shooting game, Doom had an assortment of weapons to choose from. A wide variety of guns to reduce enemies into bloody masses at long distances, a chainsaw to mutilate adversaries at short-distance, and "Doomguy's" own two hands to punch things to death. But all of those weapons were pathetic compared to the BFG 9000. a horrendously powerful gun for its time, all that the player had to do was fire one shot, and all of the enemies in a room were instantly destroyed.


Even the comic based on the game emphasized just how glorious possessing the BFG 9000 could be. Despite all the death, despite all of the carnage "Doomguy" caused with all of the guns that he used to get to this moment, and despite having to fight horrid supernatural threats, "Doomguy" could not just handle the BFG 9000 without praising its glory. "Death surrounds me. Yet, in my head I hear something that sounds like angels! Lo, I have found the Holy Grail of firepower! Mine eyes can but weep as they bear witness to the Majesty. The BFG 9000!", and with these words, "Doomguy" proceeded to kill him enemies until the end of the comic strip. The BFG 9000 was one of the most powerful guns in gaming history, and it deserved all of the praise and respect that it received over the years.


Guns in gaming were interesting things. Due to the fictional content of most video games, how guns worked and what they did when firing could manifest as some fascinating weaponry. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time created the RYNO V, a gun that played orchestral music while firing destructive rockets. Team Fortress 2 had the Ambassador, a giant gun for the Spy class that referenced the Meet the Spy video by engraving the Scout class's mother on its barrel. Doom, the progenitor of all shooting games had the BFG 9000, one of the first overly destructive guns in gaming history.
