9 Most Badass Good Guys in Video Games

Updated on December 16, 2017

Poppy is a proofreader and Dragon Age fan. She lives in Tokyo with her husband and likes to spend time reading and playing video games.

Playable characters in video games range from animals to children to women wearing almost nothing - and sometimes, you'll get a male protagonist who's unforgettably bad-ass. Here's a list of the toughest playable characters from video games.

9. Ethan Thomas (Condemned 2: Bloodshot)

Ethan Thomas was a police officer in the first Condemned game, but after being framed for murder and pursued by a dangerous serial killer, falls into homelessness and alcoholism. Maybe it's because of the bad luck, losing his job and slow descent into madness, but in Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Ethan takes no trouble from anyone without replying with his fists.

Not to mention the different kinds of weapons you can use to mess up demons, drug addicts and criminals (the crowbar and fire axe are my personal favourites), and the completely cold and careless way he does it. Oh, and he can blow enemies' heads off by screaming at them (he Dragonshouted before it was cool).

8. Sten (Dragon Age: Origins)

Sten is a Qunari, a powerful warrior race, who is an optional addition to your party, aquirable in Lothering. Sten was locked up in a cage in Lothering for killing a farmer and his family with his bare hands - and showing little emotion throughout the game. With his high power stats, equipping him with heavy armour and a greatsword proves essential to battle.

In Dragon Age: Origins, you can chat with and get close to characters. Sten doesn't talk much, and only answers your questions with short answers. However, when he feels closer to you, Sten will reveal his side-quest and more of his past. Sten is the definite 'strong, silent type' who is difficult to not respect.

7. Master Chief (Halo Series)

Master Chief is a "towering and faceless cybernetically-enhanced super-soldier" who is a playable character in most of the Halo games.

He is a character of few words, raised from birth in the arts of combat and warfare. With his superior power armour, deadly skills and the fact you never actually see his real face, Master Chief is undeniably mysterious - and bad-ass.

6. Geralt of Rivia (Witcher III: Wild Hunt)

Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher: a monster slayer, with mutated powers. He carries two swords; steel for humans, silver for monsters, and has unparalleled swordsman skills.

He continued to impress in Witcher III: Wild Hunt, arguably one of the best fantasy roleplaying games of the century.

5. Kazuma Kiryu (Yakuza)

The Yakuza game series continues to impress with its latest release,Yakuza 6: the Song of Life, in March 2018 and Yakuza Kiwami 2 in December 2017 in Japan.

Kazuma Kiryu is the main playable character for this series, and he is tough, fearless, and just. He has no problem beating up groups of nasty villains and protecting the innocent. A true yakuza member and loveable and handsome to boot.

4. Solid Snake (Metal Gear Series)

The Metal Gear series has been incredibly popular since the first game's release in 1987 for MSX2 computer standard. The protagonist is Solid Snake, a spy, special ops agent and mercenary, who can make himself virtually invisible and perform deadly kills. Solid Snake has been named as one of the best characters in video games on many lists and remains a popular protagonist in games today.

He also appeared in Super Smash Brothers Brawl as a playable character.

3. Ezio Auditore Da Firenze (Assassin's Creed)

Ezio is lethal - not only is he a master in the art of invisibilty, but he's also a deadly assassin. He travels to various cities in Italy in a quest for vengeance, leaving a trail of bodies behind him. Ezio is undeniably tough - someone you just wouldn't mess around with.

2. War (Darksiders)

War is one of four Horsemen brothers who is framed when he is accused by Council for bringing about Armageddon by siding with Hell in the raging battle between Heaven and Hell, which was previously equal.

War rides a horse, has some of the coolest armour and swords in a game, and is sent to slay Straga, the demon of Hell, and later on the Destroyer. Bringing order between Heaven and Hell, riding a demonic horse and slaying beasts of immutable power - if that's not tough, I don't know what is.

1. Kratos (God of War Series)

Kratos is the main protagonist of the God of War series. He was the leader of a mighty Spartan army before being massacred, and later sets out to slay Gods of Olympus, firstly Ares, and later Hades, Poseidon and Zeus.

A man who battles Gods, aquires Pandora's box and even escapes Hell itself - Kratos, in my opinion, tops the list of toughest playable characters in video games.

Amazing characters are continually being introduced to us through gaming, as character development is just as important in games as it is in books and movies. We continue to look forward to new tough, likeable, and badass characters of both genders in future games!

Don't think anyone can or ever will top Kratos in the badass department. When you man handle Zeus himself...things get realz.

On a side note, I feel somewhat out of place being a guy in the comments of this hub...

I wish I could manage to play a single Metal Gear Solid game without ogling Snake's butt the entire time, myself. It's hard.
