Best Toys for 16 Month Old

Updated on November 27, 2014

What are the best toys for a 16 month old?

There is a huge range of choice of toys for 16 month olds and this article gives several suggestions and ideas. They are all based on toys that my son played with at this age and beyond.

I have included some specific suggestions of toys for 16 month old boys and girls but of course there is a little bit of stereotyping involved in this. Its very likely the boys will like the teaset I've suggested for girls and girls will like the cars I've suggested for boys as well.

Read on for suggestions of the best toys for 16 month old babies.

Toys for 16 month old boys

Trucks, garages and vehicles all make great toys for 16 month old boys. They will be playing with them immediately and for the months and years to come.

From around 1 year old my little boy has loved cars.

There are some great chunky cars that are perfect for little toddler hands to hold and move. And the Vtech pull and learn car carrier featured below has the right sized cars for this age. As well as the smaller cars, the car carrier itself has wheels that little boys and girls will love to push around.

It also comes with buttons to push on the side of the vehicle which make a sound and resemble a phone. Toddlers love these. There are also three animal characters which sit in the driver's seat.

Tonka Truck

This Tonka truck is a great investment. It will be used to pushed things around inside or outside. Toddlers can fit inside it and can be pushed around too. Great for sandpits or playing outside. An investment as this toy is sturdy, will last and boys will be playing with it for years to come.

Toys for 16 month old girls

Here are some great suggestions of first girly gifts for 16 month old girls.

Kidoozie My First Purse, Fun and Educational, For Toddlers and Preschoolers, Encourages Safe Play

This is the perfect little purse for 16 month olds to delve into. It has a credit card, debit card, lipstick, keys, mirror and cell phone. Better for 16 month olds to investigate this purse then their moms.

Kids this age love to put stuff in bags and pull it out again. Better to have their own bag than to be pulling stuff out of an adults!

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Say Please Tea Set

This is the perfect first tea set for 16 month olds. It makes pouring sounds and music and teaches numbers, shapes, opposites, manners, greetings.

Although I've listed this gift under the section for girls, my son had this tea set and loved it. He loved hearing the sounds as you tip the tea pot. It also comes with a cake tray. There are 3 cakes which are different shapes and fit in the different holed shapes in the tray.

More Toy Ideas for 16 month olds

Here are some more toy ideas that 16 month boys and girls are guaranteed to love and have educational value too.

Fisher-Price Brilliant Basics Corn Popper

Most toddlers of this age have just learned how to walk and love to push things around whether that be a push chair, toy shopping trolley or something else. The Fisher Price corn popper is the perfect push along toy.

The colorful popping balls really entertain them and make them want to push along the toy.

It's a classic toy that many parents will remember from when they were children.

Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Toys

Fisher Price make a great range of toys aimed at this age group called Laugh and Learn. The tea set featured above is from the Laugh and Learn range.

My son was given the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Kitchen and it's been one of his most played with toys. He loved to open and close the fridge door, open and close the over, turn on and off the light and listen to all the songs and music which are really catchy. It also comes with a shapesorter fridge and he loved to put things in and out of the fridge too. There is a saucepan and stove to use which is great for first time imaginary play. I can't really put my finger on why he liked it so much, he just did. There are lots of excellent reviews over on amazon which show how popular this toy is.

Update : My son is almost 2 1/2 now and he still picks up and plays with this toy on occasion.
