[Video Guide] Diablo III - Secret Level Whimsyshire
What is Whimsyshire?
Whimsyshire is the secret level in Diablo III, similar to the cow level in Diablo II, where players need to seek out particular items in order to unlock a hidden map in the game. In this colorful secret level, players can fight ponies, teddy bears, and flowers. There are rainbows and gift boxes all around the map.
I personally find it slightly disturbing to see bloody slaughtered ponies laying dead all over the ground, but I suppose I shall get used to it once I slaughter enough ponies in Whimsyshire.
In the screenshot below, you can take a glimpse of the colorful hidden level, as well as the aggressive, but cute, ponies that will come charging at you.
How to Unlock Whimsyshire
Below I'll outline the items required to unlock Whimsyshire:
- Black Mushroom
- Leoric's Shinbone
- Liquid Rainbow
- Wirt's Bell
- Gibbering Gemstone
- Plans for Staff of Herding
***** You must also have 150,000 Gold *****
The Black Mushroom can be found in the Cathedral Level 1 in Act 1. You may need to run through the entire floor several times in order to locate the Black Mushroom, as it can spawn anywhere on that floor or nowhere at all.
You can load any quest with access to the Cathedral, and simply use the waypoint to warp to the Cathedral Gardens. It took me quite a lot of tries to find the Mushrooms to be honest. I probably had to run through the floor 10 times total for this item.
Leoric's Shinbone can be found randomly in Leoric's Manor in Act 2. What you want to look for, are the Burnt Logs, which appear randomly in the fireplace of the Manor. Upon clicking on the logs, you will see Leoric's Shinbone pop out.
This item doesn't require much searching, since it can be found at a predetermined location, but it still requires a few tries. It took me 5 or 6 tries to get it.
This item is a bit tricky to find. You first need to locate Zaven the Alchemist at 2 possible locations in the Dalhgur Oasis, as outlined in the video. Note that it's possible that Zaven may not even appear at either of the two locations. You'll need to keep searching the 2 locations until you see him.
Upon finding him, he will let you into the Mysterious Cave. In the cave, you'll need to search the first level of the Mysterious Cave thorougly for the Mysterious Chest. The Mysterious Chest spawns randomly as well, so you may or may not even find it. If you do not see the chest, you will need to repeat the whole process of finding Zaven all over again.
This item may require quite a few tries to obtain.
Wirt's Bell might be the easiest item to obtain (depending on how you define easy). There is no randomness in finding the bell. You simply need to have 100,000 Gold with you to purchase the bell. To some people, obtaining 100,000 Gold might not very easy though.
You can find it in the Caldeum Bazaar in Act 2 at the merchant shown in the picture to the right.
Simple enough right?
This is another tricky item to get. You need to travel to the Fields of Slaughter in Act 3, and search for the Cavern of Frost. However, the Cavern of Frost may not always appear, because half the time, the Icefall Caves might take it's place. If that ever happens, you'll need to quit and restart your search for the Cavern of Frost.
Once you find the Cavern of Frost, you'll need to search for the monster Chiltara on the second floor. This monster may or may not spawn, so this quest may take you quite a few tries. The Chiltara will always drop the Gibbering Gemstone, so at least you can rest assured that you will get the gemstone once you find the monster.
Plan for Staff of Herding
This item is fairly straightforward. You simply have to defeat Izual in Act 4 until he drops the Plan.
This item may still take you a while to get, because you will need to battle your way through enemies before being able to fight Izual.
The hardest part for me, was battling through the hoarde of enemies every time I needed to restart the mission, as they are fairly strong and often mobbed me. On the bright side however, I didn't need to scan the map with myeyes for any specific items. I just need to worry about fighting my way over to reach Izual.
It's Crafting Time!
Now you simply want to take all your items, and go to the blacksmith. Then you want to right-click on the Plan: Staff of Herding to teach the blacksmith how to make this staff. Make sure you have 50,000 Gold with you, and all items obtained above in your inventory, and you can go ahead and craft the Staff of Herding!
Awesome, we're almost done! Lets head over to the Whimsyshire entrance now.
Entrance to Whimsyshire
To reach the entrance to Whimsyshire, you simply need to go to Act I, and waypoint to the Old Ruins. Be sure you have the Staff of Herding in your inventory, and then you'll want to head left to Old Tristriam Road, and simply follow the path.
You'll eventually run into the ghost of a... cow. Wait, what, a cow?? Well whatever, lets just talk to the cow and have fun slaughtering ponies in Whimsyshire!!!!
