Viewmaster Viewfinder

Updated on October 11, 2011

Most likely you had one as a kid.  They were a cool gift to get as we marveled at the 3 -d effect.  we looked at each reel several times, as the bright colors caught our attention.  Click Click click.. one frame after another.  This toy is most likely going to be "extinct" due to all the technological advances. Kids now have 3 movies, cell phones with TV and the Internet.  But you have to admit these toys were cool and in the time of " Atari" they were cutting edge.

Fun Fact

Did You know The Viewmaster was utilized by the US Military for Artillery spotting and Aircraft Identification?  It wasn't until 1966 until the toy started featuring more kid like themes.

The view master was invented in the 1930 by William Gruber and Harold graves. Both had developed " stereo Photographs"  They bought out their competition " True View" and had obtained the right to feature Disney Characters on thier reels.  This company changed hand several times.  In 1981 it was sold for 20 milion dollars and called the Veiwmaster  International group. Later ut was purchased by Tyco and then purchased by Mattel.  It is currently being produced under the Fisher Price name  ( a division of Mattel)

Over the years there have been 25 different View master models and over 1.5 billion disks produced. Despite the number of different models any disk is said to work in any model. This toy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. There are many many types of disks for the Viewmaster today.  My favorite are the the ones offered by the Discovery channel. You can find View Master reels for almost any cartoon out there.

The View master had another practical use. A 25 volume set of disks were developed by a physician on the human anatomy.

This newer model View master is  " Model O' and is very inexpensive.    It works on the same concept as the older version.  You can choose between a red one and a blue one. A sample reel comes with the viewer.   Parent reviews were overall favorable.  There is mention you need to take the screw out of the reel so you can interchange the.  However, one parent left it in to keep form loosing the reel.  There is also a mention of the View master not turning all the time.  I had bought on for my son and experienced this.  However it was caused by not flipping the lever all of the way back!  My son certainly enjoys this toy.

How totally cool is this hub?!!!! I love it. I had a view master and so did all of my kids. Sad to think that one day they may not be around. I'd better get a few now and keep them just in case. I could leave them in my will to my great grandkids. Wouldn't that be cool? Of course, they may not care. I'd better leave a printout of this hub with them. Great post Ms Chievous. I'm sharing. Thumbs up too.
