What is Geocaching All About?

Updated on October 8, 2012

About Geocaching

You may have heard of the term geocaching but don't really know what geocaching is all about. What is geocaching? Where do you start? What do you need? What's the goal of of this popular high-tech outdoor game?

Geocaching is simply a treasure hunting game, but instead of using only your eyes, hands, or brain, you will also need the aid of a GPS unit or GPS-enabled smart phone and access to a geocaching site like geocaching.com.

Take a look at the site and to learn what geocaching is about and where the geocachers are located in your area. Once you have located a few caches near you, it's time to head outdoors and go find them. Give it a try. If you like a little treasure hunting, spending time outside, and using your brain, you will like geocaching.

What Are You Looking For?

Instead of looking for treasure like gold or silver, you are hunting for geocaches. A geocache is simply a container, hidden from view that you use a GPS unit to locate. You can also use a GPS-enabled smartphone if you grab a geocaching app to go with it, but a GPS unit is a more durable option for some of the places you will end up looking for caches. A durable unit makes a lot of sense when you are climbing a tree or out in the weather.

You will find that there are geocaches in places you never would have guessed, from right under the park bench you sit on at lunch to a tree at your local park. You never know. Taking a road trip is more fun when you stop along the way to find a cache now and then, and if the kids are getting restless a quick score of trade items at a cache might do just the trick.

Who Geocaches?

People of all ages love geocaching too. Whether you are geocaching with kids, friends, or even if you are a senior, you will find that this great outdoor hobby has a lot to offer and that it is a great way to get outdoors for a walk, hike, or just to make your brain work a little bit harder.

One of the greatest things about geocaching is that anyone can do it. Even those with limited mobility or in a wheelchair will find caches that fit their ability. Kids love trading toys and seniors appreciate the walk outdoors with a little hunt at the same time.

Why Do It?

So what is geocaching all about? It's about getting outdoors, using your brain, spending time with friends and family, and discovering places you've never been to before. Give it a try. You just might discover your next great hobby.

I agree Mama and you bring up a great point. Once you have a GPS or smartphone, geocaching is a free hobby. I love that!

Never heard of it so obviously never tried it but it does sound interesting. Your hub provides good information on geocaching. Voted up.

I love geocaching. It's such a great excuse to get out and do something active with the kids (and adults too) and what's better than a free activity on a nice day!
