Who is Geek Girl?
Hey there, all, if you're reading this, I truly appreciate you. I started up this Hub page as a place where I can talk to you all about things that I geek out about, and so hopefully we can enjoy them together. On this page, we'll talk about and review video games, TV shows, movies. We'll spend time discussing Cosplay and conventions, and sometimes YouTube videos. Above all I just want to write and entertain you all.
Here are a few things about Geek Girl: My name is Ashley, if you didn't already know, and I'm 23 years old. Throughout my entire life, I've considered myself a nerdy outsider. I enjoyed all the strange things, and most of my school life was spent with my nose in books, even if they weren't the ones I was supposed to be studying. Despite my lack of motivation in school, I still managed to make good grades and kept myself out of most trouble. Writing has always been one of my biggest passions, alongside art of all nature's, and was definitely my favorite thing to do. I was always writing verse and poetry in the margins of my homework, much to most teachers chagrin. My fantasies always involved me finishing and publishing a book, or penning some great stage play. I still hope that happens one day...
Moving on, though, I've always had a great love for pop culture, especially when it comes to the classic nerdy things. I grew up watching Star Wars over and over, to the point that I was pretty sure I was supposed to be a Twi'lek. Not a slave girl though, I was going to be a bounty hunter named Dia 'Aris. But that's a story for another time. I also was in love with Spock from Star Trek, among many other fictional characters, and enjoyed watching the old re-runs on TV Land with my dad. I've ALWAYS played video games; seriously, I can not ever remember not playing video games. They are one of my favorite things in the world, though I don't let my love for them define me; I just enjoy a good game with a good story.
True facts right now: I loved zombies and vampires before it was cool. Horror hipster. Lost Boys, Dawn of the Dead, Fright Night, the list of movies is too long. I can remember being 7 years old and watching all of the cheesy horror movies with my mom and being absolutely terrified by the original Evil Dead. I still have an obsession with horror movies, and vampires & zombie ones in particular, and will rent any good looking ones that come out so that I can curl up on the couch and watch them with my mom.
I first discovered anime in the early 1990's. That's whenever the first Pokémon came out in the US, and I instantly fell in love with the show and the art style. I didn't know it had it's own name, or that it came from Japan, but I loved it. I started watching Tenchi Muyo and Sailor Moon on Toonami soon after, and it's easy to say that it became a lifelong obsession. I was searching everywhere for a fix after Toonami stopped airing some of my favorite shows, and learned that they actually had books in the same art style. They were combining two of my favorite loves and I couldn't stand it!! Reading + Art + Anime style= One happy Geek Girl. I started drawing pictures out of the book and really getting decent at drawing. I was impressed with myself, and still love drawing because of it. Now, thanks to the internet, I know so much about anime and manga, and I've watched so many shows that if young me would have known all of this, I probably would've had some sort of reading/ watching aneurysm.
Some more personal things are that I have two dogs that live with my parents, and two cats that live with me and my boyfriend, Shawn. We are getting married in July (Shawn and I, not myself and one of the animals, ... or all of us, that'd be strange) and it will be on the day of our 4 year anniversary. Shawn is my best friend and my Geek Guy, computer fixer extraordinaire, and all around cool and sweet person. We share a love of all things nerdy, and our reception is going to be based around nerd culture, specifically 'The Best Fictional Couples'. Think Han Solo & Princess Leia, Aragorn & Arwen, Mario & Peach, Link & Zelda, Ron & Hermione, Simba & Nala, etc.
I have a little brother (if you want to call him that, the frost giant) and a little sister, who are my best friends. I love them more than anything, and wouldn't ever be inspired to do anything if it wasn't for them. My brother is always finding the best cheesy zombie stuff, not to mention making me get to playing games to try and keep up with him. And as far as my sister goes, she's one of the smartest people I know, and she is always making me learn knew things and read new books. We all three share a love of the strange and bizarre to different degrees, and we are always making each other laugh. Though I have my own issues with being antisocial and anxious, if I had to choose to spend the day home alone or doing something with them, I'd choose them a million times over every time. As siblings, we've had our issues, but I hope they know that without them I'd probably be a balding, pale hermit; and that's just unattractive.
I could probably go on and on for days about all the things I like, but that's kind of the point of this blog. To review 'Nerd Culture' related things, get some nostalgia going, talk about and review new or old video games, craft projects for the nerdy crafter; just so many fun and different projects and topics. I'd love to hear from you guys, if there is anyone, about what you want to hear about. 'Til I start getting some feedback, I'll just start posting away about things that I like. I hope that someone, somewhere gets some kind of enjoyment from this, or is even reading what I'm saying. If you are, thank you, and stay tuned for more from me, your local Geek Girl.
