Why Are The Sims So Addictive?

Updated on June 12, 2009

Are You Addicted to The Sims?

The Sims have been around for a few years now and it is still the top selling PC game all over the world. Why is it so popular? What is it about the sims that is so intriguing that it keeps millions of people in front of their computer screens for hours and hours at a time? Are you addicted to the Sims? How do you know if you are one of the millions that are?

You know you might be addicted if.......

  • you find yourself thinking about the sims even when you are not playing the game.
  • you have a dream and everyone in the dream is a sim.
  • you are driving around and you see a house that you want to build in your Sims game
  • you look at people around you where ever you are and wonder if you can make a sim out of them
  • you are supposed to be in bed by 12:00 am and you find yourself still up at 3:00 in the morning
  • you build your own house and everyone in your family is a Sim
  • you are really tired and you imagine a red bar over your head
  • you find you know all the lyrics to the songs that play in your game
  • you find yourself talking simlish

What the critics are saying about the sims addiction

Some say that it is the experience of playing God that is a major selling point of the game. If you are one of the many people who play the sims you would have to agree that you may be the one to make and influence the lives of your sims, but you are really the one who is controlled. It's so easy to play the sims and forget the time. On more than one occasion I would find myself so in grossed with the Sims that I was up until 3:00 in the morning. There definitely is something to be said about living someone else's life and being the one that is in control of everything that happens. There is more to the Sims life though. Along with being able to play with their lives, you can also become an architect and an interior designer. You can become whatever your heart desires. You can be as rich as you want and if you want to own your own clothes store or restaurant? The Sims have it. It's like being able to live out your fantasies even though in real life it would never happen.

Is it wrong to be an addict?

I once heard someone call the Sims  "A Doll House Soap Opera"  if you have ever watched a  soap on TV then you know the addiction they can have in someones life.  I watch soaps on TV and play the Sims.  Is it really so bad?  what is wrong with taking some time during the day and doing something that requires no thinking at all.  I love the Sims and I say have fun but don't forget you have a real life too.

What do you think?

I would love to hear from you,  whether you are an addict or not. What do you think the attraction is?  what kind of expansions are you looking forward too and Do you think there will be a Sims 4?

I'm 24 and the Sims game that got me hook was Sims urbz I play it when I was young. Then busting out. Learn all the cheats by brain which made it even worse. I could control and make people happy something you can't do in real life because people stick to their standard even if they are stupid. You can be anyone you want to be. I lost myself in the world were you even be a multi milluonare and do things you can't do in real life like donate to charity adopt or have a good looking husband or wife. You can be a child all over again, go to high school and be something. Getting a job in real life it's not as easy. Its more and more difficult with the degrees everyone wants. It takes forever but in the Sims makes a career so much easier. You can even stay young forever. Its like loving a life we wish we had but it's difficult to get. I must leave this game for now even if it makes me real happy. I got a little shirt business to start and a future. I love Sims so much its hard to let go so I completely understand the addiction but when its time to let go its time.

I played Sims 1, 2 and 3 got bored with keeping up with their needs meter, keeping them happy try to have them climb the career ladder, then I created ways for a sim to die... I know evil, but I was bored. Now since I haven't played sims 3 in 7 years. I guess I got the Sims out of my system for good. Playing this game trying to keep needs, skills & social up, and also try to advance in career, it was a nightmare at times.

I just got rid of the game and moved on to Xbox 360: Assassin's Creed (1, 2, 3, 4), Silent Hill (Homecoming & Downpour), Dead Island & Riptide, Telltale: The Walking Dead, and the TV series The Walking Dead, Halo, and several others.

I tried it when it was on sale for $5.00. Honestly, I did not understand the appeal. You constantly have to see your sims needs and too much time passes to do anything. For the price I thought it was worth the try but I regret the purchase now.

I love playing The Sims, but I hate the way it's affecting me. That's why I googled about how to stop The Sims from distracting me, because I have other more important things to attend to, and I ended up reading this article. I have school to keep me busy, and I wan to maintain being an honor student.

I think what makes the game addicting for me is that there is a lot you can do with it. You can make stories, you can make movies, you can be creative. I think I got addicted to the game because I'm so curious. I want to do everything I can with the game. There are options for almost everything, and you can even customize the game to suit you more! Right now I'm dabbling with custom content and tweaking the game a bit, but I'm just a beginner and it's hard. I find myself always thinking about what else I haven't tried out in the game.

OK, so reading all these sad comments from people here inspired me to write our story, you can check it out on my profile. I think there should be more discussion about Sims addiction. All I've heard about is World of Warcraft, but never heard about people actually losing lives for this game too.

Let me tell you a story.

I met the love of my life, let's call her Christina, a year ago. We literally fell in love the moment we saw each other. She is the prettiest girl I ever saw, we had the same interests and I just knew I wanted to marry her. We dated for a while, then decided to move in together. We'd both just graduated and the future was open and beautifully free.

We made plans for the future, we talked a lot about making a big trip to South America, etc. We were happy.

At one point, I had to go to the east coast for a family funeral. I went on my own, spent a week and when I came back, found my girlfriend on the computer playing the Sims 3.

I thought it was funny, I never thought she was the gaming type. I tried it too but got bored pretty fast. However, she loved it and just played for hours and hours and couldn't stop.

I was used to going to bed with her, spending a lot of time with her, but she just stayed in front of the computer. After a week I kind of had to bring it up and asked if she is upset with me because she doesn't want to spend time with me. She said it's not personal.

A few months went by and she just turned into this "static" personality. She had no more interests to do anything, but play this game. I think it took a toll on her health too somehow.

Long story short... we're not together anymore. Her personality changed completely after she got into this game.

I play it like once o twice a week but.five to six hours straight. When Ilook at a fancy house I say that's.sims's style house. I rather being addicted to sims than to drugs or sims 4 parents should be able to spank mischiveous kids mmm or wives. Disable squares when naked. Watch inside schools hospital and other buildings. Watch kids inside trre houses. It should be more realistic. Real life stuff.

Now that you can download Sims Freeplay on the iPhone, I'm more addicted than I used to be. But I don't play for hours. Only if I have to send them to work, plant food etc.

i'm still a teenager that lives at home and is getting ready to study for exams so the sims 3 was just a chance to live like an adult with more responsibilities and as soon as i started, i couldn't stop, i just fell in love with the fact that you could design basicly anything and i could shape someone elses life, even if it wasn't real. I just couldn't stop its definatly an addiction and it feels so good that other people are going through the same thing :) x

I remember when I first played the first game. It was fine but not addictive. The second one was my downfall! It started as harmless fun with friends. Then after I started a relationship and soon after lost my job. So I found myself on the game for as many hours as possible. Until the day came when my,boyfriend pointed out that I wasn't pulling my weight around the house, after all he was now the only person bringing in money. He was right. I hadn't done any washing, ironing, cleaning or cooking because I had quite litrually sat and played the sims 2 all day. The stupid thing was that it would have only taken a few hours to completechores anyway.

Anyway, he uninstalled the game (he claimed by accident but I know it was probably a lie) and I was so upset. I found myself at 18 years if age getting really sulky and depressed. I eventually got a new job and I soon forgot and felt a little daft for ever getting into such a rut. I hadn't played it for 4 years.

Then about 3 days ago I dipped my toe into the world of sims 3. My husband told me off once already for spending too much time on it (I conyinously askef if I should switch it off and he said I was fine to contine. So I could do with a bit of support from him. Like "turn the game off now" for one simple example. Because like everyone had stated you simply loose any track of time.) Now I don't think I'm addicted anymore, only time will tell ha.

I've read some pretty sad stories on here and I know its hard but its learning when its ok to play and when you should be in the pub with friends. Real life clock somewhere in the game maybe?

Anyway I know this wont get read. But I feel better that I've wrote about it. Glad I'm not alone.

I know its only a game. But its endless and so very addictive!

(apologies for bad grammer etc. My phone thinks it knows best.)

i love the sims 3 and yes you may say that people r addicted cus they whant to build a real house on sims but i just whant to become an architect when i am older so i think buying ambishons becoming an architect ( in sims ) and  disining houses in my head is understandable right???the thing that realy bugs me is that making houses takes such a long time, it takes me half and hour to build a tiny bigginer house when i do acily play the game for fun anouther thing that is anoying is that they don't

show you where all the pluming will go or the electrisity but i just find the time goes so quickly while playing

plz tell me if that sounds like i am addicted

A lot of these people really aren't that addicted... I'm 14, and been playing for 4 years. I got it the start of a 6-week holiday from school and played for like 4 hours a day, then it got to playing for DAYS without sleeping/breaks etc. At school I'd take my DS and play it there or on my phone.

Now my gaming laptop is broke and I haven't played TS2 in MONTHS (since January) but I'm still addicted. I started crying the other day because I wanted to play it so much.

Whenever mods conflicted I'd uninstall the game and re-install, simply because I had over 25,000 mods (I'm not even exaggerating here), after it was re-installed, I spent about 8 hours getting those mods back. Every day before playing I'd download a few more mods, usually downloading about 25 before playing and then 40 after playing.

I'm even getting a new laptop JUST to play TS2 before we break up for our 6-week holiday. I presume I'll just go back to playing for 4 days, sleeping for 7 hours, playing for 4 days, repeat.

So yeah, none of you are really addicted if you compare to me :/

This is my confession. I am a 29 years old single female. I graduated over ten years ago and since then I've been simming hardcore. It all started from Sims 1 that I fell in love with immediately it came out.

Everyone else was moving on and I was left behind, in my tiny room, sitting in front of the computer all day long playing The Sims. Soon it became all night long as well, since I wasn't interested in sleeping. I was very tired but didn't care, I felt getting my Sims to the next step was more important. For years I remember sleeping maybe three hours a night. I loved the Sims 1 with all the expasions so much. Especially Makin' Magic was... magical to me. As soon as I got up, I went back to the computer. My health detoriated pretty soon, my legs were always swollen, from all the sitting I guess. I started gaining a lot of weight too but didn't care about that either. I never really left the house except to get food and sometimes I had to go see a doctor. I have numerous health issues.

My friendships waned pretty soon after I became a simmer. Same thing that happens in Sims, friendships really do wilt away like flowers if you don't care for them. I didn't stay in touch with anyone and soon no one was even asking how I was doing. Which was fine for me, because I used to hate it when people asked me that, I didn't have anything to say and had to come up with lies about my life. I lost all interest in other people at a pretty early stage... now, ten years forward, countless of new Sims games and packs later, the only person I have a distant connection to is my father who lives on the other side of the country, for he sends me money monthly. If he asks how I am doing, usually before Christmas, I make up stories. I am so nervous when I have to talk with him over the phone. He would be heartbroken if he knew I am wasting my life away because of a game. This game is draining me out of money as well. They come up with new stuff all the time and I've bought everything. I've used so much money on this game I don't even want to think about it.

I have no connections, I am completely alone and everything I know about adult life is from this computer game. I dream about getting married with a good man.

I have never had a real relationship. I don't have friends either, no one. I have no one to talk to. I recently put up a fake profile on Facebook, and saw all my former classmates. They're married. Most of them have kids. Real families, with love and warm smiles. I can't even describe the feeling of seeing what my life could be without this game. I used to have dreams. I always wanted to have a family and find a good husband. I wanted to start a business. Now I am 29 years old, fat, no skills, no interest in anything except this game, lost all my social skills... because of this game! I am so angry at myself, but I am so defendless against it!

I have sometimes tried to start a "new life" without Sims, but I can only be off the game for maybe a day.

So this is what brings me here... to confess this to you fellow addicts (please share if you have similar stories). Today I want to do it. I want to remove Sims 1, Sims 2 completely with all my saved families and downloads. Then I am going to only focus on playing Sims 3. I decided to give myself only one more month with it, saying goodbyes to my families. It hurts to let them go, they feel like real people to me and I care for them deeply. To make the transition easier, I also will try to do two hours a day something else than simming. I just haven't decided what it would be. I would appreciate suggestions, I don't really come up with anything except the hobbies from Sims. Then after one month exactly, I will uninstall and delete Sims 3 with all the expansions and packs completely, remove all my profiles from all the Sims websites, somehow get rid of all the Sims merchandise I have collected during the years in my tiny apartment and quit. Even if the makers come up with new expansion packs I won't play them anymore. This is my plan.

The Sims are awesome! The only reason I'm not playing it right now is because I'm trying to cut down on my playing time... I was playing 14 hours a day for weeks (I'm on holiday ftw!). When I first got it, I played for close to 30 hours straight.

As for how to limit yourself... Decrease your playing time slowly. Have a target time where you have to stop and set several alarms so you're more aware of the time passing. And then spend time on another hobby instead. For a start, you could limit your playing quite a lot, and then have a "Sims Binge Day" every week, where you play as long as you like. That might help you be more motivated to stick to the limit.

Trying to limit my playing time to 6 hours today...

I play the Sims 2, and I'm totally addicted. I don't want to shut it out of my life or anything (it's fun!) but I need to learn to pace myself. I do online highschool classes, so I can't really make my computer off-limits to myself during the day, and at night, especially if I haven't played much during the day (a day when I've actually been productive in my school work,) then I REALLY want to play at night. I struggle with procrastination and focus issues in general, but when I get addicted to doing something particularly distracting-- like the sims-- I have a harder time. The good news is I also have a pattern that happens every time I get obsessed with something new: if I'm feeling totally caught up in the thing, I just go a day without it and try not to think about it. For some reason, if I go to do the thing in question the next day, not only does it not seem as obsessive, it's actually a complete turn off. So, if I just go a day with no simming, I usually end up not wanting to play at all.

I love Sims! I don't play obsessivly, but i always want to. I have to stop myself from playing all the time, and i find i play about two whole hours a day. I can't beleive my little world became a lifestyle. I just can't make myself stop sometimes, and rarely caNn stop until i've fufilled myself or 'my aspiration meter is good'. With this stuff, i just want to work on my pregnant teens while i can be losing the nine pounds that'll make me a normal weight. I've always had a little problem with weight, and playing God to little people isn't helping.

I have found myself going on my computer to do online homework, and after I finish homework I reward myself for finishing my homework and I end up putting the Sims on and playing it for hours after I am done. The problem with this is, I play the Sims before I do any homework, and I don't get a lot of homework done! Now I keep the Sims out of my computer and out of the room all together. My wife hides it so I don't play it all day on the weekend. That way I have to spend time with her and our son lol. Sims 3 can ruin your real life if you don't be careful! She likes the Sims too, so she understands how it can control you like that lol.

I am SUPER addicted. I had the Wii version first and I got addicted to that one. Then I got the pc versions and stopped playing the Wii one after I realized how lame it is compared to the pc ones. Sims is awesome! I literally played that game my whole spring break. Wake up at 8:00 and play till 9:30, same with one weekend! Imm sooooooo addicted that in school I day dream about my sims and in 6th period of school I'm almost dying of excitement cause of how close I am to playing it. Best game evaaaa!! (:

My mom is addicted. Sometimes I feel like she would rather play her sims than live real life. She gets mad at me when I ask her to stop. I want my mother back...

Sims is AMAZING! I find myself pplaying it for 3-4 hours at a time. You don't even notice how fast time's going by.

Whenever i'm driving - or should i say my mum's driving - around the strrets i always think, "im going to build thast house" or "i made something like that the other day" etc.

Hopefully this addiction will fade after a while, as i have been playing it since sims 2, but i love it and it is minimized on my laptop at this very moment.

I hope to make my own game like this in the futre, me and my cuz have started working on it already.

      you make a good point,

I'm so hooked on it right now!!! I've actually learned to control some of my sim time from about 5 hrs a day to about 2. I have a tendency to get bored with the families really fast, so maybe that helps. But it's so much fun you can't help it!! I'm going to go play right now!!!

I can't stop playing the sims3... I have it running almost constantly and even watch movies picture in picture while playing. My life consists of eating, drinking, Mary- Jane, and of course the undeniable addiction that comes with designing after a toke or two!!!... wow there's no better stress reliever in my books!

I gave up playing Sims for good. I had to remove the game from the computer and sell the the cds. I feel so relieved.

At one point I noticed I wasn't even having fun anymore. I was just playing really compulsively, endlessly trying to reach the next goal. I played at least twelve hours a day, some days even more. Yes, really!

I don't have other addictions and I don't play anything else.

Many are talking about their obsession/addiction with Sims in a humorous way. In my opinion there's nothing funny about the addictivity of the game. It's seriously bad for you!

I'm an ex sims 2 addict,I'd be so in grossed with sims some days that I'd play nonstop from about 9 'till 10 or 11 in the afternoon, I also spent about a day gettin loads of custom content, i always had to have the best clothes, best furniture, best makeup, it was chemical. Please do NOT play this game or you could get addicted too.

every time i play the sims for a really long time, the next day is even worse. i can't stop thinking about it!! and its really bad because i can only play the sims on my moms laptop and she doesn't like it when i go on a sims frenzy. so sometimes i steal her computer at night and play..

but eventually i get bored of the sims and don't play it for a really long time. then after like 2 months i get hooked again for like a week and the cycle starts all over again.

its quite strange... i don't know what to do...

      I- yes- am one of those people. But, if it's like, four in the afternoon, and I want to start playing, I usually limit myself from a one hour to two hour playing range. That's it for the day because my eyes feel like they are going to pop out of my head. But, don't get me wrong, I've had days where I've played for nine hours and yes, I thought about the Sims ALL DAY LONG after that. (I was "sick" that day) So, yes, I limit myself, but sometimes it gets out of control. I know it doesn't seem addicting to some people, but it is to A lot. lol :{

Well, I think indeed Sims 3 it's an addicting game. But like Sims there are lots of addicting games, you just have to educate yourself to shutdown when it's time.

      BTW nice hub.
