Wii Fit Overview

Wii Fit Quick Overview

A home work out disguised as a video game?

Wii Fit comes with the Wii Balance Board and requires a Wii console to play. [Wii console sold separately]

∗ Wii Fit combines fitness with fun...

and is designed for everyone young and old. Wii Fit players work towards personal fitness goals and they block soccer balls, swivel hips to power hoop twirls, and go big on ski jumps to get themselves there.

∗ Check your daily progress...

set goals, check your Wii Fit Age, and even enter exercise time you've done outside of Wii Fit

∗ Wii Fit Age...

is measured by factoring the user's BMI reading, testing the user's center of gravity and conducting quick balance tests.

∗ Training is at the core of Wii Fit

You can spend as much (or as little) time as you want trying out all of the 40+ activities Wii Fit offers.

The Wii Fit Balance Board

Don't You Think This resembles a double-wide bathroom scale?

The primary tenet of Wii Fit is center of balance...

the point between your left and right sides when you stand upright, has a lot to do with your health. Those without an even center of balance will be unnaturally compensating for this imbalance, which causes their posture to become misaligned, increasing the possibility of putting unnecessary strain on their bodies. This is where the Wii Balance Board comes in.

Similar in appearance to a step aerobics board, the Wii Balance Board is much, much more.

Easily capable of supporting weights up to a maximum of 300 pounds, it is sturdy and precise, able to measure weight and register pressure accurately when placed on a variety of flat surfaces.

This advanced level of sensitivity allows for both the wide range of activities found in the Wii Fit software as well as the board's amazing ability recognize individual players by their weight alone.

Wii Fit - Getting Started:

Back to Table of Contents

Create a Profile

Before you jump into doing exercises and activities, you'll start by creating a profile.

This is done easily and intuitively by simply choosing a Mii, entering your height and age information, and doing a few quick tests that will serve as a baseline for your new Wii fitness regimen. These tests are:

∗BMI Check:

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is the standard used by agencies such as the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health. To check your BMI, you'll enter your height then stand on the Wii Balance Board and let it read your weight.

∗Wii Fit Age:

After you've checked your BMI, you'll do a basic balance test and find out your current Wii Fit Age. This basic balance test measures how well you can control your left and right balance.

Based on the results, you'll be assigned a Wii Fit Age.

Four Categories of Fun.. Fun.. Fun

Once you have created your profile it's time to have some fun.

Wii Fit features four main categories of exercises to choose from:

(click on these options for quick navigation on this lens)

∗Strength Training

∗Aerobics
∗Yoga
∗Balance Games

Wii Fit will guide you through the first three with the help of your own virtual personal trainer, while the balance games offer variety and fun to help keep you engaged and excited about your fitness goals.

In addition, as you spend time exercising, you'll earn Fit Credits that unlock additional exercises and activities within your favorite categories that will allow you to continue to push yourself.

See more detail on the four categories below:

Wii Fit Strength Training

Back to Table of Contents

Strength Training: Put your strength to the test with muscle-toning exercises like

Single Leg Extension, Sideways Leg Lift, Arm and Leg Lift, Single-Arm Stand, Torso Twists, Rowing Squat, Single Leg Twist, Lunge, Push-Up and Side Plank, Jackknife, Plank and Tricep Extension.

Wii Fit has 15 different Strength Training Exercises that provide interactive instruction and feedback based on your performance.

In fact, the game does such an effective job that it doesn't leave much room for us to elaborate!

But with that said, here are a few pointers to keep in mind as you go about your strength training routine:

Proper Form

Remember, the balance board can't detect much more than your center of balance and timing

.. meaning you need to be particularly cognizant that you're performing the exercises properly.

Also, if your TV is located in a hard-to-see location, try listening to the verbal cues instead so you can focus on your form.

Increased Reps & New Exercises

The more you put into Wii Fit, the more you'll get out.

That not only includes self-health, but also additional strength exercises (among others) as well as the option of increased reps that the game rewards you with spending time with Wii Fit.

For a complete list of what exercises you can unlock, and how much time you'll need to play in order to earn them, please go to the Wii Fit Unlockables Section HERE

Wii Fit Aerobics:

Back to Table of Contents

Aerobics: Wii Fit's Aerobics are the most physically active of the four modes.

Get your heart pumping with fun interactive Aerobic exercises like Hula Hoop, Basic Step, Basic Run, Super Hula Hoop, Advanced Step, 2-P Run, Rhythm Boxing, Free Step and Free Run.

Hula Hoop Objective:

Spin the Hula Hoop as fast as you can, while catching the ones thrown at you.

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start

Rotate your hips to get the Hula Hoop spinning - the faster you spin it, the more points you'll earn. Every so often, one of your fellow Miis will throw another Hula Hoop at you to either side - put your arms above your head and lean as far as you can in either direction to catch it.

Tips* Catching the hula-hoops can be tricky. Remember, it's based on weight, so even if you're leaning to the proper side, your Mii won't respond unless you place enough weight in the proper direction. We've found the best way to ensure you catch the hoops is to extend your arms straight above your head, then lean your entire body in the proper direction.

Super Hula Hoop

Super Hula Hoop Objective:

Spin the Hula Hoop as fast as you can, while catching the ones thrown at you.

How to Unlock:

This is just like the standard Hula-Hooping, except even more difficult.

Rhythm Boxing

Rhythm Boxing Objective:

Step off the board and punch the bag in time to the rhythm.

How to Unlock: Accumulate 1:40 Wii Fit Credits

In this exercise, you'll have to use both the Wii Balance Board, as well as the Wii Remote and Nun-chuck to punch the bag. But in order to punch the bag, you'll have first step forward off the board (toward the punching bag), then throw a punch with either your left or right hand. The better your timing, the better your score.

Tips * The best time to throw your punch is right after the target appears on the punching bag - if you don't see the target, then you're punching too soon!

∗ Yeah, I know - some of the moves can get long and confusing. To help ease your way into the exercise, pay attention only to your trainer's first move set. Since he always reverses the direction in the second set, as long as you remember the first, you should be able to adjust your exercise on the fly.

∗ At the end of the exercise - your trainer will invite you to knock out the punching bag by throwing as many swings as you can for ten seconds. Stepping on and off the balance board doesn't matter here, so just focus on swinging as fast as you can to earn some easy points.

Basic Step

Basic Step Objective:

Step on and off the board in time to the rhythm.

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start

In step aerobics, you have to step on and off the balance board in time to what's shown onscreen. You'll get an "OK" for performing the move, but you'll obtain a "perfect" if you nail the timing! The better your performance, the more energetic the music becomes.

Tips* Timing the moves perfectly can be tricky. The ideal time to step on and off the board is right as the list scrolls to the next move. The music is actually synced to your movements, so try using it as a guide to time your movements.

Advanced Step

Advanced Step Objective:

Step on and off the board in time to the rhythm.

How to Unlock: Complete Basic Step 3 Times

Advanced Step is both longer and more complicates than Basic Step. This time, there are two new moves: the green arrows indicate that you need to kick your leg out in the shown direction, while the purple icons mean that you need to step onto the board sideways in the shown direction. It can be tricky at first, but you'll soon get used to it.

Tips* Timing the moves perfectly can be tricky. The ideal time to step on and off the board is right as the list scrolls to the next move. The music is actually synced to your movements, so try using it as a guide to time your movements.

Free Step

Free Step Objective:

Step on and off the board in time to the rhythm.

How to Unlock: Play Advanced Step 3 Times

In Free Step, it's just you stepping on and off the board for 10 minutes. Since there is no music, it's encouraged that you watch TV, while letting the sounds emit from the Wii Remote speaker provide you with the proper timing.

Tips * You can adjust the sound that the Wii Remote speaker makes, as well as the pace of the exercise by pressing the "A" button or D-pad.

Basic Run

Basic Run Objective:

Jog in place at a constant speed to keep pace with your trainer.

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start

Jogging doesn't require the balance board at all. Instead, simple slip the Wii Remote into one of your pockets and then jog in place.

Tips* I've found the Wii Remote to be most accurate when placed vertically in your pocket.

If your pocket's too large for a good grip, try holding onto it instead. The most important part of jogging is maintaining the same pace - by doing so, you can actually exceed 100%! If you see a dog run past, try chasing after it by running really fast to find an alternate route!

2-Player Run

2-P Run Objective:

Jog in place with a friend.

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start

This is just like jogging (above), except with two-people. Just keep in mind that it's not a race; just try to maintain the same speed throughout for a good rating.

Tips* I've found the Wii Remote to be most accurate when placed vertically in your pocket.

Free Run

Free Run Objective:

Jog in place at your own pace for 10, 20, or 30 minutes.

How to Unlock: Complete Basic Run 6 Times.

Free Jogging allows you to run for 10, 20, or 30 minutes without a trainer. Even so, you should still try to maintain the same pace for a good rating.

Wii Fit Yoga

Back to Table of Contents

Yoga - Work on your balance and flexibility with Yoga poses and activities like:

Deep Breathing, Half-Moon, Dance, Cobra, Bridge, Spinal Twist, Shoulder Stand, Warrior, Tree, Sun Salutation, Standing Knee, Palm Tree, Chair, Triangle and Downward-Facing Dog.

Wii Fit has 15 different yoga exercises that provides interactive instruction and feedback based on your form.

In fact, the game does such an effective job that it doesn't leave much room for us to elaborate! But with that said, here are a few pointers to keep in mind as you go about your yoga routine.

Remember to breathe... but properly

Breathing during yoga is also quite important;

however, you can't just breathe willy-nilly, like you are now (well, you could, but you'd also be missing the point). Instead, breathing should be done slowly, deeply, and rhythmically.

Thankfully, Wii Fit provides an on-screen display of when to inhale and when to exhale in the form of a growing/shrinking blue circle.

Inhale when the blue circle shrinks...

Inhale when the blue circle shrinks...
Inhale when the blue circle shrinks...

...and exhale when it grows outward.

...and exhale when it grows outward.
...and exhale when it grows outward.

Posture & Balance -

Try your best to replicate the pose your trainer shows on screen although it may be difficult, you'll only reap the benefits if you perform the exercises correctly.

And remember, while the Balance Board does a pretty good job of keeping an 'eye' on your performance, it's not perfect, and can't tell if you're performing a pose perfectly or not.

However, what the balance board does excel at is providing feedback on your balance - one of the most important, and beneficial aspects of yoga. During most exercises, a Wii Balance board icon will appear on-screen. The yellow circle indicates the proper zone for your center of balance - try to keep the red dot in that area. Once you've centered your balance, try your best to keep it as stable as possible. That means no extraneous leaning, moving, or wobbling!

Yoga New Exercises

- The more you put into Wii Fit, the more you'll get out.

That not only includes self-health, but also additional yoga exercises (among others) that the game rewards you with spending time with Wii Fit.

Wii Fit Balance Games

Back to Table of Contents

Balance Games: The balance portion is where you'll find the most "game" like offerings of Wii Fit.

Get into the action with fun, balanced-based games like Soccer Heading, Ski Slalom, Ski Jump, Table Tilt, Tightrope Walk, Balance Bubble, Penguin Slide, Snowboard Slalom and Lotus Focus.

Soccer Heading Objective:

Head the soccer balls, but avoid the cleats and pandas!

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start.

Your teammates will take turns kicking either soccer balls, cleats, or panda heads at you. You'll score a point if you headbutt a soccer ball, but you'll lose a point if a cleat hits you, and three points if you get nailed by a Panda head. You'll have to shift you body weight left/right to lean your Mii in either direction. Keep in mind that you do not actually have to make a headbutt motion; your Mii will take care of that for you - just focus on lining yourself up with the soccer balls (or dodging out of the way, in case of a cleat or panda head).

Tips * During the slow sections, try returning your Mii to the center so that you can quickly lean in either direction. If both a soccer ball and a cleat/panda are flying at you, sometimes it's better to avoid both altogether, instead of going for the ball and risk being hit by the panda.

try returning your Mii to the center so that you can quickly lean in either direction

try returning your Mii to the center so that you can quickly lean in either direction

Table Tilt

Table Tilt Objective:

Tilt the board to roll the marbles into the holes.

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start.

You control how the table tilts by adjusting your weight on the board. You'll have to carefully manipulate the board to roll the balls into the holes, without dropping a ball of the side. If you do accidentally drop a ball, the board will spin around 180 degree (possibly messing up other balls on the table) and will then drop the fallen ball back onto the center.

Tips * The edge of most of the boards is curved slightly, creating a lip that can hold a ball in place so long as you don't tilt the board too far. This is key when multiple balls - try focusing on one at a time, tilting the board just enough to roll that ball toward the hole without causing the others to tip over the edge.

* The key to winning is to roll the balls slowly and gently - because the lip will hold the marbles in, you can focus on just one at a time.

The key to winning is to roll the balls slowly and gently

The key to winning is to roll the balls slowly and gently
The key to winning is to roll the balls slowly and gently

Penguin Slide

Penguin Slide Objective:

Tilt the iceberg to have the penguin catch the fish!

How to Unlock: Accumulate 1:30 Wii Fit Credits

You're a Penguin trapped on an iceberg and you're hungry! Thankfully, the local fish just love to throw themselves onto your iceberg - the blue ones are worth +1 point, the green are +2, and the rare red ones are +10. You'll have to shift your body weight left and right to tilt the iceberg in either direction - your penguin will then slide downhill whichever way it's tilting. But be careful that he doesn't slide off the side, otherwise you'll have to wait several seconds for him to hop back on.

Tips * Try to stay in the center of the iceberg whenever possible. Not only will this help prevent you from sliding off the side, but it also allows the shortest amount of time to grab the fish on either side.

* Occasionally, a large red fish will appear beneath the iceberg and will swim back and forth - keep a careful eye on him, because when he dives even deeper, that indicates he's about to jump out of the water on that side and float above the iceberg, giving you just a second or two to catch him. His hide is worth 10 points, but the iceberg doesn't tilt high enough to grab him. Instead, you'll have to position yourself just below him, then quickly tilt the iceberg in the opposite direction to toss the penguin upward, into the fish.

Try to stay in the center of the iceberg whenever possible.

Try to stay in the center of the iceberg whenever possible.
Try to stay in the center of the iceberg whenever possible.

Ski Slalom

Ski Slalom Objective:

Ski down the mountain while navigating between the flag gates!

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start.

Ski down the mountain slope and try to navigate through the flags for +1 point each. You'll gain additional points the faster you complete the challenge. Take a look at the Balance Board icon in the top-right corner; the blue bar along the top represents the 'speed zone' - try to keep your center of balance in that zone to scoot down the mountain at top-speed.

Tips * The flag gates always alternate between the left and right sides, so try to turn through each one so you're already facing the next!

Tightrope Walk

Tightrope Walk Objective:

Cross the tightrope without losing balance...but watch out for the trap!

How to Unlock: Accumulate 0:10 Wii Fit Credits

Don't worry - you don't actually have to walk in order to cross the tightrope. Instead, you merely have to alternate between shifting your side to side in order to mimick walking - each time you do, your Mii should take a step forward, as long as you're balanced. Occasionally, an Iron Jaw will impede your path - to jump over it, crouch down, then stand up quickly (but don't actually jump!)

Tips * Wait until the iron jaw is right in front of you before jumping, otherwise you may land right on top of it! Don't jump unless you're totally centered on the rope, otherwise you'll leap to the side and fall off, failing the challenge.

Snowboard Slalom

Snowboard Slalom Objective:

Snowboard around the flags!

How to Unlock: Accumulate 2:00 Wii Fit Credits

Tilt the board sideways (the power button should be on the left) and stand on it like a snowboard. Similar to skiing, the goal is to slide down the mountain around the flags - go left around the blue ones and right around the red ones. Try to keep your weight toward the top the board, in the blue zone shown on the icon, for a speed boost.

Tips * Like with skiing, the flags alternate left/right, so try to set yourself up for the next flag after boarding past one.

Like with skiing, the flags alternate left/right, try to set yourself up for the next flag

Like with skiing, the flags alternate left/right, try to set yourself up for the next flag

Ski Jump

Ski Jump Objective:

Ski down the mountain and jump at the end!

How to Unlock: Unlocked from Start.

Crouch down and get ready to ski down the slope! As you slide down the mountain, keep your weight forward & center (in the blue circle zone) for maximum speed. The red zone at end of the slope is where you need to "jump" - but don't actually jump on the Balance Board (he doesn't like that), but instead stand straight up quickly and lean forward.

Tips * Crouch! Not only will this ease your ability to apply proper weight to the front of the board, but you have to crouch in order to "jump" at the end (by standing straight up quickly). Don't actually jump! If you do, Wii Fit will quit the game right then and there, and you wouldn't want to make that poor little Balance Board upset, would you?

you have to crouch in order to "jump" at the end (by standing straight up quickly).

Balance Bubble

Balance Bubble Objective:

Maneuver the bubble through the course without touching the walls!

How to Unlock: Accumulate 1:00 Wii Fit Credits

In this task, you'll steer your Mii Bubble through a hazard-filled course by leaning around on the balance board - the further you lean, the faster the bubble travels in that direction.

Tips * Go right at the split-path, as it's significantly wider. If you move fast, you can avoid confrontations with the bees altogether!

Zazen

Zazen Objective:

Sit perfectly still and don't disrupt the candle!

How to Unlock: Accumulate 3:00 Fit minutes

Tips* Sit on the Balance Board cross-legged and don't move a muscle. Any twitch you make will cause air to rush over the candle, potentially putting it out!
