Yard Games - An Easy Way to Amp Up Your Next Cookout

Updated on July 6, 2012

Cookouts are a great way to enjoy good food, good weather, and family and friends. Quality yard games are a way to take a good cookout to the next level. Below are a few classic yard games that are sure to liven up any cookout.

1. Bocce

A fun yard game that can be played with 2 or 4 people. The object is to get your balls closest to the community ball.

2. Ladder Ball

The object of this game is to reach a score of 21 by throwing the rope at the ladder so that it attaches itself on one of the three rungs. The lowest rung gets you 3 points, the middle rung gets you 2, and the top rung gets you 1 point.

3. Horse Shoes

A classic. You know the game, toss horse shoes at a stake and get three points for a ringer, 2 points for a leaner, and 1 point for being within a horseshoe width of the stake.

4. Corn Hole

One of the most popular yard games these days. The object is to land the beanbag on the board or, better yet, in the small circular hole in the middle of the board. If you get it in the hole you get 3 points and if you make it onto the board you get 1 point. This game is similar to Bocce and Ladder Ball in that it can be played with 2 or 4 people.

5. Badminton

Another classic. This game can be played with or without a net. Rules are similar to volleyball or tennis where you try to hit the birdie back and forth with rackets as many times as you can.
