There is a couple of ways to do this.
Firstly you can hire a good chess coach (okay that is both pretty difficult and expensive)
Some more affordable things you can do.
1 Study a lot of games, and not the newest games with a lot of theory, a good basis can be better achieved through well annotated classic games.
2. Watch some videos from the great site chesslectures.com (they are about 25$ a month so I should think it is affordable, and they update all the time).
3. Play a lot of games whether online blitz games or live blitz, correspondence or over the board tournament games, they all help.
Personally I do all of the above, I also philosophy over chess without thinking of moves or anything.
Hope you can use some of this information.
