To answer your question with a question, "why would they?". Although yes my attention has been primarily on video games all my life instead of school and college, being autistic I am easily drawn to anything but any task at hand. So video games are not the sole reason why my life isn't on the track I'd hoped for, because you could replace them with films, books, other forms of media, art and so on and I could still give you the same answer.
Though I can say they're very costly and are destroying my personal savings and current income. Would I say they're the sole cause for my addiction to spending? Again, no. I would spend money on films, books I want, music I can't play (LPs instead of CDs for example) and various other things - the only difference is video games cost more.
