I'd almost recommend WoW but there's far too many traps to fall into as a new player such as 'perks guilds', being mass-invited to them, hostility when asking serious questions and a general lack of willingness to do things with other people. However if you go on the official forums and set yourself up an account, you can find players who would love to help you and get you into the game. Some may even invite you to a genuine newcomer's guild and there you'll find everything you need.
There's loads of MMORPGs out there but every single one has its ups and nosedives. With WoW there's a new expansion coming out and there's loads of controversy, so it's up to you if you want to get involved but be prepared for flak and bad first impressions. I started out in that game when the community was apparently really good, so now I'm not so sure what to recommend.
For now I'll say Guild Wars 2 and the upcoming Wildstar.
I hope you find what you're looking for, and a big welcome from an MMORPG player!
