Antique Hummel Figurines

Antique Hummel figurines have long been adored by people around the world. They have been and continue to be collected because of the cuteness of the children depicted in them and their continued pricing value.

Like potato chips, most people can't have just one. You get one, and have to have more. Perhaps you are interested in a specific theme, or maybe a certain age. Whatever, your desire, antique Hummel figurines remain a worthy investment.

At most any given time literally hundreds of Hummel figurines may be listed on eBay. However, make sure what you are look at is in a true Hummel and not a knockoff or look alike.

These whimsical child figurines originated in the 1930s after postcards depicting the sketches of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel attracted German porcelain designer Franz Goebel. He purchased the rights to produce his firstline of themin 1935.

These attractive figures were appealing not only to Europeans, but to Americans as well, especially those who emigrated from the European region of Germany, Switzerland and Austria and their families. They were quickly bought up and proudly displayed in U.S. homes, especially on the East Coast.

During World War II, U.S. soldiers stationed in Germanyalso sent home Hummel figurines to their mothers, wives and girls back home as gifts. Their popularity continued to rise into the 1970s where the became a very desirable collector's item.

However, that was the peak time for them. Many antique Hummel figurines are not quite worth the value that was set in the '70s, but they remain a stable collectible here in the U.S.

These figurines depicting children of the '30s and '40s, continue to be made today through the work of careful craftsman. Each is hand painted at the Goebel Porzellanfabrik Factory in West Germany and each line continues to be pre-approved by the sisters of the Convent of Siessen, where Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel worshipped.

Most any antique collectible book has a section on antique Hummel figurines. Be careful of pricing guides, as these vary from the years they were published. Also be aware the pricing guides are just that, guides. They are not necessarily the actual price that any particular piece will bring at any given time. After all, pricing is subject to demand. However, it is safe to assume that in general, the older the piece and/or the fewer that were made of any given figurine, the higher the value.

Every true Hummel figurine has the Goebel back stamp on the bottom. If there isn't one, it isn't a true Hummel. This stamp has changed through the years, thus helping to determine the age of any given piece. These stamp marks can be found in collectible books and various sources online.

As with any porcelain antique, they must beclean with no chips or cracks to retain their value. Make sure that any listing you consider purchasing not only gives a full explanation of the piece, but detailed photos as well.

Because of their popularity, there are Hummel clubs around the country and internet groups. You can learn from these diehard collectors, or you can just make you own way with your own interests. It is really up to you. There is little doubt that Hummel antique figurines will continue to be an important part of history well into the future. It is pretty much a household name and should remain so.

I have several pieces from a collection owned by my mother. I have added to the collection of approximately 50 pieces. I have one large "Heavenly Protection" with a 1930s marking that I purchased from an estate auction in 1993. I have NEVER seen this marking in person only in books. I wondered about the value. The item is in overall great condition, considering the age and that I am the second owner. Can anyone help?I can provide pix.
