The Originals...

Blythe dolls are a very popular and hot item when the holidays or other gift-giving occasions come around. In fact, any vintage dolls that are unique looking are always a hit at any time, especially for those who collect and cherish them.

If you are a doll collector, these are a must-have for your growing collection and ANY time is a great time to snag one at a great price

These cuties date back to the 70's and they were not as popular back then as you might think. However, women who once had these dolls long ago are completely obsessed with collecting them today.

They have really big, beautiful eyes and an over-sized head with cute hairstyles of the times. They were originally sold by Kenner in 1972 and created by Allison Katzman, but there are many replicas today, such as the Ashton Drake reproductions of the Kenner Blythe dolls.

There was a lack of interest in the doll at first, but they have become a very popular item as time has gone by.

Why Are Women of Today Obsessed with Collecting these Whimsical Dolls?

This is a hot item for many adult women today. Why is that? What is so special about dolls that were released in 1972?

They were not very popular back then, but they sure are today! In fact, people are paying as much as $300 or more per doll.

Barbie sure does not sell for that much -- unless you find a vintage Barbie, of course.

I personally feel that these are truly adorable...

Their big eyes make them very exotic looking. And their pouty mouths make them look shy but a little bit flirty and mysterious.

I think the obsession could possibly stem from the unique look of these unusual dolls. It's very different from your typical Barbie doll -- a little bit like a Bratz doll. I think it's a mix of the two modern-day dolls.

@julieannbrady: Thanks Julie. I actually have a cat (1 of 3, currently) that looks a lot like the big, sad-eyed cats from the artwork that was popular when I was growing up. His name is Sinatra! :o)

I have always loved the collectible Blythe dolls ... I am into "big eye" expressive art. These dolls are so inspiring ... with eyes that are windows of their soul.

These look so sweet! I love that they're not overly made up or dressed in sleazy clothes like some of today's dolls.
