Best Climbing Frames and Rock Walls for Kids

Updated on January 15, 2012

Children love climbing - it is a great way for them to burn off some of that excess energy that otherwise has them climbing the walls. Not only that, but installing a climbing frame or 'rock' wall in your backyard will help to strengthen children's muscles and promote confidence and good coordination. A climbing frame or wall, if chosen correctly, will give your children years of outdoors fun. The examples featured on this page can all accommodate multiple children at any one time, and make a fantastic alternative to the usual slide, swing or trampoline. Children as young as three can use a climbing frame (with adult supervision), although you should check the manufacturer's product specifications before making a purchase. Older siblings will enjoy them too, as will neighborhood friends.

Step2 Skyward Summit

The Step2 Skyward Summit is an exciting and authentic-looking 'rock' wall, designed for children from four to eight. Not only does it encourage the coordination that kids develop from climbing and being active, but it is an appealing base for imaginative play as well.

The Skyward Summit stands at over 2 meters (80") high, and has a maximum weight limit of 320Ibs (up to four children). The maximum weight limit for the platform is 80Ibs (one child).

The Skyward Summit has four sides on which to climb, plus additional crawl-through features. There are two climbing cargo nets, one floor net and nine grips. 100 square feet of outer climbing space means that there is plenty of room for everyone! There is a hole at the top of the summit for peeking out. This product is sturdy, durable and manufactured in the USA, as are the majority of Step2's toys.

Lifetime Geometric Dome Climber

The Lifetime Geometric Dome Climbing Frame is a good quality product designed for children from the ages of 3 - 10 years (although it can accommodate older children). It has received great customer feedback and is ideal for mutiple children - up to 6 kids can climb at any one time. Made using weather and rust-resistant powder coated steel (which reduces heat retention resulting in a higher level of comfort) this is a sturdy, heavy-duty and durable frame which should last for years. The frame boasts molded handles to grip for easier climbing.

The Geometric Dome is 5 ft tall and 10 ft wide. The maximum weight capacity is 600Ibs. At the time of this article, this product is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 on, which indicates very high customer satisfaction.

Kettler Trimmstation Swing Set

The Kettler Trimmstation Swing Set comes with plenty of climbing opportunities. Adhering more to the traditional style of playground equipment, there is plenty to do and enough space for several children to play alongside one another. The ever-popular monkey bars are a great hit with older children, and really help to promote strength in the upper arms. There is also a ladder, poles, a trapeze, swing and climbing rope. A slide could also be purchased and added at a later date, if desired, to extend the set still further.

This set is very sturdy and of an exceptionally high quality. It will last for a long time, although you should be prepared to cement the equipment fairly deeply into the ground, as many reviewers have pointed out. The heavy-duty steel is coated with a fade-and-rust resistant powder, which will keep the equipment in good condition over the years.

The Trimmstation Swing Set has received excellent customer feedback and would be a wonderful addition to a backyard. Kettler is a German company with a record of producing high quality play equipment, and the Trimmstation is suitable for kids from the age of three upwards, whilst also ideal for the older ones.

Those look like a lot of fun. My grand baby is only 6 months old, but I see some of this equipment in his future. Thanks
