Best Multiplayer Games for Playstation 2 (PS2)

The Playstation 2 has one of the biggest game catalog of any video game console ever made. The wide variety of games available is amazing - better yet, these days you can find them for a fraction of the price of current generation console games.

This article will explore the best multiplayer games on the Playstation2, including some that aren't so well known, to help you make an informed decision about what you'll play next!

Sadly the online component of most games is now not supported, but that won't stop you from grabbing a couple of controllers and inviting a few friends for some offline multiplayer.

Burnout 3: Takedown

Genre: Driving

Difficulty: 6/10

Learning Curve: Easy to play, Difficult to master

If you're looking for cars - really fast cars - then Burnout 3 is the game to beat. The game offers the usual racing modes, but offers extra incentive to "takedown" your opponents which it rewards with extra speed.

The other main game mode on offer pits you against friends (or online) to cause the biggest crash you possibly can. You can do all this and more while controlling a wide range of vehicles including sedans, Formula-1s, buses and even a fire truck.

Timesplitters 2

Genre: First Person Shooter

Difficulty: 8/10

Learning Curve: Medium

Players: 1-16 (with multiple consoles)

When it comes to shooters, the Playstation 2 has lots of them - but one of the most popular is Timesplitters 2.

While the game has plenty of single player options, the most fun can be had by connecting up your friends consoles and playing a game with up to 16 people at a time. Being able to cater for so many players make this game rare for it's time.

The characters, weapons and worlds are full of fun and colour that will bring you back for more. The game also allows you to handicap more skilled players to ensure new players aren't easily targeted.

Tekken Tag Tournament

Genre: Fighting

There are a few good fighting game on the PS2. Tekken is a long running series that can be fun for novices and experts alike.

There is a huge cast of characters and arenas to choose from - and this installment allows you to choose two characters for each fight, and swap them in and out at will, making strategy just as important as the button mashing.

Super Monkey Ball Deluxe

Genre: Puzzle/Mini Game

Difficulty: 8.5/10

Learning Curve: Gets difficult quickly

3. Guide balls through levels collecting bananas to finish each level.

Sounds crazy, but it works. Super monkey ball allows you to make your way through an immense collection of puzzles ranging from easy-peasy to impossible, and also includes multiplayer mini games that kids and grown ups will find entertaining.

SSX 3

Genre: Sports

Difficulty: 6/10

Learning Curve: Slow and Steady

Players: 1-2

The sense of scale in SSX 3 is like few other games of it's time, and the landscapes are quite spectacular.

You have the choice to roam free around the mountain slopes, or stop at designated areas for one of the many races and half pipe challenges. Races are littered with objects to grind and ledges to jump off. If roaming free the game allows you to board down the mountain from top to bottom in one sitting - which can take over 30 minutes at top speed.

Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal

Genre: Third Person Shooter/Action

Difficulty: 7/10

Learning Curve: Medium

Players: 1-2

The third in the Ratchet and Clank series, this game gives a lot more focus to multiplayer gaming, while the single player is still a lot of fun. You control your character in third person view, and while this is sometimes a problem compared to a first person perspectives - not so Ratchet and Clank, it controls really well. As the names suggests, the game is filled with a humorous tone - for example one of the vast range of weapons is called the Qwack-o-ray which turns opponents into ducks.

Genre: Puzzle

Difficulty: 6/10

Learning Curve: Slow and Steady

Players: 1-2

Roll around the levels, collecting any object you touch. You will find yourself travelling across cities, bedrooms, farms, oceans, racetracks and even outer space in your quest to roll up as much as possible.

This Japanese fan-favourite sounds crazy, but is really well executed. You can play with or against a friend to see who can roll up the most on each level - and the number of objects to find is immense.

Guitar Hero/Rock Band

Genre: Music

Difficulty: 7/10

Learning Curve: Medium

Players: 1-4

With a controller that looks like a guitar, this is a great way for people to interact with music without going to the trouble of learning a new, complicated instrument. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are essentially two competing franchises in the same music rhythm game market, however Rock Band also allows use of drum and microphone controllers to play along with your friends.

Just tap, strum or sing when your cue comes on the screen!

Singstar

Genre: Music

Difficulty: 4/10

Learning Curve: Pick up and play

Players: 1-2

The game is designed to be picked up by anyone and there a wide variety of singstar games that can make your song collection even more diverse. The game is also available on Playstation 3, and all PS2 microphones and singstar disks are compatible with the PS3 version.

Buzz: The Mega Quiz

Genre: Quiz

Difficulty: 5/10

Learning Curve: Pick up and play

Players: 1-8

Twisted Metal Black

A little known gem, this game centres around vehicular combat. Load your rockets and machine guns and take across the dark, gritty landscapes to destroy your enemies. It's certainly entertaining, but not for kids.
