The Best Party Board Games of All Time
Great Party Games
If you're looking for a fun board game that will make your party a hit, look no further! Here's a list of some of the best board games for parties that are out on the market.
When deciding what board game to buy, keep the following questions in mind:
1. How many people will be playing?
You don't want to end up buying a game that won't be able to accommodate enough people! If you find a game you really want, but it isn't able to entertain enough people, there's usually a creative way to add a few more players. Teams work wonders in adding on more players - coins also make great impromptu pieces.
2. How often will you use it?
If you're only going to be using a game once, it's probably not worth buying a more expensive game. However, if you foresee yourself using a pricier game a lot, then by all means go for it!
3. Will your group enjoy it?
This is the most important one! Even if a game's premise sounds fun to you, consider what your friends will think of it. A rowdier group will not want to sit down and concentrate on a game, whereas a quieter group will not want a game that is too 'in your face'.

Telestrations - 4-8 Players
Telestrations is a hilarious game that will keep your entire group laughing!
You don't need to buy the board game to play this game - although it is more convenient and accessible via the board game. As a cheaper alternate to buying telestrations, you can simply give each player a piece of paper, tell them to tear it into 8 or so pieces, and stack the pieces on top of each other. Have each person write a word or phrase on the top piece of paper; then have everyone pass their papers to the left. The next player will put the top sheet of paper on the bottom of the pile, and attempt to draw out the previous word. The next player then tries to write a word to decribe the picutre. Rinse, lather, repeat, until all the blank sheets of paper are gone!
"I LOVE this game! I've played this with teenagers, young adults and grown-ups alike. Everyone that plays this game thinks it's fun! It's a great combo of the games telephone and pictionary. Don't worry if you can't draw, that just adds to the fun. It's so fun at the end to see what the starting word was, and where it ended, or where it went wrong. Highly recommend this game!" - Amazon Reviewer Tracy
Pitchcar - 2-8 Players
Pitchcar is one of the more versatile party games out there. You're given a several set of 'roads' that you can use to construct your own racetrack. Each player is given a colored disk, which you then flick around the track. Whoever is the first to complete three laps, wins! It's very simple, but very satisfying too. For a more detailed review, check out Ender Wiggin's Pictorial Review of Pitchcar
This game has a ton of expansions if you want to build more larger or more complicated tracks. Start with the original and work your way up if you find yourself wanting more.
Taboo is a crazy, fast paced game that will have everyone laughing! Try to get your teammates to guess a word, but be careful not to use the 'taboo' words.
"I'm not a "game person". But one night my family convinced me to try Taboo, and I got hooked. It's involving, yet not so difficult that there's a lot of pressure. Taboo is rightly considered a classic." - Amazon reviewer Sardan
Balderdash - 2-6 Players
Balderdash is a great party game that will have everyone laughing! Players take turns drawing a card, and then reading an outlandish movie, person, law, initials or word that players will then have to attempt to guess (For example: Define Oomancy, or what does SLUF stand for?). Everyone's guesses are then mixed together, along with the right answer, and read one at a time. Players than take turns guessing which is the correct answer - at the end they get points for having their own answer guessed by other players, or by correctly guessing the right answer.
"Balderdash might be the funniest game my friends and I have ever played. It is basically a bluffing game gone wild. My friends and I have never laughed so hard playing any other game. And we have tried them all." - Amazon Reviewer Efrain Rivera Jr.
Wits and Wagers - 3-7 Players
Proclaimed "The most award winning party game in history!", Wits and Wagers is a trivia game with a twist. You don't need to be good at trivia to win; you just have to know who is! Every player submits an answer, and then places bets on who they think was closest to the actual answser. At the end of the game, whichever player has the most chips wins! It's a great game that ends of being a lot of fun.
See the video below for a more thorough look at the mechanics and pieces of the game.
"We buy several games each year, and this was the best game we have bought in years. Other friends and family members have purchased this game after playing it. Highly recommended. " - Amazon Reviewer Robert
Apples to Apples - 4+ Players
Apples to Apples - the classic party game! Each player is dealt a hand of words (e.g. choir boys, republicans, etc), and then a card with a description (Wild, Soft, etc) is laid in the center. Each player submits one of their words to a 'judge', who decides which word matches the description the best. Players also take turns being the judge. The first player to get five description cards wins!
What's great about Apples to Apples is how many people it can accommodate. It's easy to add in new players, even in the middle of a game. It's also extremely simple to explain, and is perfect to play in short bursts.
"Trying to find a game that a large number of people can play, one that can be a great equalizer of abilities, yet is always fun? Go no further than Apples to Apples." - Amazon Reviewer Daniel Edelen
Dixit - 3-6 Players
Dixit is a great game for a more creative crowd. It has some similarities with Balderdash and Apples; except rather than giving words to match a definition, you're giving pictures! The drawings are all premade, and (in my opinion) all look very nice.
It takes the right group of people to make this game work; watch the video below to help decide if this is the right game for your group of friends.
"The game can be fun with three people, but like Apples to Apples, it's more fun with even more people. I think the whole concept is totally brilliant. This is not like any board game you currently own. " - Amazon reviewer Basketball fan
Twister - 2+ Players
Twister is the perfect game if you have a rowdier group! It's quick, active, and a lot of fun.
Tumblin Dice - 1-4 Players
Tumblin Dice is a dexterity game where you try to flick and push your dice into the highest position to earn points. The board is separated into five different categories; each of which gives you a different multiplier. This game takes a little bit of skill, a little bit of luck, but what's nice about it is how short it takes to play!
The rules recommend playing four rounds, but if you're entertaining a lot of people, have them only play one so everyone can get an opportunity to play. Likewise, playing tournament "knock out" style can be exciting and fun for all party goers.
"Good quality dexterity games, no matter how much they cost, are nearly always a good investment for a gamer. They're the kind of game that can be played by everyone, are usually a great deal of fun, and get hours and hours of play. Tumblin-Dice is a worthy member of the exclusive list of high-class dexterity games, and occupies a place of honor in my home alongside more well-known titles like PitchCar and Crokinole." - Ender Wiggins
Mafia - 5+ Players
Mafia is a fun and challenging game of deception. This game requires the whole group to sit down and stay focused on Mafia for about twenty minutes or so; it can be a ton of fun with the right group. However, if you're friends won't be able to sit down and focus, this isn't the right game for them.
The rules of mafia can be complicated, so it's best if you read them here.
Also, if you have never moderated a game before, I recommend you read this.
"Final words: the artwork is beautiful, there is a lot of re playability and production value in this game. The creators have really thought about the way it works and if you purchase it, I guarantee you will have a good time!" - Amazon reviewer M. G. Humphrey
Card games can be a great addition to parties - especially those with larger people. Here are some card games that will help make your next party a hit.
Dutch Blitz - 2-4 Players
A cross between solitaire and speed, this high tension game is easy to learn, but difficult to master. This game is great fun for a smaller group of friends!
"Overall, I recommend this game as a fast-paced, lively activity, sure to be a hit. It is fun for beginners, but experienced players can develop strategies that make playing both challenging and fun, so you are not going to play Dutch Blitz a few times and get bored." - Amazon Reviewer M. Bowers
Spoons - 3+ Players, Ages 7+
Spoons is an infamous card game, perfect for parties because of its simplicity and competitive nature. All you need is a deck of cards, and some spoons.
This game goes over especially well with teenagers and college students; older groups may not enjoy it as much. Younger children are able to play, but may get hurt if playing with an older group. The more people playing, the more fun spoons tends to be. If a group is particullarly large, you may have to play with two decks of cards.
One popular variation is called "Ultimate spoons". Rather than placing the spoons in a circle, place the spoons in an open area away from the group. Once the first person gets a set of four, everyone runs for the spoons!
Jungle Speed - 3-8 Players
Jungle speed is a fast paced, fun filled card game that has a lot of similarities with spoons. Instead of playing with spoons in the center, there's just one totem pole. Each player is given a set of shapes; when you draw a card that matches with someone's elses top card, you two "duel". See the video below for a more indepth explanation.
Just like spoons, if you want a more intense version, put the totem in another room! With only two people dueling at a time, it's a much more controlled chaos than playing Ultimate Spoons. However, it's still crazy and fun! There is one special card where everybody needs to grab the totem, but other than that it is not as hectic.
"Jungle Speed is a fast paced and fun game. You will want to play it again and again. It's definitely an active game. I recommend it to anyone." - An anonymous Amazon Reviewer
Jungle Speed - Thorough Explanation
Pit - 3-10 Players
Pit is a chaotic and loud game that's a great icebreaker for any group. The premise of the game is simple: Each player is dealt a hand of cards with various crops on them. All at once, players yell out how many cards they want to trade - but not what they're trading! Players yell to make deals as quickly as they can, and as soon as they get eight cards of the same crop, they ring a bell in the middle. The first one to ring the bell wins!
There is a scoring system that goes with this game, but I find it's more fun to play without it. Especially at parties, it will be difficult to get every person to keep track of their score.
This is a great game to start parties with; it will get everyone comfortable with each other, and on top of that it's a blast!
"The best part of this game is that it takes 1 minute to explain and 3-8 people can play with no teams needed. Participants can easily come in and out of the game without messing it up for everyone. It is the ideal party game or family game night game when you want something loud and silly and easy without learning a whole new complex system." - Amazon Reviewer Annie K
