Best Toys for 8 Year Old Boys

Updated on September 11, 2014

What To Buy an 8 Year Old Boy?

My close friend's son just turned 8 and despite having a son of a similar age I was at a loss of what to buy him as a birthday gift. So, I did a bit of research, asked my friend and spoke to the boy in question and came away with lots of ideas. This article features lots of ideas and suggestions of great toys and gifts aimed at 8 year old boys based on what I've learned.

To buy the best toys for 8 year old boys it helps to learn a little bit about how they're developing and what they like. For example, their stamina to exercise is increasing (they can run further and have more endurance for physical activity), this may be useful to know when buying outdoor toys.

They can converse at an almost adult level so they can play more advanced games, this is good to consider when buying board games. They also may have developed an interest in reading.

They like to work things out and understand the reason behind things and there are many educational kits which take advantage of this (snap circuits featured below is a great educational kit for fulfilling this developmental milestone).

Their social skills are also more developed.. They may make friends more easily and tend to have more friends of the same sex. So games and toys they can play in groups are often popular - nerf guns spring to mind as an excellent toy to play with other boys.

So boys this age are full of energy, can be very social but also like learning about the world around them. Read on for examples of the best toys for 8 year old boys.

Educational Toys for 8 Year Old Boys

8 year olds are still very enthusiastic to learn new things. Their attention span is longer. They like a challenge and will take time to focus and complete tasks.

It's therefore a great age to get them educational toys and kits to take advantage of their young curiosity.

Obviously they will have developed specific interests and they will have certain personality traits but it's still a great age to get them to try new things.

Check out some ideas of educational games and kits below.

Boys at 8 year olds like to feel part of a group, particularly with other boys. Therfore many boys this age favor group play, This probably explains why boys at this age love playing nerf guns and nerf wars with their friends. My friend's son definitely loves to play nerf gun wars. I know because I've been there when he's been playing in teams with his friends and brothers (lots of fun, creating dens and running around!)

This has a cross bow and makes a good addition to any nerf gun collection.

Outdoor Toys for 8 Year Old Boys

8 year old boys are getting stronger, have more physical endurance capabilities and have an abundance of energy.

Therefore outdoor toys are great for 8 year old boys. At 8 years old, gross motor skills have been well developed and they will have lost some of their clumsiness. That's why they can use toys such as the pogo stick featured below which require more balance and physical strength.

All the toys below are getting 8 year old boys outside, running around and having fun.

They will have fun completing the construction of the projects and playing with them afterwards.

Lego Ninjago kits (such as the one featured below) are popular with some 8 year old boys at the moment. There are lots of other great themed lego kits too.

Lego also make some fantastic games aimed at this age group and it's worth keeping your eye out for them.

You have fun building the games and the dice before you play them. It's almost as much fun to build the game as well as playing them.
