Best Toys for 18 Month Old Boy
What to Buy For an 18 Month Old Boy?
18 month old boys can be challenging to buy toys for as they are starting to develop at such a fast rate. When I first wrote this article, my youngest son was 18 months and this list has been inspired by the toys he was given. I've udate and is still playing with. I have recommended to buy gifts that are useful for kids at 18 months but will last too. The list includes toys that will hold their attention and maybe help them to develop certain skills and encourage their development. Additionally, they are simply fun to play with.
As well as specific suggestions of toys, I've also written a guide for the types of toys 18 month olds like to play with.
So whether your buying for your child or someone else's please look at some of my suggestions of gifts for 18 month old boys. I hope you like them.

A Guide to Toys for 18 Month Old Boys
This guide was written when my son was 18 months old and hopefully will give you a few ideas.
Push along toys like cars and trains - My son loves to push along all kinds of toys with wheels especially cars. He also like to push along trains on the train table at a friends house.
Toys that stack or have pieces which fit together - At the moment he will spend ages trying to fit the lid on a pretend play saucepan. He also has stacking toys where he tries to put the rings on the ring holder. Blocks which you can build up are another good choice. He has also just started to do big chunky toddler puzzles.
Teasets and kitchens - he is starting to play imaginatively. He likes picking our cups out of the cupboards and pretend to drink out of them. He also loves to play with the toy kitchen at playgroup.
Ride on Toys - He loves ride on toys (especially ones with steering wheels - he will sit on them for ages just moving the steering wheel).
Climbing Toys - My son loves to climb. He will climb up on chairs. A safe climber is always a good choice for this age.
Playing with water- Sometimes you can put my son in the bath and he will spend ages just playing with water, pouring it in and out with cups mainly, having toys which float in the bath and sometimes we just put cars in there for him to play with.

Ride On Toys
My eldest son loved ride on toys from about 18 months to almost 4 years and we have a ride on toy for my little boy at the moment which he loves.
However, if he didn't have one, I would be getting him one of these cool ride ons below.
Step 2 Rollercoaster
This is such a cool ride on toy and if you get it for an 18 month old you should get years of use out of the toy. My son used to go to a toddler group and this was one of toys that all the kids queued up for.
The rollercoaster can be set up indoors and outdoors - so is a great toy for Summer but you can bring it indoors over the Winter too if you have space.
The recommended age is 2 to 5 but there are lots of reviews with younger children on it. You will obviously need to closely supervise your child. You could also just use the car as a ride on around the house if you feel he or she is too young. The ramp could also be used on its own as a track for cars, balls and other toys. Some 18 month olds may need some help getting on and off and supervised during the ride but it won't be long until they're whizzing along.
It's a good toy to get out when you have other children around to your house as they will all love to have a go, so its great entertainment.
Outdoor Ride Ons
There are a lot of ride on toys for this age group that are great for outdoor use.
One idea is an electric ride on toy that they can use in the backyard or along the street. Just press the button and start the ride.
Another idea is the cosy coupe below which was favorite with both of my boys.
Little Tykes Car
My Mom had one of these and all the grandchildren love it especially the younger ones. They sit in it and move the steering wheel about while asking to be pushed around. It actually encourages them to start moving their legs more because they want to move themselves around. Easy to clean and durable. My moms was second hand and has lasted lots of use from all the grandchildren too. It looks cute as well...

Here is a video of an 18 month old boy in the cozy coupe car.
Lots of toys have educational value, but I found my son really started to enjoy and learn from stacking and shape sorter toys at around 18 months. (Check out the shape sorter below).
If you're looking for educational toys, you should also check out this article on educational toys for toddlers.
At 18 months stacking toys are fantastic for developing the following skills:
- Hand eye coordination
- Hand strength
- Spatial awareness
- Improves fine motor skills
- Enhances logical thinking capability
Check out the Melissa and Doug train for the perfect stacking toy for a 18 month old.
Young children love getting their hands on things and exploring them and this stacking train is perfect. You might be surprised how much satisfaction they can get out of adding these small wooden train and its carts together. It comes with lots of different brightly colored blocks that can be easily stacked on top of each other. Once stacked they can push their fully loaded train around which makes this an excellent toy to enjoy while helping build their hand / co-ordination skills.
This is one of the toys that we've bought my son for Christmas. It's arrived and a lot bigger than I anticipated. Perfect for his little hands!
Push Along Toys
Both my sons loved to push toys around at this age. Toys they pushed around included pushchairs. My youngest son used to love pushing around a pushchair at toddler group but it used to make me laugh as he would throw out the toy doll before pushing the stroller!
Another good push toy is a shopping cart. My eldest used to push a shopping cart round and round the house. He used to fill it with all kinds of things, push them around and then take them out again.
Melissa & Doug's Corner Kitchen
We bought our son a kitchen for Christmas as a main gift and he loves it. He enjoys putting things in and out of cupboards, putting lids on saucepans, opening and shutting ovens and lots more.
As in the Summer there are some great outdoor kitchen playsets you can try that include grilling sets.
Kitchen toys are often fun. Things like toy toaster, kettles and toy fridges often have lots of little hands to do as as toddlers get older they can use the for imaginative play as well.
We've bought our son a kitchen this Christmas as a main gift as he loves to play with the kitchen at toddler group, putting things in and out of cupboards, putting lids on saucepans, opening and shutting ovens and
Children love to pretend and this is perfect for children who often like to copy their parents or just get everything out of cupboards (like my son!).
The doors of the cupboards, oven, microwave, refridgerator open and toddlers will love opening and closing the doors and putting things in and out. It comes with lots of accessories for toddlers to play with including 1 coffee pot, 2 plates, 2 cups, 2 forks, 2 knives, 2 spoons, 1 frying pan and 1 phone.
There's lots of other cool features for this kitchen too such as lots of electronic cooking sounds.
Boys Love Their Cars - And Other Vehicles.....
I didn't buy my eldest son any cars when is was this age because i wrongly assumed he was too young. However my second son loved his older brothers car collection. It's been amazing to see him just lying on the floor moving little cars around. We even use them to chill him out before bedtimes.
There are lots of cool cars for toddlers and car playsets, check out some ideas below.
This is a great table for little boys who like cars and trains. It should work with exisitng cars and small Thomas trains but it also comes with a 3 piece train set.
It features a multi-level track and 7 non removable bridges. So you can't lose any of the pieces.
The best thing about this table is that when it's time to clear up, just put all the cars and vehicles inside the table and put the lid on the top. The table top is white and once on it can be used as an activity table as well.
One More Car Toy - Fisher-Price Skyway
I had to include one more car toy as both my boys love cars. My eldest son used to play with toy cars and vehicle playsets every day until he was four!
The Fisher Price Sit n Stand skyway toy is a good choice for toddlers.
There is a similar toy to this at a playgroup I take my son too and he enjoys playing with it.
He puts cars down the ramps and it's fun to see how far they go. He also just uses his hands to push cars along the ramps while still holding them.
The Little People City Skyway is over 3 feet tall, so the cars really zoom down the ramps. But it can be converterd for more imaginative play. It transforms into a town playset where little ones can drive the wheelies cars through the car wash, fill up at the gas pump and run errands. There are 2 cars to play with. The cars are the perfect size for little hands.
If he loves cars and toys with wheels he may also love a first train set. It's not time to get a massive kids train set yet. But there are some great options of toddlers. Check out the Vtech train set below.

Outdoor Toys for 18 Month Olds
It's good to get kids outdoors when you can and there are lots of cool outdoor toys for those warmer, sunnier days. Here are a few of top choices:
A water table, sand pit, swing, play tent, ride on toys, toddler trampoline, playhouse, toy mower and bubble toys.
18 months old is a good age to get a first slide. They will need a little bit of supervision at first but it won't be long until they're climbing the stairs and coming down on their own.
A slide can be used outdoors or indoors in the winter if you have the space. Some slides fold down for easy storage too.
Play tents make really versatile toys. In the Summer they make a great instant shade from the Sun and kids will love to have picnics and snacks in there. But as well as fab outdoor toys, there is nothing to stop you from setting them up indoors during the winter from some imaginative play. You can also attach tunnels to this play tent for extra fun.
Check out a couple of ideas below.
Climber and Slide
Another gem of a toy from Little Tikes and it's a great choice if you have a little climber like my own little boy.
Its like a mini playground that can be stored and opened up in an instant. It includes a fun slide and a climbing wall which children seem to enjoy. In addition it also contains a basket ball hoop and a soccer net with ball. Its surprising how much use they can actually get out of it. The best part if you're worried about space is that it neatly folds away if you want it to . Its an indoor toy but this is just fine in the garden. It stands about 4 feet so just make sure what surface you put it on. As usual it well made and durable with attractive bright gender neutral colors.
Toy Mower - An Outdoor Push Along Toy
As I've already mentioned 18 month olds love toys which you can push along. The Gas n Go mower is a great outdoor choice.
More Cool Toys
Here are some more ideas of fun and cool toys:
Drum kit - Kids of this age love banging on the drums and a drum or little drum kit is the perfect musical toy. Young children will enjoy drumning freestyle and banging to their hearts content.
An aquadoodle drawing set - my youngest son showed an interest in drawing at 18 months. He would love to use his elder brother's crayons and pens but I was always petrified he would draw somewhere he shouldn't.
An aquadoodle set solved all these problems. Toddlers can draw on the mat and you don't have to worry about any mess. You just fill the pen with water and they can draw to their heart's content. The mat dries slowly so they can show you what they have drawn. Some aquadoodle mats are color mats to so little ones can see the colors as they draw.
Toy torch - the vtech torch is an excellent choice. It's a fun flashlight with sounds, melodies and lots of learning fun.
