Best Wii Games for Little Kids

Finding a suitable Wii game for young children can be tricky, as many of them require some reading, but there are a few that specifically cater this age group. Many games just need a parent to set them up, and once they're ready to play, the child can play mostly without reading.

Go Diego Go Safari Rescue - Nintendo Wii

"Great for preschoolers. They will need some help navigating through menus and when something new appears on the screen, but this is one game they should be able to play mostly by themselves. Grown-ups can join in using the second controller."

Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess - Nintendo Wii

"All my kids love this game. It is the easiest one for everyone to learn and play right away. Basically you walk along finding and collecting items, climbing ladders, swinging on vines, skating, and having fun! My 3 yr old can play it all by herself! Almost identical to the Diego game above."

Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey - Nintendo Wii

"My daughter (3) loves this game, even though the nunchuk was hard, she loves to cast the spells with the wiimote. There are 4 princess worlds and 3 levels in each chapter. They follow and collect jewels and get mini tasks while the on screen characters help your princess along the way."

Toy Story Mania! - Nintendo Wii

Mario Party 8

"Plays just like a board game and my kids 8,6,and 4 love it! You jump, hit the dice, move those # of spaces. You get candy for super powers (bowl over other players, steal candy/coins, zap their coins, jump to their spot) and at end of each round- minigames! Mom/Dad love playing too!"

Best Wii Games for Young Children

A lot of games are geared at older children, and teens, and a lot of the very young kids get left out. There is not much of a broad variety of games for very young children when you go looking for them in game stores, and you certainly don't want to give a 5 year old a game that features blood, gore, and adult themes, but here's a list of Nintendo Wii video games that are geared at the young kids!

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga - Nintendo Wii
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga - Nintendo Wii

"An awesome game for families. Two people can play together through the story. Very easy to pick up and play. Cute Lego characters and funny moments. If you like Star Wars, Legos, or just want something you can play with a younger child, this is a great one. If you like this, check out the LEGO Batman and Indiana Jones games."

Animal Crossing: City Folk - Nintendo Wii
Animal Crossing: City Folk - Nintendo Wii

"You live in a town and earn money to upgrade your house and items. You also talk to your animal neighbors. Lots of customization. Simple but addictive and fun. If you've already played the GameCube or DS version, you might not want to get this, as it is very similar. If you enjoyed this, try out Rune Factory."

Cars - Nintendo Wii

"Good variety of characters, mini games and races make this a lot of fun for this age group. Once you win an event, you unlock other areas to play."

Wii Play with Wii Remote

"This "game" has its critics in the adult world, but the mini-games are ideally simplistic for little guys & gals. This is listed so high simply because it's accessible to a younger age. Lower games on this list are more involved, but much more fun."

De Blob - Nintendo Wii
De Blob - Nintendo Wii

"Easy enough for young children, but great fun and challenge for more experienced gamers. Unique, fresh, and fun for the whole family. Authentic color blending and varied music. A must-own, third party, cult hit exclusive to the Wii. Don't miss it."

Educational Wii Games for Toddlers - and Pre-School Children

Games don't have to be just about playing and having fun - these Wii games will help children develop their hand-to-eye coordination, and improve their ability to solve problems.

Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree

"Highly Educational! My highest recommendation for young kids and great fun for all ages. Your young one probably won't be able to handle all the mini-games right away, but you'll be surprised what they can do with a little instruction."

Jumpstart Escape Adventure island - Nintendo Wii
Jumpstart Escape Adventure island - Nintendo Wii

Designed for kids ages 5-9, JumpStart Escape from Adventure Island is the second title in the JumpStart series of adventure-based learning games for the Wii. This action-packed game invites players to use their explorer skills and brain power to find a way to escape a mysterious island after a crash landing strands them there!

Pajama Sam in Don't Fear the Dark - Nintendo Wii

Racing Games for Boys - for the Nintendo Wii

If you know boys who like cars, then these games will be ideal. With plenty of tracks and medals to win in single player mode, they are also great fun to play with siblings or when friends come to visit.

Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel

"This is just an all around, must have, gotta get game! Our boys get tons of play with it. They would go all day on this if we'd let them."

"Later tracks will become way too challenging for young kids, but the intuitive steering-wheel control makes this Kart racer so much easier than all predecessors with traditional console controllers."

Sonic Sega All Stars Racing

"In a frantic battle to the checkered flag, Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in medieval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA."

Cars - Nintendo Wii

"Mario Kart is a more enjoyable racer with more appeal to older gamers, but this one is worthwhile especially if you're fans of the film."

Madagascar Kartz

"Great game. My 5 year old grandson loves it. It's a little difficult at first to steer the cars (even I had problems), but once my grandson learned that he could flip the cars and make them do crazy things, he loved it."

Fighting Wii Games

Many boys love to fight, while their parents would really rather they didn't. There are games for the Wii that will allow them to burn off that excess energy and aggression without hurting anyone else. These games below are good fun but don't have the blood and gore that many parents may object to.

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga - Nintendo Wii
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga - Nintendo Wii

"The game design is brilliant and you'll enjoy as much (or more than) they do. You can play cooperatively, too. The youngest can join you as a "force buddy" and just work the nunchuk when you're a jedi."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

"I was worried about this one being too violent, but there's no bloodshed. :-) The levels are interesting & morph as you play. At the end of each match, the characters that competed & lost clap for the winner. Good sportsmanship, & the boys clap now too!"

Boom Blox - Nintendo Wii
Boom Blox - Nintendo Wii

"Great game! Works on small motor skills & also teaches them force & motion. I like watching them strategically play, & they actually use the game as a model for real building of blocks & magnatiles."

Star Wars the Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels - Nintendo Wii

"You swing the Wii remote to swing the character's lightsaber. I rented this. It's fun to play, but it really tires your arm out. I think the boys would like it though."

More Great Games for Boys

Here are some more Wii games that boys will love!

Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 - Nintendo Wii
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 - Nintendo Wii

"Okay, so the rabbids are just plain kooky and goofy... but the boys love that! My five year old gets a kick out of just dressing the characters up. They play these mini-games non-stop."

SpongeBob SquarePants featuring NickToons: Globs of Doom - Nintendo Wii
SpongeBob SquarePants featuring NickToons: Globs of Doom - Nintendo Wii

"This is similar to other Nicktoon games, but the levels and graphics are better than the previous. The boys also love getting "globbed" like all boys! :-)"

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures - Nintendo Wii
Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures - Nintendo Wii

"No way to lose. You always respawn at your previous location. Enjoyable for multiple gaming skill levels. You will enjoy helping your younger children with the challenging parts."

Zack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure - Nintendo Wii
Zack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure - Nintendo Wii

"Lots of Reading necessary. Entertaining game design! A ton of fun! You will need to play this with your little one (even 5-6yo) and take the controls at times, but it won't be a burden. This game is a blast to play together with your kids"

Monster Lab - Nintendo Wii
Monster Lab - Nintendo Wii

"Monster Lab is set in an eerie, supernatural world where the evil Baron Mharti rules the region with a cruel hand. The player takes on the role of an apprentice scientist who must perform a vast array of intricate experiments to create your very own monster from over 150 monster parts."

Games for Little Girls

Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey - Nintendo Wii
Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey - Nintendo Wii

"For younger gamers who like Disney princesses. You can also have a friend play with you through your journey."

Littlest Pet Shop - Nintendo Wii
Littlest Pet Shop - Nintendo Wii

"My daughter got this game for her 6th birthday and she loves it. She has been playing My Sims and enjoying it but this is perfect for a young girl. She loves to play dress up, so being able to dress her pets, buy them pretty things, and name them is pure joy for her. She needs some help with reading now and again (and spelling the new pets names) but otherwise she does just fine playing this game."

Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess - Nintendo Wii
Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess - Nintendo Wii

"Very accessible to the youngest children with no reading and very little adult assistance required. All Dora games on all consoles are very accessible to their target audience, though they do tend to be effectively repackaged variations on same game."

Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp - Nintendo Wii
Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp - Nintendo Wii

"This game is a good game. I can see it getting old if you have finished the "assignments". It really is very easy but I think you might need to be 5+ to play without frustration. You basically just ride around and ask your instructor what to do. Hell give you assignments like "run this trail" or "go find the water to water your horse". But my 5 year old probably would give it a 7 out of 10 stars and I think its decent."

Cooking Mama: Cook Off
Cooking Mama: Cook Off

"My kids favorite DS game is Cooking Mama, so we bought this one the first time we saw it. This game is pretty much the same, using the Wii remote instead of the stylus, with some new options and lots more recipes. The kids have played it everyday and they love it..."

Petz Rescue Wildlife Vet - Nintendo Wii

"This has great reviews from kids and adults. It is supposed to be great for people who love animals and may be interested in becoming veterinarians. Two thumbs up for vocational preparatory games that are fun!"

Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility - Nintendo Wii
Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility - Nintendo Wii

"Another game that I love and play all the time. It is addictive. My little sister played this for 12 hours straight during last X-mas holiday and she doesn't even like video games."

The Princess and the Frog
The Princess and the Frog

"We purchased this for our 4yr old daughter for xmas to go along with her new wii. We love it. Our 2 yr old likes to dance to the music while big sister plays. Her favorite part is cooking the food...spicy gumbo, cake, etc. I like the dress up segment and the music games. We enjoy playing this game together..."

The DOG Island - Nintendo Wii
The DOG Island - Nintendo Wii

"We bought this game on a whim for my daughter (8 years) who has a hard time getting into any Wii games - This was perfect!!! It is a quest type game, where you have to complete challenges to move forward to the ultimate end of getting the medicine to save your sick sister puppy. While there is a lot of reading, she didn't mind, she's old enough to read and it helps them get directions and stay up on the storyline."

Games for Older Girls

Rune Factory: Frontier - Nintendo Wii
Rune Factory: Frontier - Nintendo Wii

"I love this game. The only downside is that you are forced to play as a boy. There is no girl option. Regardless, it is great."

Little King's Story - Nintendo Wii
Little King's Story - Nintendo Wii

"I have several young daughters at home who love Barbie and Disney Princess games on the Wii. But a father can only take so much! I purchased this game for them for Christmas, in hopes that we could find some common ground, and it was a hit. It's a very simplified Real Time Strategy game, but still manages to be engaging enough to be fun. I highly recommend it."

The Spiderwick Chronicles - Nintendo Wii
The Spiderwick Chronicles - Nintendo Wii

"This may not be appropriate for children under 10 years old, as it is a little scary. While the game features great graphics and a wonderful tale, the idea of there being mystical/magical world with the potential to threaten one's family might be a little too mature for the faint of heart."

MySims Agents - Nintendo Wii
MySims Agents - Nintendo Wii

"This game is extremely fun and addictive (for both children and adults). There are many unlockables including outfits, furniture, trophies, and characters. It is fun for my school age children to play again even after beating it. Definitely worth the money, which is hard to say for all wii games!"

Imagine Fashion Party - Nintendo Wii
Imagine Fashion Party - Nintendo Wii

I bought this game for my 6yr old. She loves it! It is a bit tricky at first to figure out how to handle the remote but it is after all, a game :) There are many levels and different types of challenges. The graphics are pretty good and the music is upbeat. Overall, a great purchase!

ALthough my kids still play a couple games on Wii, they have begun to migrate over to the Kinect of late. I have to say, the interaction is more involved on the Kinect but the accuracy of response, although limited in scope, is still better on the Wii.
