Board Game Bliss

Updated on September 15, 2014

Board Games Make Wonderful Gifts

Board games of any sort, and there are a lot to choose from, are a must over the Christmas holiday period.

Children and adults can get a little bored over the holidays especially at the end of the day when main activities are over and there is nothing much else to do, sometimes hindered by the summer heat, when there was outdoor play to be had, or the cold and snowy weather on the other side of the world.

This is when the everlasting board games, such as scrabble, monopoly, chess and backgammon, come in to play, bringing family and friends together in healthy competition, learning all the way, reveling in the win and learning to lose gracefully.

By turning the televisions, computers and other technology off, yes those mobile phones too, that we have on all the time around the house, makes for a conducive atmosphere for serious play and for the old and young alike.

Very important and useful life lessons are learnt by our children here around the table playing these educational, thought provoking games.

Playing Board Games.

I started playing board games when I was quite young, having two older brothers and a sister started me off, always getting beaten but learning how to swallow my pride, it now comes as a shock when one of them is beaten by their little sister at some of the games played.

I first started playing Monopoly, Scrabble and later came Chess and Backgammon which I seriously could still use some practice with these days.

So later in life when I had a child, the old sets of games would come out in the holidays and the tradition lived on. My daughter was taught most of the things I was at her age as we played with our friends and families.

Of course all these games can be played on-line today and it is hard work to get everyone together and off line to play around the table again.

But it can be done with a bit of effort and organization, the perfect time being around the long holidays Christmas period .

So bring on the board games this Christmas starting by giving one or two to family and friends for these festive holidays.

I must admit to being a bit of a backgammon addict - though I'm not much good at it! I hadn't seen Junior Monopololy before, it looks a lot of fun.
