Bronze Baby Shoes

Updated on October 15, 2014

Preserve Baby Shoes -- Bronze Them!

Bronze baby shoes make a great keepsake. Tiny babies grow up, and frankly, as we all know, they get big.

To remember how little they once were, parents have been having those cute little shoes bronzed for nearly 100 years.

Many companies who do baby shoe bronzing also offer to bronze just about anything else, like pacifiers or baby bottles.

This photo shows a vintage bronze baby shoe made into a bookend. It's a little worse for wear, but I think that adds to the charm!

The Bronzing Process

As you might have guessed, baby shoes don't come bronzed. If they did, babies wouldn't be able to wear them. So, parents and grandparents send those adorable little shoes in to a place that magically coats them in bronze (or copper or silver or gold!) to harden them and protect them so they last forever.

The process that is used to apply the bronze metal (or other metal) to the shoes is called electroplating or electroforming. A metal plating machine applies the bronze to the item being coated.

To read more about the plating process, check out the electroforming page on the Dalmar Web site.

Book Happy, World of Weird Books offers a humorous look at a pamphlet from 1953 on earning a living by bronzing baby shoes:

"Perhaps you think that bronzing

baby shoes is right down there with taxidermy, selling greeting cards or shoes door to door, worm farming, raising chinchillas, or any of the other dismal career-changing come-ons pitched to desperate people

on match covers or in the

back pages of pulp magazines."

I always thought bronzed baby shoes looked nifty. We never had any in our family. I'm amazed that you can actually do this process yourself.
