The Inspiration for Clifford and Emily Elizabeth!
The Clifford series of books was begun in 1963 by Norman Bridwell.
The story of Clifford and Emily Elizabeth came to be after an editor at Harper and Row suggested to Norman Bridwell that he create a story out of one of his sketches. The sketch was of an infant girl and a bloodhound the size of a horse!
Emily Elizabeth was named after Norman Bridwell's daughter. Both Emily and Clifford came from the imaginative stories of Norman Bridwell's wife.
The name of the island Clifford and Emily lived on, "Birdwell Island," bares a strong resemblance to the author's last name!
