Overview...

Whelp here I am covering an indie game, and it's a Smash Bros. Clone called "Combo Devils." It all started when the trailer popped in my Youtube feed on December 21st(yesterday as of me writing this), and I decided to checked it out. Honestly I was expecting another 32-bit fighting game, so imagine my shock when I saw it was a Super Smash Bros Clone.

Combo Devils is being developed by "Punkzilla" which is a five man team based in California.

They had a station featured at Day of The Devs 2023 back in June and I wish I had covered them then. Though the official announcement came at 2024's Game Awards on December 7th. Regardless the trailer showed off the cast of characters fighting at various venues with mechanics that are similar to Super Smash Bros. And this trailer advertised Co-Op Rogue-Lite Story Mode. Similar to beat'em ups like Streets of Rage and Smash Bros. "Space Emissary Mode," this feature allows players to play in a co-op with friends as they face various challenging levels and enemies. You can also find perks and items to help survive these challenges. There are also four player game modes. One of which featured in the trailers where you can battle against your friends in a free-for-all brawl like in Smash Bros.

There also be a rollback netcode for online matches, which will be great for Steam players.

Conclusion...

In conclusion Combo Devils looks like it'll be a lot of fun, despite being a Smash clone. Despite the fact that this trailer is a year old now, the game is still in the works. They just have a Kickstarter being funded and updated regularly. It was also featured at EVO 2025 which had me thinking it was released, but again it's still in the works. Meaning I'll have to keep an eye out on the development process.
