Cozy Coupe--An American Classic!

Updated on June 19, 2014

Little Tikes Manufactures One of the Most Popular "Made in the USA" Ride On Toys Ever!

The Little Tikes Cozy Coupe is one of the best selling cars -- toy and real -- ever! The Cozy Coupe is also a grandparent's best kept secret, or a least THIS grandparent's. I have written several toy reviews based on my own experiences with my 7 grandchildren, now I want to share this ride on toy that will make your home the "fun place to be". I purchased the Cozy Coupe you see here at a garage sale about 7 or 8 years ago and it has consistently been the toy that my grands love to play with when they are visiting.

What also makes the Cozy Coupe special is that this iconic toy is made in the USA!

When the kids were toddlers, we usually had to help them "ride" in the car because they could not quite grasp the concept of using their feet to make it move along. As they got older, they enjoyed propelling the coupe around our large garage on their own steam. As the grandchild population grew, the older children enjoyed pushing the younger ones (see the images below!) on our cul-de-sac in the spring and summer. Did I mention that the Cozy Coupe is an ideal outdoor toy? Grandpa and I just need to be vigilant as we do live in a hilly neighborhood. A Cozy Coupe has no brakes and our grandkids feet are not accustomed to stopping a coupe like Fred Flintstone did in the cartoon!

Yes, the kids have more current toy cars to ride at their own homes, but this classic coupe of ours is a perennial favorite.

Important Toy Notes:

This ride-on toy is appropriate for toddlers and pre-school age children.

Vintage Cozy Coupe on eBay - perhaps you can find a Coupe like mine!

According to my research and observation, the vintage Cozy Coupe I have is larger than the new ones that are being made today. If that is what you want, then perhaps eBay might have one for sale. Just remember that the older, used models of the coupe might not have all the safety features that are built into the new models.

The steering wheel on my Cozy Coupe does not actually turn the front wheels, either. The direction that the car goes in come from the feet of the driver. That can be a difficult concept for young toddlers to understand.

If there are no auctions showing below on the day of your visit, please come back and check later.

Cozy Coupe Trivia: - a few historical notes about this iconic toy car

Who really knows why this toy car that looks like a cross between a VW beetle and Fred Flintstone's vehicle out sold the the Ford Taurus and the Honda Accord in 1998? Perhaps you can make a guess when you sign my guestbook at the bottom of this page.

For more trivia about this popular ride-on toy, read on.

  1. The Cozy Coupe was first sold in 1979.
  2. The design for this red and yellow toy car was actually created by Jim Mariot who worked for Chrysler at one time during his career.
  3. Little Tikes is based in Hudson, Ohio USA. The Cozy Coupe was first produced in Macedonia, Ohio, 12 miles away.
  4. In 2009, the Cozy Coupe was added to the collection of Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum located in Cleveland, Ohio. One of the reasons the museum added the Cozy Coupe? In 2008 it outsold all automobiles in the US!

Modern Cozy Coupe Ride-on toys for the children in your life: - A great out-door toy for the summertime!

The Cozy Coupe I have in my home is over 10 years old and is probably considered "vintage". My husband and grandchildren decorated our coupe with stickers. For the girls, we found some Disney Princesses; for the boys we used his race car decals that are on his own vehicles. Some duck tape in bright colors also found a home on the surface of this tiny car.

The current Little Tikes Cozy Coupes come in all colors and designs to match your child's interests or gender. You will not go wrong in making a purchase of this highly rated toy ride in car.

Remember, this classic toy is so patriotic because it is made in the USA!

Good Reviews for the American Made Cozy Coupe: - Other parents and professionals sound out for this ride on toy!

You don't have to take my word for the desirability of this toy. Below you will find reviews found on Amazon and other websites that give favorable statements for the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe.

I believe that the Cozy Coupe I own is ideal for children who are toddlers (around 18 months) to age 4 years, depending on their size. Of course, older children love to supervise the younger ones who can fit inside of this iconic toy car.

  • From The Oppenheimer Toy Portfolio: We love that the front wheels really turn so that kids can steer in any direction.
  • Says Amazon user avidreader, "No music, noise, batteries needed, etc. So many of the other toys out there nowadays are just sensory overload with all the bells and whistles and music and lights. It's nice to have a change of pace where your child has to use his imagination to play."
  • From besttoysguide that lists the Cozy Coupe as an "Editor's Pick": "They [The Little Tikes Ride-ons} are made of very thick, durable plastic and are rugged enough to withstand years of use and exposure to the elements."

Vintage board book about the Cozy Coupe: - Little Tikes All Around the Town

Little ones love books, or a least my little ones do. If a book is about a favorite toy, it can be the favorite on the book shelf.

It is said that the reason the Cozy Coupe is so popular is because children love doing anything that their Mom and Dad do--like driving a car!

Visit the Amazon website to see this classic, out of print, vintage board book. With any luck, there will be one in stock.

Accessories for the new Cozy Coupes: - All made in the USA!

My 3 1/2 year old granddaughter discovered the "gas cap" on our coupe and delights in pretending to pump gas into her car so she can go to the store. She uses the air compressor nozzle (which is turned off, of course) to pump the "fuel". She thought of this all by herself. My grands are all "gifted" with vivid imaginations.

When I saw the pumping station on Amazon while doing research for this page, I was delighted. Just might get one of those accessories for the coupe next Christmas!

Resources for reviewing the Cozy Coupe

Parents and grandparents alike are welcome to share your opinions about the cozy coupe by Little Tikes. I must make one recommendation for readers, make sure that the children are at play on a relatively flat area. Little ones will find it difficult to stop a Cozy Coupe going down a hill. Supervision of children on any riding toy is preferred when they are too young to control it with out assistance.

Remember to do your research when searching for a toy for your family. You are, ultimately, the one responsible for their safety.

Thanks for visiting!
