The Ultimate Guide to Wizard Builds in Diablo3
Here at our office, we all play Diablo. We could have easily covered all the classes with our current characters, except we have a 50% wizards / 50% rest of the classes ratio. That's how badass wizards are.
Now, you probably know how tough it can be to build the best wizard in Diablo 3. The number of variables and options may seem daunting, and finding a build that suits your playstyle well can be very hard. What I'm going to share with you here is what we have found to be the best wizard builds to date. I'll also describe their related playstyles and stat recommendations. Alright so here we go...
Best Wizard Build in Hell and Inferno : Magic & Destruction
Required level : 60

Seeing a lot of chatter of builds people are talking about for normal and nightmare. Both those difficulties were pretty much cake walk. This has been my build since hitting 51 and soloing in hell. also played it a bit with a monk.since he can vortex the mobs all in/trap them in a tight choke. I'm sitting at 18052 DPS on character sheet. with 1342 int. The group I run with is monk WD and Demon Hunter. We just got into Inferno and finished up King Leo. One thing I love about this class is Archon. It just shuts down groups of mobs and is extremely useful for burning down elite packs when you need to burst things down before you get overwhelmed by the rest of the pack. I don't ever use Diamond skin as much as I like it. Mainly because in later difficulties elite packs just tear thru it. So I just go pure offensive and try to take out as many as possible before dying.
Best Defensive Wizard Build : The Immortal Phoenix
Required level : 30

Many builds are all about splitting hair regarding a ranged Wizard. Some even claim to be tankish (generally at a loss of damage even if some egos don't want to admit it). The Eternal phoenix is a very simple yet solid build that gets the job done. To give you an example, in a 4 player game the other night, I ran solo into a group of 45 mobs in Act III. They were all dead in under 3 seconds and I took zero damage. I also carry a shield and have yet to die, and I think I have used maybe 10 pots in the life of my character. Rotation is simple. All cooldowns are very short, so spam all abilities freely. Preload Explosive Blast as you run headlong into group. Frost Nova, spam 2 Arcane Orbs. if « anything » is left standing. Use diamond Skin and Spectral Blades until Diamond Skin is about to wear off. Load Explosive Blast, when Diamond Skin wears off. Frost Nova, spam 2 Arcane Orbs. If « anything » is still living, run away for about half a second until Diamond Skin is back off cooldown. Rinse and repeat.
Best Offensive Wizard Build : The DPS Emperor
Required level : 60
Check out the DPS Emperor here
The damage output with this build is huge. It can literally kill monsters in a few seconds. .Wizards are the best DPS class in diablo 3. I kill faster than anyone else. They don't think it be like it is, but it does The build starts off with Desintegrate, enhanced by the Volatility. This is your main spammable skill, Thanks to the unrelenting storm and meteor attached. Blizzard and Meteor, are the core force skills of the build. If you add Slow Time, Blizzard, Meteor and Arcane Torrent will totally wreck scores of monsters that struggle to get out of your Slow Time dome. The passive Glass Cannon further increases your damage by 20%. Evocation reduces cooldowns by the same percent and Astral Presence ensures that you have enough Arcane Power to use the skill rotation strategy properly end effectively.Fun times!
Best Wizard Build for levels 45+: The Ruthless Beast
Required level : 45
Check out the Ruthless Beast here
Once you reach level 45+, the best general build is gonna be some variation of this one. I've played in public games with a few wizards and find they start using the same skills that I have after a while. Electrocute is the best sig spell, almost undoubtedly. use it to mow down little guys and with prodigy you will regen very fast to start using the big spells. Orb is seriously the best spell right now, no question. with the reduced cost it becomes very spammable. Perfect for most situations and easy to use. Ray of Frost is your single target boss and champion killer, its not quite as impressive without the frost passive or sparkflint/magic weapon buffs, but it'll do Diamond skin is a perfect oh « S**t! » button, and remember it doesn't interrupt your spells! if you're channeling ray but the guy's in your face and you want to push the dmg, you pop this and keep channeling uninterrupted. Teleport is great use with w/e rune you wish. Round it out with a last defensive spell and you're golden!
Best Wizard Build in Normal and Nightmare: Next Level Fusion
Required level : 39
Check out Next Level Fusion here http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#UiXmSj!bYX!abZaZa
This is my favorite build in Normal and Nightmare (ex aequo with The DPS Emperor, depending on my progression). Alternate between diamond skin and potions so I always have a means to survive. If you get a big pack of champions attacking, use diamond skin when I'm dying, attack some more, switch to Archon and melee attack plus explosive blast, use a potion here if a need to. By the time Archon wears off I can usually diamond skin again right away. Normally, you can just pound a champion group into the ground with Archon. The reason I sometimes also use the melee attack is because when the minions die or the champions die, they drop health globes that help keep me alive as I pick them up right away. I've killed packs by myself in full and almost full games in nightmare.
So that's it guys. I hope you liked it.
Keep in mind that Trial & Error is the best way to find what works for you. Don't theory-craft builds. Try them and see if they work for you.
I'll update this guide with new builds and improved versions of existing builds, based on our new findings and our readers' feedback, So check back often, and let us know what builds you're using in the comments !
