Toys and More

First toys should be bright, colorful and stimulating. Toys are not simply for entertainment. They also have an important role in the development of the senses, co-ordination and motor skills. Toys also help children to learn about their environment, their society, and their place in this exciting, wider world.

Bright, Attractive Dragonfly Toys

Dragonflies are very exciting and dynamic insects. They hover and dart around us like tiny airplanes. Dragonflies are not scary. They actually are helpful in the garden, eating small pest insects like mosquitos. Being quite large, bright and very colorful, they are easily spotted, so it is not surprising that young children are fascinated by dragonflies and their flight.

They have also been an inspiration to toy makers. There are many colorful toys available, perfect for a toddler or preschooler, aged 2 to 4 years. Little boys and girls will be delighted with these cheerful, fun toys. I have to say that the puppets are my favorites - colorful and inspirational for the little story lover in your life.

Dragonfly Glove Puppet

This cool glove puppet will inspire imagination, pretend play and story-telling. Children can use these finely crafted puppets to put on their own puppet shows. puppet play also enhances fine motor skills. The dragonfly will fit children's hands, but can stretch enough to allow adults to take part in play too.

There are many different types of animal in this puppet range:

  • Other insects, such as a ladybug
  • Birds, such as a rooster or a flamingo
  • Wild animals, such as a tiger or a crocodile
  • Farm animals, such as the pig
  • And many more

When the heat of the summer

Made drowsy the land,

A dragon-fly came

And sat on my hand;

Did you know?

Dragonflies are important miniature predators. They eat small insects like mosquitoes, flies, ants and wasps. You can find them near water such as marshes, ponds and streams. Their nymphs (larvae) are aquatic.

Make Your Own Toys

If you like, we could say "crafting for the very young". Children love to make and color things. With just a little imagination, we can encourage children to make their own toys and entertainment. This video shows how easy it is to make a dragonfly toy using a clothespeg and pipe cleaners. Why not make several, in different colors...

A very simple papercraft dragonfly can be made from 3 pieces of coloured card or paper. Each should measure 1 inch by 4 inches. One piece forms the body, the other two pieces form the pairs of wings. You can simply draw the eyes, but make them big!

Older children enjoy the challenge of making more intricate paper craft and origami dragonflies.

Zooming around the House with your own Dragonfly

Small children like a story-line, and we all know that travel opens up exciting possibilities. Drusilla Dragonfly, with assistance from a child, can fly to various destinations in the house and garden either alone or carrying a groovy girls fairy doll on her back. Children love the idea of flying their dolls from room to room on this lovely plush creature. It is pink and purple, and mainly soft with the exception of a firmer seat. Drusilla is well made with loops to keep a doll in place.

An equally cute alternative is Daisy, the wind-up dragonfly. Cute and colorful, with dreamy eyes. Wind her up and watch her rush around the floor.
