Fantastic Hand Puppets and Great Kids Party Ideas
I am a qualified teacher of drama and theatre arts, and I love to plan birthday parties for my son. When he was little I used to invite his whole class to wonderful themed parties –we had such fun!
My husband and family worked with me but I also used hand puppets to help me along. They are a great idea because children love them.
This Red Dragon Enchanted Puppet really went down well in a Knights and Princess themed party. The special guest was Fiamma, which means Flame in Italian, the red dragon!
This was my son’s 6th birthday party, and the year before we had a wonderful pirate’s party, which was such a success that I was worried that it would be hard to follow.
I needed something to make this year’s party really enjoyable. So, what better for a Knights and Princess party than a dragon!
But Fiamma wasn’t easy to find because I was looking for well made quality hand puppets. I wanted to keep it for a long time to come. Puppets are very good things to help children to come to terms with difficulties they may encounter, for example they can be used to role play problems children may be having at school, to help find solutions and ways forward. I wanted one that my son would be able to keep as he grew up. So I kept looking.
I did well to do so because I found an Enchanted Dragon Puppet, by The Puppet Company. These are beautifully made, well designed, and made to last. The gold trimmings and detail on Fiamma are amazing. Also, and this is very important, they are very easy to manoeuvre and have a fully functioning mouth. Perfect, and bright red too!
A Party Idea: Knights and Princesses
We were entertaining about 30 children in a large hall. Everyone was dressed up, and my mother was the Queen and my husband the King. We reconstructed a medieval village, with areas for jousting and a village green for example. That was easy to do, we just wrote words like ‘Village Green’ or ‘Castle’ on very large pieces of paper and taped them to the wall in different areas of the hall.
We also had a dragon’s den!
We sang songs and jousted on space hoppers using blow up swords as jousting sticks. The kids were delighted to bounce up and down along strips of tape we stuck to the floor and that represented a jousting run, and had fun hitting each other with their swords as they passed by in the opposite direction. A very simple, but very effective game!
We played lots of group games and ate at a wonderful banquet. Dragon flavored Pizza and a special castle shaped cake complete with it’s own dragon.
We had so much fun! If you would like more information about the things we did please leave a comment in the box below.
But the magical moment was when Fiamma came out of her den. We’d kept her hidden, and because the children read the words “Dragon’s Den’ on the wall, they were expecting to meet a dragon and were very, very excited!
I spent a few moments building Fiamma’s character for them, and told them that she was very shy, and that she would need gentle persuasion to come out of her den. So the children called her name and cajoled until she eventually appeared. The response was amazing and they loved her at first sight!
It was the first time I’d ever worked with a puppet in front of such an enthusiastic crowd, and I wasn’t very good at it. I didn’t even attempt to talk without moving my lips! But that didn’t matter because they were transfixed by this beautiful dragon hand puppet. The trick was to make a strong character for her and make her talk directly to the kids. As it turned out she wasn’t shy at all, she was cocky and really quite a rude character, and she kept biting her own tail!
The wonderful thing is that Fiamma is still a real dragon in our house even though my son is 13 now. She usually comes out when he is unwell or feeling sad, and she still wreaks havoc! Her character has developed so well over the years that she really is a believable part of the family, she has grown up with my son, and, unlike him, she is not at all well behaved!
Hand puppets are an amazing toy for children of any age and will bring your kids party ideas to life. We have several now, but Fiamma is the boss!
