Fire Pit Friday!
Here's a great way to build family memories!
This summer, I've declared a new weekly holiday. It's Fire pit Friday! Every week, our family builds a campfire in the backyard in our fire pit and we spend time with each other. As a busy, homeschooling mom of seven great kids, I don't have a lot of extra money for all kinds of summer vacations or day trips. But I want to build memories and spend time with my family. Enter our fire pit. We love to camp, but camping is a lot of work. One of the best things about camping is sitting around the campfire, making s'mores and watching the flames light up the dark night. Now we don't have to wait to go camping to make that campfire, we just wander out to the backyard, and light a fire!
It's Friday Night!
We love spending time together around the fire pit! How can you get seven siblings to sit and get along? Make a campfire. Gather camp chairs and arrange them in a circle. Make dinner over the campfire. Get the kids involved! You can cook all sorts of things on a stick--hot dogs, crescent rolls, marshmallow and more. Or you can use a pie iron to make sandwiches. Sometimes, we just roast S'mores for dessert. Who can go wrong with chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows? Anytime is a great time to gather your family and friends and create memories. Invite your neighbors over to share in the fun!
Get a fire pit for your own backyard - And you can celebrate Fire pit Friday every week too!

Dinner's almost ready! - Making memories cooking hotdogs over the campfire
Hot dogs just taste better when they are cooked over the open flame! In fact, everything tastes better when it is cooked over the open flame. My kids love to have dinner Friday nights over the fire. We set up our camp chairs and collect the rolls and condiments and we are set! We set up a small portable table to hold our supplies, and get a grill stick for everyone. Sometimes, we even set up the tent in the backyard and spend the night outside after our fire dies down. Instant (and almost free) fun!

There's nothing like toasted marshmallows - Unless of course, you use them to make s'mores!
This girl has mastered the art of toasting marshmallows. And she will remember the good times spent with her family forever! The kids try to outdo each other toasting the best marshmallow. I never have to toast my own, because one of the kids always wants to do mine for me. The big kids help the little kids and they build their relationships. Of course, one more thing is needed for our celebration. Can you guess what it is? A camera. Take pictures so you can share your memories when the kids grow up!
S'mores are the perfect accompaniment to any campfire! They are so easy to make.
- Prep time: 2 min
- Cook time: 3 min
- Ready in: 5 min
- Yields: the whole crew
- graham crackers
- chocolate bars
- Toast a marshmallow (or two) over the campfire. You can toast it a little or a lot. Break one whole graham cracker in half. Put a mini chocolate bar on one half of the graham cracker, then put the toasted marshmallow on top and top it off with the other graham cracker half. Eat while hot! Yum. For a fun alternative, use a Reese's peanut butter cup in place of the chocolate bar.
