Folding Bike Kuala Lumpur | Where to Buy a Folding Bike in Kuala Lumpur

Updated on August 24, 2012

Folding Bike Kuala Lumpur | A review on Getting a Folding Bike for Yourself

Folding Bike Kuala Lumpur is a Squidoo lens specially written for those of you who have been checking around for some information on folding bicycle or folding bikes in and around Kuala Lumpur. You may have typed in Folding Bike Kuala Lumpur in Google, Yahoo, Bing or some other search engine and arrived here.

So welcome to this lens. I hope you will find it interesting and useful. This is not necessarily only for those of you in Kuala Lumpur. This may even be useful for those of you in Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, USJ, Puchong and many other towns near Kuala Lumpur.

If you are suddenly getting all interested in this type of bicycles you are not alone. Folding bikes fans in Malaysia are growing and getting bigger by the day. The appeal may be that they not only look good but they are also easily stored and transported. Some cyclists may be getting tired of their road bikes and mountain bikes with all their bells and whistles and want something simple and convenient to travel around.

With a folding bike there is nothing the cyclist need to prove - neither in speed, nor performance. It is more for laid back cycling, to take in the sights as you travel and enjoy the experience.

I have found out that the price of folding bikes can vary from a few hundred ringgit to a few thousand ringgit. It is really your decision on how much you would like to spend your ringgit, but having looked around for a suitable folding bike, I have found a make which is not only good but reasonably price.

So, please read through this lens. Hopefully you will one day get your own folding bike. With it you will get out more and have a healthier lifestyle adopting cycling as your preferred fitness activity.

Folding Bike Kuala Lumpur | Why It's Popular

Unlike a normal bicycle, a folding bike is one that can be unscrewed and folded into a more compact size. The design allows you to fold your bike after you have used it and to be able to transport it wherever you choose while it is in it's compact form.

These bikes are so convenient for travelling especially if you are going onto public transportation. Even if you drive a car, the folded bike can be stored in the car boot or with the rear seats folded, it can be stored together with the other things you will be bringing on your holiday or outdoor activity. Being able to be folded, it also helps with storage at home, allowing you to put it away in in smaller areas. This is great if you live in a condominium or an apartment as it helps you conserve space by throwing you bicycle in the storeroom, underneath the stairwell even at the back of your kitchen making your home look tidier with no unsightly bikes leaned against a wall somewhere.

The folding bikes are very popular in cities where cars are impractical, expensive, or where traffic is too busy to permit them, look at New York City, Beijing, Tokyo, or other major urban metropolises. I hope Kuala Lumpur and other major cities in Malaysia will catch on where people would use their bike for trips instead of grabbing their car keys for these short trips.

Why People Love Folding Bikes

People just love folding bikes because

1. Convenience - They are simple bikes suited to take the rider around.

2. Easy to store - put them under the stairwell, next to your closet, underneath the study table, etc.

3. Easy to transport - don't need expensive roof racks, can be taken onto buses and trains.

4. Looks cool - their good design makes them an excellent head turner

A Recommended Make of a Folding Bike

In Malaysia you will find several makes which have been brought in by bike distributors. If you look around some bigger bike shops you will find brands like Dahon, Polygon and Tern.

Then there are some very good quality ones from USA and Japan such as Ralliart, MINI, Hummer, Doppelgänger and Montague. Brompton is a famous make from the UK.

I find the manufacturers had taken a lot of initiative to build folding bikes which are beautifully designed. Besides that they are also functional. Only the best frames are used from materials such as aluminium or hi-ten steel.

As for components, most would use Shimano. This adds to the rideability of these folding bikes. Putting them into a class of their own.
