Updated on September 25, 2014

Dark Souls - An Action RPG

Dark Souls is an action, role-playing game developed by From Software. Since its release, Dark Souls has garnered critical acclaim for its gameplay and difficulty.

RPG enthusiasts marveled at how successful the game is at revving up the players' sense of adventure. Casual gamers may find it particularly difficult to progress through the game because Dark Souls is not your ordinary action RPG. Careful decision making is crucial in your venture in the dark fantasy world. You can't simply hack and slash monsters left and right, or fight bosses head on with reckless abandon. Death in this game means you will lose all you have gathered throughout your journey. You have the opportunity to reclaim these things but it wouldn't be easy. This aspect of the game is what thrilled hardcore gamers and drove away those who just want to play a simple and easy game.

Are you one of those who enjoyed the difficult challenges Dark Souls offers? If yes, then here are games like Dark Souls which will provide you with tons of action and adventure.

Demon's Souls

Closest game like Dark Souls

Demon's Souls is an action RPG also developed by From Software. Dark Souls is considered as the spiritual successor to this amazing game, and this is the closest thing you can find when looking for a game similar to Dark Souls so let's get this out of the way first. Demon's Souls was released in North America in October 2009 and developed exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

The game is set in the fictional Kingdom of Boletaria and you control a hero who battles demons that feast on the souls of mortals. At the start of the game, you can customize your character's gender, appearance and class. There are 10 starting classes to choose from, each with different starting stats, equipment and type of magic. You gain souls by killing enemies, and these can be used to buy, repair or upgrade your weapons or to increase your character's stats. Upon dying, though, you lose your unused souls and you are taken back to the beginning of the level with all non-boss enemies respawned. If you are able to reach the location of your death, you can retrieve your lost souls. However, if you get killed prior to reaching your desired location, you lose your unused souls permanently.

The developers of Demon's Souls put great emphasis on making the game very challenging and they added the feature of increasing its difficulty by 40% upon completing the game for the first time. This game has tremendous replay value and hardcore gamers are going to have to spend a lot of time trying to finish this game.

In this game, you take the role of Geralt of Rivia, one of the few remaining witchers. Witchers are genetically enhanced humans that have been trained to battle monsters from a young age. The Witcher 2 features a revamped combat system. As in many other action games, you can deal quick but less-damaging attacks, or deal more lethal blows at the cost of speed. You can also lay traps and use ranged weapons to attack your enemies from a distance. New weapons and armors have also been added, aiding Geralt throughout his quest. You can also enter stealth mode in certain areas of the game, where you try to reach your objective while remaining undetected by enemies.

An action role-playing game like Dark Souls

Dragon's Dogma is developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 under the action role-playing genre. If you are looking for a game with an open world with hack and slash and survival horror elements, then this is the perfect game for you.

You can also select from a variety of vocations, usually referred to as classes in other games. These vocations include: Fighter, Warrior, Mystic Knight, Strider, Ranger, Assassin, Mage, Sorcerer and Magic Archer. Dragon's Dogma features an innovative pawn system. Pawns are your party members, and they can talk with your character to ask for help or provide information about certain monsters. You can also issue commands to them such as Go, Help, and Come. The pawns are extremely helpful in battling tough bosses, so make sure you listen to whatever they are yelling at you. The game also features a very cool grab action, where you have the ability to grab or cling to enemies. This means you just don't whack at the shins of huge boss monsters. You can climb up to reach its head and beat it to a pulp.

Each class starts on a different map, has different weapons and skills, and has different sets of combos. They all eventually go along the same route, and their ultimate goal is to obtain Ianna's Sword, slain the evil Necromancer Dal Gurak, and descend into the Abyss to put an end to the Chaos Child. Just like in other RPGs, you can experience points as you progress through the game, enabling you to gain special attacks and abilities to expand your combos.
