My Top 3 Games Like Dungeon Keeper - How My Love For Gaming Started

Updated on December 27, 2015

My Favourite 3 Games Like Dungeon Keeper

Looking for some games like Dungeon Keeper (DK)? Find my favourite 3 games like the Dungeon Keeper series here.

The Dungeon Keeper series has always been my all time favourite game series. It was also the first video game I ever played and since then I have installed the games more times than I can count.

Dungeon Keeper has kept me staying up late more than any other video game with its mixture of strategy, dungeon management and unique dark humour.

My hunt for games like Dungeon Keeper has spanned over 15 years and in the end I have only found 3 games worthy of the title.

I hope that other fans of the Dungeon Keeper series looking for games like Dungeon Keeper will find this page helpful. If you are yet to play either of the Dungeon Keeper games I recommend purchasing them from Good Old Games to solve any compatibility issues.

A New Free Dungeon Keeper Like Game - Undermaster

Undermaster is a new browser based game that has Dungeon Keeper style elements that I've been enjoying for the past few months.

It sort of combines the feel and vibe of Dungeon Keeper with browser strategy games and the result is fairly good for a game in beta.

In just the few months I have been playing the game I have already seen many improvements and I expect these to continue in the future. If you want something casual that lets you design and build your own dungeon for free I recommend giving an Undermaster a try.

15 Years Ago Dungeon Keeper Started My Love For Gaming.

My Love For The Dungeon Keeper Series

My Dungeon Keeper Story

Every gamer has that game that started their passion for video games and for me it is the Dungeon Keeper series. Dungeon Keeper was the first video game I ever played and since then my love for video games has grown into my number one hobby and passion.

The first time I played the game was at my uncle's house and while I was too young at the time to pick up on some of the dark humour I was hooked on the gameplay.

Eventually when my family finally had our own computer system I begged my uncle to install the Dungeon Keeper games on the computer and I haven't looked back since.

Even what seems like hundreds of re-installs later the game is just as fun as that first playthrough over 15 years ago.

Games Like Dungeon Keeper

My Personal Picks

1 - Evil Genius

Play As An Evil Genius In This Game Like Dungeon Keeper

The first game on my list of favourite games like Dungeon Keeper is the popular Evil Genius game which was released back in 2004.

The game has very similar gameplay to the Dungeon Keeper series and Theme Hospital (another of Bullfrog's strategy games). The game has players building their own lair while attempting to achieve world domination.

Players play as an evil genius and must construct their own evil lair while they oversee world domination from behind the scenes. Your evil doings will attract a wide variety of government agencies though so your lair will have to be protected with security systems and traps.

To reach your ultimate goal of world domination you'll have to complete missions and steal from around the world to create your super weapon.

I found Evil Genius to be one of my favourite games like Dungeon Keeper because of its management and base building style of gameplay. The sarcastic and dark style of humour is also present in Evil Genius.

Both of these things remind me a lot of what I loved about the Dungeon Keeper series which is why I consider it my favourite game like Dungeon Keeper.

Evil Genius - Good Old Games

Play as an evil villain and create the perfect island fortress to keep the pesky secret agents out of your evil business. Hire minions and recruit henchman to aid you in your quest for world domination. You'll quickly see why I consider this game to the best game like Dungeon Keeper available with its management and base building gameplay that is very similar to the Dungeon Keeper series.

2 - A Game of Dwarves

A Game That Offers A Dungeon Keeper Like Experience

A Game of Dwarves is one of the newer attempts to create a game like Dungeon Keeper and while some gamers were disappointed with what it had to offer I felt it definitely captured the Dungeon Keeper style of gameplay.

A Game of Dwarves combines Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress to create a fun strategy orientated game.

The game puts you in the role of a dwarf price who is tasked with reclaiming your people's land. A Game of Dwarves is also packed with mysteries and treasures that reward exploration of each game level (something that I always loved about Dungeon Keeper).

The game also borrows some gameplay aspects from Minecraft with its emphasis on digging and resource collection. A Game of Dwarves uniquely offers the ability to dig down rather than just having one level like the Dungeon Keeper games.

A Game of Dwarves also has a number of downloadable content add-ons to enhance the base gameplay.

While some Dungeon Keeper fans were disappointed I loved every minute of my time with the game and feel it is very worthy of inclusion on my list.

Recruit dwarves, train them in a profession, dig, explore and unlock the mysteries of the game world. If you are a fan of Dungeon Keeper or Dwarf Fortress you'll feel right at home with what a Game of Dwarves has to offer.

3 - War For The Overworld

An Upcoming Game Like Dungeon Keeper

War For The Overworld is being called Dungeon Keeper 3 by many fans of the series and is due for release in late 2013. The game already has a basic demo available with a beta phase to start in April (for those who pledge to the game).

I've already had some hands on time with this game and already pledged a sizeable amount to its creation and look forward to getting my hands on the War For The Overworld beta in the coming month.

Due to the long time until release date many things are up for discussion about the eventual direction that War For The Overworld will take but it is very easy to see the strong Dungeon Keeper influence already.

Players will create their own dungeon, attract a variety of creatures to populate it and then defend it against the invading heroes.

For more game information, to pledge some money towards game development or find game related news stop by the official website and forums linked below.

Thanks for reading my page, by the time you've read it from start to finish I'm sure I've already re-installed one (if not both) of the Dungeon Keeper games. Feel free to leave your feedback and comments below (note that they must be approved before being visible).

I've never played the Dungeon Keeper games. My favorite computer games are the Myst games and Worms2 (quite a contrast, I know). I like the look of A Game of Dwarves, though -- might try it in future!

I'm not much of a game player, but I can imagine that people can get hooked to them. Looks good.
