7 Games Like Fable - Popular Action RPGs

Updated on January 5, 2016

7 Games Like Fable - Popular Action RPGs

Are you looking for a game like Fable? There are plenty of great action role-playing games like Fable available across many platforms including PC, Xbox and PlayStation.

The Fable game series started back in 2004 and is often considered to be one of the stars in the action RPG genre.

The games also combine a number of open world elements to create massive game worlds for players to explore. Fable II and Fable III added co-operative gameplay into the mix which proved very successful.

I really enjoyed the Fable series but finding games that offered a similar experience proved difficult so I did some research and decided to put this page together. Share your favourite game like Fable in the comment section or let me know about a game like Fable that I might have missed.

7 Games Like Fable

Action RPGs

1 - Age of Conan

A MMO RPG With Deep Story And Options

The Age of Conan MMO has been highly praised by critics and offers a great RPG like experience but with a free price tag. If you are seeking something with vast quests and strong combat it is easily one of the most compelling options on this page.

The game is played from a mostly third person perspective and follows your customised warrior as they explore, battle and quest through some extremely impressive landscapes. There is plenty of story to this world which gives your adventure plenty of context.

Age of Conan has been praised for its compelling story, AI, side-missions, customisation options, decision trees and even the writing within the game. If you are looking for a game like Fable with a MMO twist then Age of Conan is a great option.

2 - Dragon Age (Series)

One Of The Most Popular Games Like Fable

Dragon Age is a game series similar to the Fable series and is a great place to start if you are after a game like Fable. Dragon Age: Origins was released in 2009 with its sequel (Dragon Age 2) being released in 2011.

Dragon Age has a dark fantasy setting and has many unique role-playing elements that fans of Fable will enjoy. The game offers players three characters (Rogue, Warrior or Mage) and also allows players to select their gender.

Like most action RPGs Dragon Age offers a great storyline and characters you'll quickly become attached to. Dragon Age offers large amounts of customisation and offers nearly endless hours of gameplay (to complete everything). Combat varies between console and PC with console being more action focused while PC allowing more strategic battle choices.

I strongly recommend trying out Dragon Age: Origins before purchasing Dragon Age 2, not only did it rank better (91 to 82 via Metacritic) but it will also help connect characters and the game world together.

3 - Two Worlds II

An Action Role-Playing-Game Like Fable

Two Worlds II is an action RPG developed by a Polish video game developer known as Reality Pimp. The game is a sequel to Two Worlds (2007) and was released in 2011. The game was a hit selling over 1 million units within its first few weeks of release.

Two Worlds II is a role playing game like Fable that features a fantasy world which players can explore in a non linear fashion. Two Worlds offers great customisation of your character through body, face and skin (like most modern RPGs).

Like other RPGs players will level up as they complete quests, explore the world and defeat enemies. As the game world is mostly open players are free to explore all game areas from the start but can use monster levels to guide them along appropriate paths.

A unique aspect of Two Worlds is that players are not required to choose a specific character class. Players instead build their character by spending stat points to push them towards one archetype over another (and unlocking skills in the process).

Two Worlds 2: Epic Edition (GOG)

Two Worlds 2 is the perfect game like Fable across a number of platforms. The game includes a variety of exploration methods along with a popular and smooth flowing combat system which is vital in an action RPG environment and reminded me of the Fable series. The game also has a great co-op system so if you can convince a friend to grab a copy as well you'll definitely have a great experience. I always felt like Two Worlds 2 didn't receive as much praise as it should have (it scored in the mid 70s). Something about the game had a Fable feel to it and just pulled me in as I played longer and longer. If you have the option to play the game on PC I strongly recommend it as this is definitely the platform that the game shined on.

4 - The Witcher (Series)

A Popular Series Of Games Like Fable

The Witcher is a video game series based on a book series by a Polish author.

The game is set in a medieval fantasy land and follows the story of the Witchers. These Witchers are powerful monster hunters who are gifted with incredible powers.

Not only does the game offer intense combat and an interesting main storyline it also offers various moral choices, although unlike other games all moral decisions fall heavily in a grey area.

The original Witcher game scored 81 on Metacritc with the sequel receiving countless praise from critics and scoring a 88. The game's stories are mostly independent so you can start with the second game if you wish.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt (GOG)

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

The second instalment of The Witcher series has many game improvements and tweaks to make it a great experience. While the storylines are similar players are not required to play the first game. As such I recommend starting with the second game in the series. Available for Xbox 360 and the PC (I played the PC version) I quickly got hooked on the game world on offer from The Witcher game series and I believe you'll love it as well. I found the original had a few nagging issues to prevent it from the scores it could have received (it scored 81 on Metacritic) but the sequel addressed these issues and managed to get a well deserved score of 88.

5 - Skyrim

A Very Successful Open World Game Like Fable

Skyrim is the latest addition to the Elders Scrolls game series and has been highly rated by critics for its amazing open world and extensive lore. Skyrim shipped over 7 million game copies within the first week of its release.

The main storyline follows the Dragonborn (the player) who is capable of absorbing dragon souls and saving the world from Alduin (a dragon god). Skyrim features one of the largest game worlds ever before seen and allows players to freely explore and discover its secrets.

Combat in Skyrim falls under three main categories (ranged, melee and magic) which players can train and level up independently on their character. Other skills that players can train include locking picking, sneaking, alteration and alchemy. This allows players to train their character in many different ways, offering great customisation.

The biggest unique feature of Skyrim is the Dragon shouts that the players learn by exploring dungeons and ruins, which can only be activated by slaying a Dragon (and absorbing its soul).

Skyrim is one of great RPGs and will appeal to RPG veterans and fans of the Fable series.

Skyrim is available on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Skyrim has been praised by critics and loved by gamers (including myself). After only a few hours with the game you will instantly see why with the variety of paths and options available in this game world which will quickly have you hooked. If you are looking for a game with hundreds (maybe even thousands) of hours in gameplay potential nothing beats Skyrim. I can't speak highly enough of the game and how much I enjoyed my time with it. It's probably the closest game I've found to the Fable series. If you love a game that feels like its own world, want some customisation and near endless exploration Skyrim is your game.

6 - Lord of the Rings: War in the North

A Lord Of The Rings Inspired Game Like Fable

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is an RPG that follows the events in the northern areas of Middle-Earth. The game is designed to fluidly swap between playing with friends and solo making it a great game like Fable for you and a friend.

You can choose from 3 different heroes (a human ranger, a dwarf or an elf mage) to play and follow their journey to help the war effort and indirectly help the Fellowship of the Ring. Each character has ranged and melee attacks along with upgradeable skills and unique abilities.

After finishing the game a special (and extremely hard) nightmare mode is unlocked.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North is another action packed game like Fable for multiple platforms (PC, PS3 and Xbox 360). The game will particularly appeal to fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise and draws heavy inspiration from the LOTR world. The game features 3 playable races and even co-op functionality which is always a favourite feature of mine for games that I play.

7 - Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas

A Post Apocalyptic Game Like Fable

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are the latest additions to the Fallout franchise. These games both offer a great FPS open world RPG experience that fans of the Fable game series will enjoy.

The game isn't set in a fantasy setting or use medieval style magic and weapons like the Fable series but is instead set in a post apocalyptic landscape with guns and various energy weapons.

Despite the differences the game still offers a great RPG experience and a massive open world to explore along with skills (perks) and plenty of moral choices, making it a great option if you are looking for a game like Fable.

My absolute fave game is Skyrim. It holds a special place in my heart. but Fable is amazing too. I love both of them, but each in their own way. I love the crazy things you can do in Fable and all the choices but the story and that in Skyrim.

Skyrim isn't a Fable-like game. Fable is an elder Scrolls-like game. Fable is to Skyrim like Titan Quest is to Diablo. Is newer, smaller in scope and somewhat more colourful.

Fable was such an epic game! They kind of messed up 3 a bit. I didn't like how it was the same game over and over with the same enemies, quests etc. Only thing that changed was the story just slightly. Even with all that, still an amazing game. Mass Effect was fun too!

Skyrim is the only rpg I've played and I enjoy it greatly. The entire Elder Scrolls series seem really well made, though I have at times lost track of how much time I spend playing it.
