8 Games Like Fallout 3: Popular Action RPGs
Are you a Fallout fan? Looking for a collection of games like Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas? Look no further, this page features the very best games across multiple platforms.
The Fallout game series is well known for its post-apocalyptic setting, large open worlds, deep story and RPG elements. The series had me hooked since I first played the original nearly two decades ago.
With Fallout 3 and New Vegas the game series also added FPS into its gameplay. I loved this shift into FPS in the latest games, and have long hunted for games with a similar open-world FPS experience.
The games on this page are some of my favourites and are available on multiple platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3). If you know any other games like Fallout, be sure to share them in the comment section located at the bottom of this page.

1. Metro 2033
Metro 2033 is a survival first-person shooter game like Fallout which also contains some horror elements. The game is based on a novel and was released in 2010 for PC and Xbox 360 with a sequel planned for 2013.
The game focuses on missions throughout the Moscow metro system but does also occasionally send players above ground. Players will run into many threats including mutants and other hostile humans. Metro 2033 offers a variety of weapons (real and fictional) to defend yourself in this unforgiving world.
As in most post-apocalyptic games, a large portion of the player's time is spent scavenging the world and simply trying to survive while also making moral decisions on their journey (much like Fallout).
Without a doubt, Metro 2033 is one of the top three scariest games that I have ever played. This game seriously gave me the creeps. The game's post-apocalyptic environment is incredibly realistic, and the game is challenging without being cheap, which is rare from a modern FPS game. It has only light RPG elements, but I still loved the spooky FPS experience.
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series
The three-game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (STALKER) series is available on PC. The game is a mixture of survival, action, horror, first-person-shooter, and some RPG elements.
The STALKER series offers non-linear game features including side missions, random events and the ability to choose alliances. Just as in the Fallout games, players have a strong impact on the ending and the role they take in the game world.
A unique feature of STALKER is the artifacts that players encounter while exploring the game world (known as "The Zone"). These artifacts are found in dangerous anomalies and offer the player benefits from increased resistances, carry weight, health or radiation protection.
The three games in the series are Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat. A spin-off MMO called Survarium was due for release in late 2014.
One of the best aspects of the STALKER game series is watching the game world evolve and change throughout the different games as new areas become accessible and old areas are consumed by radiation. I love how Call of Pripyat, for example, refers back to and resolves loose ends from the earlier games.
3. Borderlands (Series)
Borderlands is a western space style first-person shooter with some RPG elements thrown in that make it a great game like Fallout. The original Borderlands was released in 2009 with a sequel in 2012. Both games are available for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The Borderlands games offer a great variety of different characters to choose from, each with their own weapons, unique skills and proficiencies.
After selecting your character, you embark on various quests from NPCs or bounty boards to earn money and experience points. Players can then use these experience points to level their skills and advance down their skill tree.
A unique game feature of Borderlands is its random generation of weapons, which means that a single type of gun can vary greatly from another based on accuracy, elemental effects, firepower and rate of fire.
With its multiplayer options, the Borderlands game series is one of the best games like Fallout to play with friends.
I'm a huge Diablo fan and I'm always up for some FPS gameplay, so the Borderlands series is a no-brainer choice.
Borderlands 2 is the second instalment of the Borderlands franchise. I love the loot aspect of Borderlands 2 and combined with its darker funny side I always found it hard to put it down. You might want to play the original first, to link up the story pieces, but Borderlands 2 doesn't require that, and has many improvements over the original that make it a good place to start your Borderlands experience.
Rage is an FPS game set in a post-apocalyptic world similar to that of Fallout and Borderlands. The game is set in the near future after an asteroid has collided with Earth, leaving it in ruins.
The game focuses on FPS gameplay but also has many driving elements that allow the player to race for money or travel around the wasteland quickly. Like the Fallout series, Rage offers players a single main quest line, with side missions available throughout the game.
Rage is complete with many RPG elements including customisable weapons, crafting and a looting system. While the game world is somewhat empty, in my opinion, the combat is very smooth and overall a challenging and unique combat experience.
Rage scored 81/100 on Metacritic for the console versions, with the PC version receiving 79 (due to the PC port). While the PC port was a letdown, Rage is still one of the best games like Fallout for the Xbox 360. It's also available for the PS3.
5. Bioshock (Series)
Bioshock is a horror-survival FPS game series available on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Bioshock contains plenty of role-playing elements, in addition to its strong FPS-style gameplay, and is highly popular, selling more than 10 million copies worldwide.
The game facilitates all play styles, allowing players to clear areas using stealth or to focus on an arsenal of weapons to advance through the game.
As players progress, they can upgrade their weapons and earn plasmids to gain super-human abilities including the ability to control fire and electricity.
While Bioshock's story is more linear than that of the Fallout games, there are many similarities. Bioshock is a great game with its strong gameplay, horror atmosphere and customisation options.
Bioshock Infinite takes the Bioshock series in exciting new directions.
The year is 1912 and players take control of Booker DeWitt as he attempts to save Elizabeth from the flying city of Columbia. Elizabeth is not as helpless as she would have you believe, though; she has the power to bend time and space.
6. Mass Effect (Series)
Mass Effect is a sci-fi RPG trilogy played from a third person perspective, following the adventures of Commander Shepard as he tries to save the galaxy from the mechanical race of Reapers who wish to destroy all organic life.
The Mass Effect game series features a deep story, AI-controlled squad members, side missions, mini-games, and multiple dialogue and story paths to explore.
Mass Effect has had major critical success, with critics praising its storyline, characters, voice acting, game choices and depth of gameplay.
While Fallout fans might think this game is a bit of a stretch from the Fallout series, the game is without a doubt one of the best RPG adventures currently available, and you will not be disappointed.
Mass Effect has a large focus on storyline elements so starting from the original game is a good choice.
The original is available at a low price so you can experience this great game without breaking the bank.
Skyrim is the latest addition to the Elder Scrolls series. While the game isn't based in a post-apocalyptic setting like Fallout, it does feature a massive open world.
Players will still enjoy (and be able to follow) the game without playing its predecessors. The main storyline of Skyrim follows the player's journey to defeat a dragon god prophesied to destroy the world. The player is known as the Dragonborn and has the ability to absorb the souls of Dragons in order to increase their own power.
Skyrim offers players a massive open world, a large number of skills to level up, different game paths (mage, ranged and melee fighting), countless NPCs and an in-depth world for players to explore.
Skyrim is available on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Skyrim: The Latest and Greatest Elder Scrolls Game
One of the best role-playing games of the decade. I spent hundreds of hours exploring this detailed game world packed full of NPCs, side quests and dragons! It doesn't offer the same FPS experience as Fallout, but the detailed game world is unmatched.
8. The Last Of Us
The Last Of Us is an amazing post-apocalyptic survival adventure video game that was originally revealed in December 2011 and released in June of 2013.
The game follows the journey of Ellie (a 14 -ear old girl) and Joel (a veteran of the post-apocalyptic survival world) as they travel the ruined world in an attempt to survive. The game has a deep storyline, lots of character interaction and a tough difficulty level.
In The Last of Us you will spend your time scavenging and killing others for survival in the harsh game world.
While the gameplay is different to the Fallout series, if you enjoy the feeling of surviving in a dangerous world then The Last Of Us will definitely appeal to you.
If you haven't got a PlayStation 3 I feel sorry for you because you are missing out on a simply amazing gaming experience.
I found that the game really captured the survival elements I liked in Fallout so I've included it here.
