15 Games Like Final Fantasy - Japanese RPGs

Are you looking for a collection of games like Final Fantasy? There are plenty of great Japanese RPGs available across a number of platforms for fans of the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy is a popular franchise that is centred around the fantasy role-playing games of the Final Fantasy series which began in 1987. Since then the Final Fantasy series has grown to include many games, animes, merchandise and other media.

The games like Final Fantasy on this page are split into two categories and offer a number of platforms including; Online, iOS, Mobile, Xbox, Wii, PlayStation, Nintendo DS and PC.

Let us know which game like Final Fantasy is your favourite and why in our comment section.

Lost Odyssey - Xbox 360
Lost Odyssey - Xbox 360

As far as Japanese RPGs go I enjoyed Lost Odyssey the most.

The game introduced a number of features in an attempt to innovate the genre and I found it a great change of pace in a genre that usually produces alot of junk.

Unfortunately the game is Xbox only. But if you have a Xbox start your Final Fantasy alternative search here.

The Last Story - Nintendo Wii
The Last Story - Nintendo Wii

I was hesitant to grab a RPG for my Nintendo Wii (especially when it is a Wii exclusive game) because the console is generally left untouched by the genre.

I was shocked at the quality of gameplay that The Last Story offered and how easy the controls were (one of my biggest worries). The Last Story world is amazing to explore with a great story to back it up.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

I picked up Dragon Quest IX and borrowed my brother's Nintendo DS to play the game because I wanted a casual RPG to play.

I wasn't disappointed and was actually very impressed with the game considering it was a Nintendo DS game designed for a younger audience. The large number of items was what really sealed the deal for me.

8 - Xenoblade Chronicles

A Popular Game Like Final Fantasy For The Wii

Xenoblade Chronicles is another popular Japanese RPG, the game was released in Japan in 2010 and eventually made it to the west in 2011/2012.

Xenoblade has some interesting features including a lack of potions, meaning players must rely on healing skills or heal outside of battle. 9 - Dragon Quest 9

A Game Like Final Fantasy For The Nintendo DS

Dragon Quest 9 (Sentinels of the Starry Skies) is the latest addition to the Dragon Quest game series and is one of the stand outs featuring a score of 87 on Metacritic while also receiving a perfect score from Japan's most popular gaming magazine. Players are not required to play the previous installments to play Dragon Quest 9.

Dragon Quest 9 was the first game in the series to be first released on a handheld console and features spawning enemies, turn-based combat and a levelling system like many other RPGs. Dragon Quest 9 also introduces multi-player functionality through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Don't be fooled by Dragon Quest 9, it was designed to be the hardest of all the games and will even give RPG veterans a run for their money. After you have played Dragon Quest 9 (and enjoyed it) you can look at playing the other games in the series.

The original Kingdom Hearts is always a fan favourite and is still a game that sees many replays despite its age.

Once you've played the original Kingdom Hearts you won't look back. The game is perfect for more casual gamers as well as hardcore gamers thanks to the simple gameplay that also has good depth to it.

Kingdom Hearts II - PlayStation 2

The Last Remnant is a role playing game like Final Fantasy and is one of the few Japanese RPGs to be designed with a Japanese and Western audience in mind. The Last Remnant was originally released for Xbox 360 and came to Windows the following year.

The gameplay of The Last Remnant is highly addicting and the game world is filled with interesting character stories and quests. The game is often called the best Japanese RPG for PC.

The Last Remnant is another one of the great game options like Final Fantasy for PC or Xbox users.

The game's graphics are simply breathtaking and combined with the realistic storyline you'll be quickly hooked on the game.

A Xbox 360 Game Like Final Fantasy

Infinite Undiscovery is another popular action RPG, it is published by Square Enix and is exclusive to the Xbox 360.

Infinite Undiscovery offers players a massive storyline adventure and real time combat.

Players control the main hero (Capell) but can recruit other characters into their party (over a dozen to choose from). These characters are completely AI controlled (and controlled well) but the player can connect with them during battle.

Infinite Undiscovery doesn't offer anything new to the Japanese RPG genre but is still a solid RPG experience for those looking like a game like Final Fantasy on the Xbox 360.

15 - Shadow Hearts (Series)

A Game Like Final Fantasy

Shadow Hearts is a popular Japanese RPG series that has many similiarites to Final Fantasy and Lost Odyssey. The Shadow Hearts series is set in a pre World War 1 setting, making it very unique. This is combined with plenty of plot twists to create a deep and compelling storyline as well as lovable characters.

I really gotta disagree with Kingdom Hearts. Besides the same magic names, Kingdom Hearts doesn't play like Final Fantasy much at all. Final Fantasy (the main series) is about real-time command input, Kingdom Hearts is real-time action, you can't really compare an action game to an RPG, Kingdom Hearts doesn't even have many RPG elements.
