14 Games Like Pokémon: Free, Paid, and Online

Are you a Pokémon fan looking for a game that is similar? If you are like me, you've finished all of the official Pokémon games often enough to finish them with your eyes closed (and in record time).

The games on this page are similar to Pokémon and available on various game platforms including Nintendo DS, iPhone, and online.

The Pokémon game series is well known for its great story lines, turn-based combat, and ability to capture and train various monsters. All the games listed here will incorporate the same features to varying degrees. If you want to prove that you are a true Pokémon fan, I strongly suggest the Pokémon Nuzlocke Challenge (see below) before you try any of these other games.

If you know a game like Pokémon not on the list, let us know in the comment section.

History and Characteristics

Pokémon is a Nintendo-owned franchise that started back in 1996. The franchise includes an anime series, trading card game, toys, books, movies, and video games.

The video game series crosses over many different generations. Regardless of the generation, each game offers a similar gameplay experience, simply adding new features to the previous generation. The Pokémon games generally require the player to defeat a number of gym leaders for badges which will allow them to gain access to the elite Pokémon league (the name of which depends on the generation in question).

The games also have a strong focus on capturing, raising, and battling Pokémon. Each series also contains several legendary Pokémon for players to capture (if they can unlock the secret to finding them).

1 - The Pokémon Nuzlocke Challenge

Gives New Life to Pokémon Games

The Pokémon Nuzlocke Challenge is a challenge you can apply to any Pokémon game. It is simple enough that anybody can do it, but challenging enough so that only true fans will emerge victorious. The Official Nuzlocke Challenge has only two simple rules, but harder versions of the Nuzlocke Challenge have appeared since (see image flowchart below).

The two rules for the standard Nuzlocke Challenge:

1. You can only capture the first Pokémon you encounter in each new area.

2. If a Pokémon faints, it is considered dead and must be released.

Future additions to the Nuzlocke Challenge include options such as no Pokémon Centre healing, set battle style, limited Pokéballs, and even no items whatsoever. Of course how hard you want your Nuzlocke Challenge to be is entirely up to you, use the flowchart linked below to decide.

Battle of Beasts
Battle of Beasts

2 - Battle of Beasts

Prove You Are the Best Creature Trainer as You Create Your Own Realm

Battle of Beasts combines creature training with base building as you create unique habitats for your creatures, build the necessary resource-generating buildings, and train up a powerful fighting force of creatures to complete the campaign or battle against other players.

This unique mixture of genres makes Battle of Beasts extremely addicting and gives you more to do than your standard creature-based adventure. The wait times to create your settlement (known as the realm) are also nearly non-existent, so it avoids the issue free-to-play browser games have with excessive wait times.

On the creature side of things, there is a decent array of creatures such as the basic imp and more powerful scorpion. As they level up, their stats will improve and their special abilities will be unlocked, which allows you to have strategic choice in battle.

3 - Best Fiends

Train a Team of Fiends to Defeat the Evil Slugs

Best Fiends is a role-playing game like Pokémon for iOS and Android devices. The storyline follows you as you set out to train and capture a number of fiends to defeat the evil slugs on your journey to becoming their fearless leader.

Pokémon fans will instantly recognise the gameplay formula of Best Fiends and will enjoy what it has to offer. When you start out, you'll have the option between three different starter creatures (sound familiar?), and from there, you will begin your journey to become the best.

Best Fiends also offers questing, challenges, and even hidden items. The game focuses on PvE and PvP equally to ensure that all gamers are looked after. You have plenty of freedom to focus on questing or rising up the ranks of the arena-focused PvP.

The game is without a doubt the best mobile game like Pokémon.

Lost Magic

4 - Lost Magic

Made for the Nintendo DS

Lost Magic is a mixture of RPG and real-time strategy that was released in 2006. Lost Magic combines two interesting elements that create an interesting and fun gameplay experience.

Players play as a mage and as such must rely on casting various magic spells by drawing rune shapes on the DS touch screen. The power of the spell is also effected by how accurately the rune is drawn, with more powerful spells being tougher to draw. The variety of spell combinations offers players many different gameplay options to create a massive depth of gameplay.

Players can also capture various monsters and use them to aid the player in battle. Most enemies that the player encounters can be captured and then used to fight in a later battle. For the most part, monster control is computer-controlled, but players can issue some basic commands such as who to attack. Players can also equip items to increase their power.

Monster MMORPG is a free browser-based game that has many similarities to the Pokémon series. The graphics are very simple (slightly better than the original Pokemon games), allowing it to be played completely online with no download required.

Monster MMORPG features over 600 pets to capture and train, many different locations, unique monster design, and great chat options. The game relies on a text-based combat system, however, which may turn some players off.

A Fan-Made MMORPG

If you are looking for an online free game like Pokémon, then you can't do better than the fan-made Pokémon Dawn of Darkness. The game is constantly being worked on, with new content and fixes being added regularly. The administrators are also more than happy to listen to player feedback, allowing you to impact the direction that the game takes in the future.

With hundreds of maps, NPCs, avatars, gym battles, mouse and keyboard controls, shops, and a trading system, the game is without a doubt the best online game like Pokemon.

7 - Digimon World DS

Capture Digimon On Your Nintendo DS

Digimon World was a popular RPG for the PlayStation, and the Nintendo DS release saw it move towards a Pokémon style of gameplay.

In Digimon World DS, the player takes the role of a Digimon Tamer and is tasked with discovering, training, and commanding more than 200 unique Digimon. Unlike other collection games, the game doesn't end after you tame them all though, with many features to keep players interested such as Digi-Farms and many other Wi-Fi supported features.

For Pokémon fans who are desperately looking for another monster capture and battle RPG, then Digimon World DS will not disappoint. Digimon World DS received a score of 83% from GameVortex.

Final Fantasy

8 - Final Fantasy (Series)

A Game With Similar Combat Features

While Final Fantasy may seem like a strange inclusion on this list, it actually shares many similarities with the Pokémon series that may attract fans. Some of the later games have moved away from this combat style so check out the Final Fantasy Wikia (linked below) to find all the Final Fantasy games.

While there is no capturing and raising of monsters, the Final Fantasy series does offer turn-based combat and the ability to select which combination of characters you wish to send out into battle (generally chosen early and fixed from then on). From these turn-based combats, your characters gain experience and grow stronger while also acquiring gold to better their equipment.

The Final Fantasy series has been highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike. The game is available across many genres and is a great game for those fans who enjoy the turn-based combat style of Pokémon.

Monster Galaxy: The Zodiac Islands (Monster Galaxy) is available for mobile devices (iPhone and Android) and on Facebook. The game features over 125 unique monsters to catch and battle with and plays out over 14 different islands, offering plenty of gameplay.

Instead of monsters having a type (such as grass or fire) all monsters belong to one of the zodiac signs and have the ability to use a special zodiac attack.

Monster Galaxy uses an energy system, limiting playtime to around 5-10 minutes. While energy does regenerate reasonably quickly, the game is definitely a casual gaming experience.

Good hub, Sam. Some Final Fantasy games actually *do* let you raise monsters, such as FF 13-2. But you're right, the majority don't.

I'm aware that the Pokémon series is extremely popular, but I'm more than surprised to see that there are so many clones out there. I remember an MMO I check out on the PC a long time ago and there was a lot of people playing it at the same time, which was kind of a weird experience, since a lot of seasoned players had legendaries. So you could see people running around with Ho-Ohs and Enteis.

I wrote an article about similar games to Pokémon, but on the Nintendo DS. Here's the link in case someone would like to read it http://gamesretrospect.com/2013/09/top-5-best-game...
