Games Like Terraria: Explore, Fight, Craft and Build

Are you looking for a game like Terraria? Try these great sandbox adventure games that let you explore, loot and craft in a randomly generated game world.

Terraria is a popular sandbox adventure game with a touch of building mechanics. The game is highly rated by fans and critics alike for its strong adventure gameplay, sandbox style freedom and simple (but effective) 2D graphics.

The games on this page offer a variety of experiences and I've ensured this list covers a range of platforms (PC, Mac and iOS) while also including some free options for gamers on a budget.

I originally started playing Terraria after falling in love with Minecraft like many other gamers. I really liked the 2D aspect as it allows you to do things that you simply can't in Minecraft. I spent a lot of time with the game, mostly with friends exploring our vast random worlds.

I've since started searching for similar experiences, make sure you stop by the comments section to share your favourite (either from this list or one that was missed).

Junk Jack
Junk Jack

1 - Junk Jack

Junk Jack offers mining, crafting and exploration on your mobile device. The game is available for your iOS devices and draws heavy inspiration from both Minecraft and Terraria, creating an overall fun and exciting game that will set you back a few dollars.

Junk Jack features crafting, planting, cooking, mobs, achievements and a variety of environments to explore. With its constant stream of game updates it is definitely one of the best sandbox adventure games for the iOS platform.

The game has scored highly with players, constantly scoring 5 star ratings in the App Store (currently holding an average score of 4.5 stars out of 5). While I originally got hooked on the original the enhanced "Junk Jack X" version is the most updated and deep in terms of mechanics now. Junk Jack has also been recently gone Greenlight on Steam which means a PC/Mac release is currently in development, something myself and many others are eagerly following.

Crea

2 - Crea

Crea is focused on providing an easily-moddable game from the get-go. The game adds some RPG elements, combat, crafting and random world generation to round out a fun experience.

The game is in development (beta currently available on their website) and reached its funding goal on Kickstarter last year, I've been watching its development closely and really excited with what is on offer.

Crea plans to rely heavily on a community of modders to enhance the gameplay by altering the characters, items, biomes and monsters within the game world. This means that people who usually avoid modding due to its complexities with some games (like myself) will have a chance to join in because of the mod tools available at launch. This idea will either thrive or die though depending on the dedication of the community, but even without the additional modded content the core gameplay is very polished, fun and addicting.

The game plans to eventually utilise the Steam Workshop for the sharing, rating and downloading of mods. If the game interests you then consider pre-ordering to get beta access right now.

Deepworld
Deepworld

3 - Deepworld

Deepworld is a multiplayer crafting adventure game for Mac, Windows and iOS. The game is available through the Steam service (as an Early Access game) and on the Apple Store. While originally a paid game Deepworld has opted for the free to play model with micro-transactions.

Deepworld allows you explore a massive game world that feature caves, mountains, ruins and other player created locations. These places are not without danger (or reward) with players encouraged to explore areas with friends for loot and adventure.

To protect yourself (and your friends) from the large number of threats, you'll have to rely on the large armament of weapons and protective inventions available which slowly increase as you progress further in the game or can be boosted through the real money transaction system.

Notable features include a large number of craftable items, achievements, character skill points, teleportation, day/night cycles, weather and quests. Deepworld still has some development to go but has definitely gotten my friends and I hooked on the community elements that the game offers.

Starbound
Starbound

4 - Starbound

Starbound has a great Terraria feel to it and is one of the most comparable on this list in overall look and feel. In its Kickstarter campaign the game raised over a million dollars (from nearly 70,000 backers) setting a whole new record (at the time) for indie game development.

After reading about the game it is easy to see why the game attracted such a following. It simply has everything that you could ever want and is basically Terraria with the ability to explore extra planets.

The key to the success in the game is in its large amount of random and infinite game elements. Everything is random in the game world including quests, items, planet weather, day/night cycles, enemies and the visual elements. This easily means that you'll be able to play the game several times and still not experience everything it has to offer.

On top of this randomness the game is highly customisable with a large selection of blocks and six playable game races which change the way you approach the game.

Starbound definitely promises an experience that you won't get tired of any time soon. I played at least 200 hours before writing this review and all I can think about right now is going back, jumping to a fresh planet and playing some more.

Craft The World
Craft The World

5 - Craft The World

Craft The World is one of my favourite Terraria alternatives (although I've featured it lower on this page as it has less similarity than those games featured above).

In the game your challenge is to take your dwarven settlement through the end game portal. In order to do so you'll have to dig out the game world to find the hidden portal pieces and open up the portal. This is anything but easier though with powerful enemies protecting each piece and regular attacks from the undead.

While Craft The World is similar in some regards to Terraria it is also quite different with a focus on resource management and planning rather than exploration and looting.

My favourite elements of Craft The World include the technology tree that takes you from wooden pickaxes and leather armour to Mithrool tools and Tesla Cannons. Each step forward in this tree requires increasingly rare resources and for you to build the prerequisites first.

The game originally launched with 3 increasingly difficult worlds but now also includes multiplayer (PvP or co-operative) along with more biomes.

Epic Inventor
Epic Inventor

6 - Epic Inventor

Epic Inventor should be your first stop if you are looking for a high quality free game like Terraria, it offers similar gameplay and features the same 2D graphic style. Epic Inventor calls itself a 'side-scrolling action RPG' and is completely free to download and install which is what originally attracted me to the game.

Unfortunately the game is no longer in active development but has gone open-source ensuring the game will continue to live on. While the lack of development does mean you won't be seeing too many new features Epic Inventor has all the core features you need for an enjoyable experience and one I still play from time to time.

The game plays out like most sandbox games in this genre with your early game involving the gathering of various resources and learning the basic game mechanics.

It then shifts focus to building a city with buildings that make resource gathering easier (or allow you to craft more complex items). From there it is up to you to defend your great city from a variety of enemies. Thankfully Epic Inventor offers a ton of traps and defences that you can use to protect yourself and your buildings. Eventually the game feels similar to Craft The World, another popular sandbox game that I greatly enjoy (see number 9 on this list)

For the Terraria fan on a budget you simply can't beat Epic Inventor.

King Arthur's Gold
King Arthur's Gold

7 - King Arthur's Gold (KAG)

King Arthur's Gold is another 2D game that focuses on player-versus-player combat. Players gather resources, build defensive (or offensive) structures and fight enemies in this fun and fast-paced game. King Arthur's Gold is available on PC, Mac and Linux.

It offers three very different playable classes: the Knight (a brute-force warrior with a sword and shield), the Archer (a rogue type character who uses long-range weaponry) and the Builder (who is in charge of building defences and various traps). These three unique classes offer plenty of gameplay variety and give the longevity that a multiplayer game needs.

While the basic game without multiplayer is available for free, the paid version of the game offers many benefits. These include player customisation, premium servers, exclusive equipment and the extremely fun single-player zombie fortress game mode.

Minecraft
Minecraft

8 - Minecraft

This list would not be complete without Minecraft making an appearance. As one of the most popular games in the genre, with an emphasis on building and exploration the community that you gain access to is the best aspect of Minecraft.

The main difference between the two is that Minecraft uses all 3 dimensions compared with the two of Terraria. This does allow for some additional options in building and personally I've always found the controls of Minecraft easier and more enjoyable (as you get to face enemies head on).

Minecraft allows you to play online for free in a creative game mode where you focus on building things. While the premium version allows you to download the game and gain access to multiplayer features, including a survival mode where you attempt to survive in an unforgiving and randomly-generated game world.

With the consistent updates that game has been able to maintain and its player base in the millions if you don't own a copy of Minecraft by now you're definitely missing out.

Treasure Adventure Game
Treasure Adventure Game

9 - Treasure Adventure Game

Treasure Adventure Game is another open-world 2D adventure which is free to play. While the game doesn't have building elements, it offers great exploration-style gameplay that is very enjoyable and one of the best exploration-based experiences in the genre.

Treasure Adventure Game offers huge open-world environments (which are all unique and interesting), changing weather, NPCs and an amazingly beautiful soundtrack.

The game puts you in the shoes of a young boy and then places you in a massive game world. Within the game you will accept quests and travel across oceans as you seek adventure and lost treasure.

While the experience is must slower pace than Terraria and doesn't involve building mechanics the atmosphere and 2D graphics still make this a must play. The success of Treasure Adventure Game has lead to the development of a paid sequel Treasure Adventure World, which is still under development.

Dwarf Fortress
Dwarf Fortress

10 - Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress is one of the unique inclusions on this list but I strongly urge fans of adventure games to try it.

Players control a group of dwarves and are then given the task of building a mountain fortress that they can call home. The world is not without its dangers though as there are evil night creatures just waiting to invade your fortress, ramsack your kingdom and kill every last dwarf in your legacy.

Each game is unique thanks to the random world generation and the complex game engine behind the scenes, making each adventure unique and interesting. This allows Dwarf Fortress to be a game that delivers incredible amounts of content, comparable to the likes of Terraria and Minecraft.

Dwarf Fortress offers a deep adventure and if you don't mind the learning curve or the ASCII style graphics (which can be changed with mods), it will provide endless hours of fun. If you are after a free game with plenty of depth then you can't pass up this one.

@Tommyisboss: Make a straight platform above the houses for the most part so that you don't have to jump or weave anything. Take a thorn potion, a battle potion (I believe that's the one that makes you hit harder) and a potion that makes you heal faster. Then plant camp fires along your platform (they make you heal quicker) place them so that you reach another one as soon as your out of range of the last. Heart statues hooked up to wires give heart, but they're unmakable and rare. Then make sure you have a melee for close up AND a gun (likely the mini shark w. meteor shot) for long distance. Hope this helps ^^
