1 - Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (Series)
One Of The Best Space RTS Games Like StarCraft 2
Dawn of War is a popular RTS series of games like StarCraft. The game series offers a military science fiction RTS experience making it very similar to what offer StarCraft offers. Having sold over 7 million copies this game series is definitely one of the most popular games like StarCraft 2.
Dawn of War features a number of different factions which players will get to play in both single player and multiplayer game modes. Every faction is also very unique with different units and buildings to create difference playstyles.
A unique feature of the Dawn of War series is how resources are handled, to generate resources players must hold strategic points and relics to gain resources. Warfare is also a unique experience with units being split into squads rather than individual units.
Dawn of War is definitely a great space RTS series for fans of StarCraft.
Warhammer 40K Games
Get the Platinum edition of the first Dawn of War game to unlock the original game and the available expansion packs.
These days because of the games age the bundle packs are so close to just the stand alone main game in terms of price it would be silly not to grab the bundle for all the additional content.
The second game in the Dawn of War series also offers a great experience. The gold edition offers the original game and the expansion pack in one bundle.
Personally I didn't like the direction that the second game took but I still recommend checking it out and deciding for yourself.
2 - Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Another Blizzard RTS Game Like StarCraft
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is another Blizzard RTS which offers a very similar game experience to the StarCraft series. Despite its age its still a highly popular game which will not disappoint RTS fans.
Warcraft III offers players 4 different playable races (Human, Orcs, Elves and Undead) to offer a variety of options in single and multiplayer. The game offers a single player campaign for each of these races for players to experience.
The maps that are available in Warcraft III offer a variety of environments so the maps will never get old. A unique feature of Warcraft is the addition of neutral monsters scattered across the map and the hero system which allows players to level up a hero character and gear them with items to increase their power.
Warcraft offers the same level of polish as StarCraft (as you would expect from a Blizzard game) making it one of the better RTS games available today despite its age.
3 - Total Annihilation
One Of The Best Old Games Like StarCraft
Total Annihilation is one of the older games like StarCraft out there but is an absolute classic in the RTS genre and one that any sci-fi RTS fan must experience.
The gameplay of Total Annihilation focuses around players taking a civilization from beginning to peak by gathering resources, recruiting units and researching technology as you complete various missions and objectives. Every large scale battle will be paired with a strong soundtrack that creates an amazing atmosphere.
Total Annihilation will take you on a journey across the galaxy and feels reminiscent of the original StarCraft adventure.
4 - Halo Wars
An Xbox 360 Game Like StarCraft
Halo Wars is an RTS game that is available on the Xbox 360, making it one of the few RTS games available on a console system. RTS veterans may find the game a little lacking in strategic options (a limit that arises because the game is console).
Halo Wars was praised by critics for capturing the Halo universe and also providing a great RTS game experience that is yet to be matched on a console game.
In Halo Wars players will mostly focus their attention towards commanding their army as resource collection and base construction are fairly streamlined. Players play as the humans (Covenant are only available in multiplayer) in a story driven campaign which can be played solo or co-operatively with a friend.
If you are a fan of the Halo universe or just interested in playing an RTS on your console Halo Wars is the prefect option.
If you want to start playing Halo Wars be sure to pick up the Platinum Hits edition of the game.
With Platinum Hits you get the original game along with all of the DLC packs which add additional game content and multiplayer game modes.
5 - Command and Conquer (Series)
A Series Of RTS Games Like StarCraft
Command and Conquer is another popular RTS game franchise which started back in 1995, since then there have been many games added to the series so there is plenty of RTS gameplay available.
The Command and Conquer games are known for their side bar interface as opposed to the control bars that usually appear at the bottom of the screen in other RTS games.
The Command and Conquer games offer similar gameplay to other real time strategy games and focus on the gathering of resources, building up a base and then assaulting the enemies base to win the game. While all factions have similar units available to them they each have unique technologies and some special unites to create variety.
Command and Conquer was also one of the first RTS games to incorporate multiplayer and this has been expanded on throughout the series to offer a number of different game modes.
6 - Age of Empires
Another Series Of RTS Games Like StarCraft
Age of Empires is another series of popular RTS games that take place throughout history. The game series started back in 1997 and has since expanded to a number of games and expansion packs. There is also an online version of the franchise available (already featured on this page).
With Age of Empires being based on history there are plenty of different experiences to be had from stone age to revolution. You'll also get to experience plenty of different countries including Asia, America, Europe and more.
The AI of the Age of Empires series has been particularly praised for its focus on utilising tactics and strategies as opposed to cheating which many other RTS games employ.
I have enjoyed all the games in the series and played the first and second game extensively in the online environment. I recommend new comers to the series start with the most recent game (seen below) which will also improve your multiplayer options as the older games lack a dedicated community for those that wish to take their RTS skills to the online environment.
7 - Dark Reign
Another Older Game Like StarCraft
Dark Reign is an RTS game like StarCraft available for your PC that follows the war between the Imperium and Freedom Guard.
Dark Reign is one of the classic RTS games out there with a journey that focuses on players saving their civilization which is deep in war. The game includes more than 35 units for you to work into your ideal strategy, unlike other games every single unit has a use in the game which is something that even modern RTS games have not been able to achieve and really lets you craft a strategy for the particular scenario.
The game also offers a huge array of mods and a complex AI to give the game even more longevity beyond the original campaign.
8 - Universe At War: Earth Assault
Another Great RTS Game Like StarCraft
Universe At War: Earth Assault is an RTS game available on Windows and Xbox 360 that was released in 2007.
Universe At War: Earth Assault takes place in the year 2012 after an alien race (Hierarchy) lands on Earth to strip the planet bare. Luckily for Earth though we are saved just in time by the Novus machines, who fight the Hierarchy wherever they go. From here the war begins for Earth.
Universe At War offers three game modes; single player, scenario and multiplayer. Single player involves a campaign story mode while scenario lets players use any of the available races in a custom match where players setup their desired situation and attempt to defend (or take over) the Earth.
Universe At War was a well rated game that was played by many StarCraft fans while they waited for the StarCraft 2 release.
