Great Car Travel Games

Updated on August 4, 2013

Car Games Will Keep Travel Fun!

Back in the heyday of Route 66, riding in the car was an adventure. Many families took the time to explore the novelty sights along the road and spent quality time together. Remember the time spent looking for licenses from different states? In this age, we seem to zone out into our own little world as the road zips by. I'm not against electronics, but something is missing when everyone has their ipod turned on or the xm radio blasting. Why not take the time on your next trip and have some family time in the car. Car Games can help keep your child engaged while riding. The products listed below will help strengthen your brain muscles and tighten the bonds of your family. You will be laughing, thinking, and enjoying the company of your loved ones. I hope you will introduce your family to these car games and have a great time.

A Car Game Can Encourage Your Child's Artistic Abilities On Your Trip - Coloring Is A Great Activity

Is your child left brained? Some people think that if you are then you will have difficulty in the artistic field. If you find yourself or your child struggling, then hand them a ruler. Left brained people like the order and structure of things such as rulers. Show your child how to draw line and just play with the different angles they can make. Color in the various triangles, rectangles, hexagons, and more that they draw. Help them identify the different shapes they make. Just the fact that they have a ruler in hand will help overcome being hesitant with art.

If your child is right brained, then this should come naturally. They will want to express and create. Many do not need much assistance when it comes to being creative. I know my right brained little girl can spend hours drawing and playing make believe. If they still find themselves stumped as to what to draw, then try this activity: Start with a line, curve, oval ect. Pass your doodle pad back and forth making shapes until something emerges. Build on the picture and have fun! Car Games are a great way to interact with your family while traveling, so try this drawing game on your next trip.

Start A Car Game With Coloring Pads and Doodle Pads

Coloring supplies have been a lifesaver in the car. My daughter is 7 and loves to draw. I highly recommend getting art supplies. These can keep your children busy for at least an hour. You can play games as well. Bring back the oldies like hangman and have everyone play along in the car.

A Car Game Can Increase Spacial Thinking On Your Next Road Trip

Spacial Reasoning is one way to help your child increase their brain power. Spacial Reasoning involves manipulating objects, knowing their relationship to the world, problem solving which involves manipulating an object, puzzles, prediction, and analytical skills.

Sounds like a lot to take on, but you can do this in a fun way with puzzles. Boys in particular are good at spacial reasoning, but the whole family will enjoy Thinkfun's products. They are engaging and hands on puzzles that everyone can enjoy. Why not help your child learn to problem solve with a car game? They won't know what you are up to because they are having so much fun.

Add Thinkfun Products To Your Car Games

Years ago I babysat for a little girl. She had Thinkfun's Rush Hour. We had a great time doing these puzzles. You can adjust the difficulty level to stump both the kids as well as the adults. The pieces are easy to store and will make for a great car game. The best part is that it does indeed make you think!

These Car Games Help Your Child Improve Hand Eye Coordination

Like the Thinkfun products, Perplexus has also introduced products which help with Spacial Reasoning, but they also help with hand eye coordination. Their handheld puzzles involve manipulating a ball around almost 100 obstacles. They will have to twist, turn, and concentrate while guiding the ball on its journey to the finish. A steady hand is needed, and your children will have fun while learning.

These are not puzzles that are solved in minutes. You have to take time to get through each obstacle along the way. The best thing about it is that you will not lose any pieces in the car! It is a self contained game for the car! Remember that a car game should include pieces that stay on the game board. Losing pieces is no fun when riding in the car.

Perplexus Hand Held Puzzles Are Great Car Games

The beauty of these puzzles is that the ball inside cannot fall out and get lost under the car seat! If your child loves puzzles, then they will be entertained and challenged by these puzzles. Why not buy two and have a race to see who finishes first? A car game should be as self contained as possible so you do not lose pieces!

Classic Road Trip Games For The Car

Melissa and Doug has produced many great games and puzzles for kids, and they offer a few versions of classic games. Before there were handheld gaming devices, kids would use a pad of paper and a pencil to while away their time in the car. Hangman games were used to stump mom and dad. Fierce games of tic-tac-toe were played with much thinking involved on just what square was the best to start the game with. Children stared out the car window looking for that elusive license plate from Hawaii. These sturdy games will hold up well in the car and take their minds off the ever popular question- "are we there yet?" A Car Game does not have to be complicated. These games are simple and stand the test of time.

Use Melissa and Doug Travel For Your Next Car Game

If you know Melissa and Doug's products, then you know that they make a variety of toys for small children. Teach your children some of the simpler classics. You can pass the time in games of hangman, bingo, and more while riding in the car. A car game can keep all ages entertained during those long trips.

It's Ok To Ask These Questions On A Road Trip

Help your kids get their minds off the quintessential road trip question by offering one of these books. Twenty questions is a great game for the car. Kids, stump mom and dad by picking really off the wall answers- Yellow Bellied Sap Suckers anyone? Or you can try to solve mysteries or riddles. Have a great time together trying to figure out just what the answer is or have a contest on which team can answer the most in 10 minutes. Use your problem solving and deductive reasoning skills to figure it out. The Sherlock Holmes of your family will enjoy the chase.

Twenty Questions and More for the Car Ride

Why sit in silence as everyone listens to their favorite music or play on their game console? Spend some quality family time by using these question based games. You can be sure to stir up some interesting conversations along the way!

Rush Hour: A Great Puzzle for the Whole Family

If you have never played Rush Hour, then I highly recommend you rush right over to Amazon and buy one. These puzzles will challenge your brain and keep you entertained. There are several levels of play so that both the beginner and expert can be challenged. The case is great for travel. It holds the game pieces and puzzle cards in a nice little carrier which also acts as the puzzle board.

The concept is this-get the red car through traffic. It sounds easy until you start playing. It's comparable to those little novelty plastic tile picture games where you shift pieces around to form a picture. In this case, you are shifting cars around to make a clear path for the red car to get out of traffic.

Your children will have fun while learning, and Rush Hour is the perfect car game!

Keep the Kids Laughing With Mad Libs

Mad libs are just so ___(adjective)________. Your family will be sure to __(verb)________ and laugh so hard that tears come to their eyes. I can remember many __(plural noun)____ of Mad Lib with my best friend in ___(adjective)_________ school. It is such a simple concept but so much fun! Your kids will be learning the different parts of sentence structure which should be __(adverb)________ educational. How can you go wrong? Everyone will want to join in on the fun!

Nothing Like A Good Word Search or Crossword Puzzle

Puzzle books seem to attract certain people. If you are not one of them, then maybe you should reconsider. There are many different types of puzzle books available these days. Games such as Sudoku and Crosswords are available. Everyone can expand their vocabulary or math skills by tackling a good puzzle book. The best thing about it is that your skills will get better as you complete each puzzle, and you can put it down anytime you are stumped.

What is your favorite road trip game?

Excellent lens, it really pops! This subject is one close to my heart because we traveled a lot when my kids were young, before there were such electronic gadgets as we have today. I'm glad to see this encouragement for kids to use their imagination and their minds. Blessed by a SquidAngel.

Amy, I love your lens. I think more and more people are conditioning their children by using video, DVD and other electronic devices. These kind of activities that spur the imagination are far more beneficial. Thanks!

No road trip is a road trip unless it involves massively long sing-alongs with people trying to think up weird songs as you go along.
