Greek Goddess Barbie Dolls

Updated on September 11, 2013

Limited edition goddesses from Barbie

The Greek Goddesses are fantastic figures of mythology and have been turned into some beautiful limited edition Barbie dolls, worthy of their rich mythological heritage. While only a handful of magical Greek women have been turned into dolls, the few that have are an absolute must for any collector of Grecian beauties and mythological figures.

Exclusive Gold Label Medusa Doll

From the breathtaking Medusa to the martially glorious Athena, to the more generic Roman-Greek goddess of Spring, Wisdom and Beauty, each of these dolls is worth a look, and they'll have you coming back for a longer one. And when you want more, then there's a rich and diverse range of OOAK (one of a kind) dolls on eBay - collectable barbie dolls modified by skilled artists to create gorgeous goddesses.

The mother of Eros, and the inspiration for the Roman goddess Venus (best known for her birth from a giant shell), Aphrodite is the goddess of love. She is believed to have risen from the ocean foam, though in other stories is the daughter of the Earth goddess Dione and Zeus.

Motherless, Athena sprang fully formed from Zeus' forehead. She is the virgin goddess of wisdom, and her symbols are the owl and the aegis (a sort of shield). She was the patron saint of Athens, and her dominion covered war, wisdom, crafts, frequently accompanies heroes in mythology (usually in an advisory role), and turned Arachne into a spider after the latter engaged in an ill advised weaving contest.

She is also known as Pallas Athena, having taken the name Pallas after accidentally killing someone of that name (the tales var extremely widely as to whom that was).

Her Roman version was Minerva, who was very similar.

Medusa - The girl who became a Gorgon

Best known as the snake haired Gorgon that turns any man who meets her gaze to stone, Medusa was once a human girl, according the fifth century BC mythology. Long before her defeat at the hands of Perseus, she served in Athena's temple as an astonishingly beautiful maiden. When she was raped by Poseidon, Athena turned her into a Gorgon.

This version is rather different from the earlier origin myth, which had her as one of three monstrous sisters, but is obviously the one being represented by this doll!

The most gorgeous in the Goddess series, the Medusa is a rare and marvellous beauty.

Kidnapped by Hades in the famous story of Persephone and her pomegranates, Persephone became the goddess of spring, when she returned to the world after her winter in the Underworld, and her mother Demeter brought the world to life once more. She is known as Kore (the Maiden), and was usually pictured either as the Queen of the Underworld, or together with her mother.

In Roman mythology, her counterpart was Flora, a goddess of flowers and the season of spring.
