HOMEWORLD: Shipbreakers

Updated on November 15, 2014

It is finally coming!

15 years ago, a game was published bearing the name Homeworld. After so many years of waiting, there is finally some word on the new game in the Homeworld universe. 2013 was really turbulent year for this franchise Things were going well for BlackBird Interactive and their plans for HARDWARE: Shipbreakers. It was a game that was supposed to be free to play, a ground based Sci-Fi RTS set in some new and unknown universe. But then, it happened. THQ, the owner of Homeworld franchise bankrupted. This disaster ( I call it a disaster because THQ was a really good company, with a plethora of fantastic games ) started a chain of events that, as a result, will bring back to life one of my dearest games. When Gearbox acquired Homeworld franchise, Homeworld community was devastated. Nobody thought that this company, birthplace of Borderlands, will bring back our cherished memories and even reward us with a sequel. We were so wrong. Almost the same day that they acquired the license, Gearbox announced that they are partnering up with BlackBird Interactive on a new Homeworld project. Few hours later, HARDWARE: Shipbreakers was no more. In its place there was a new image, and on the top of it proudly stood the name: "HOMEWORLD"

The exciting return of Homeworld universe!

  • Made by Homeworld original creators.
  • An engaging RTS experience.
  • This will be the first game in Homeworld universe in more than 10 years.
  • It will be a prequel to the original game.
  • Fantastic and engaging RTS experience..

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 were iconic games that were played out in space. Unlike them, Shipbreakers will be a ground based RTS game. It is speculated that it will be set on a desert planet Kharak. This was a starting place of original Homeworld game, a planet to which entire Kushan race was exiled.

Before Blackbird acquired licensing for Homeworld franchise, this game was set to happen on a planet known as LM-27, and it was supposed to feature different groups of mercenaries fighting for salvaging of derelict ships.

Except the changes from LM-27 to Kharak, it is still unclear how much of this will survive into Homeworld Shipbreakers. In the original game there were no such wrecks on Kharak apart from the Khar-Toba.

What about the originals?

There is no need to worry about this. Blackbird Interactive announced that they will remake both of the original games. New Hi-def textures will be implemented. One of the most beautiful aspects of this, is that they will also remake all of those fantastic cutscenes that brought Homeworld universe to life so many years ago.

It was also mentioned that both games will be available for digital download for Windows PC

Story so far...

Gearbox acquired Homeworld franchise after THQ bankruptcy. In their own statement they said that Gaerbox is not the best place to develop this iconic sci-fi RTS successor. As such, they are giving the Black Bird Interactive all the financial support they need and they are allowing them to use Homeworld franchise.

It is still very early to speculate how this is going to play out.

I will be updating this page as new information becomes available.

It's always great to hear some good old stuff is still around: alive and kickin'. I hope this works out well.
