As the author of the Baby-Boomer-Retirement blog, I have learned that one of the biggest concerns of many Baby Boomers and their aging parents is the possibility of developing Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. I know in my own family, my mother, mentally alert for most of her life, has recently lost her short-term memory. When I spoke to her on the phone on Christmas day, she could not remember that she had spent Christmas Eve with my sister and her family ... even though she had spent the previous night with them. She calmly told me that she had stayed home and done nothing for Christmas Eve. I was shocked at how much memory she has lost, and dread the thought that it could happen to me.
Knowing that the tendency to develop some forms of dementia may run in families makes it even more important to me that I do whatever I can to remain mentally sharp. Over the past few years, there have been a lot of ideas about how to protect your brain. I will discuss some of them later in this article. One of the recent discoveries, however, is the fact that certain types of video games can actually have a beneficial effect on our brains.

One of the companies that has a full line of wonderful brain games is Brain Age. I like their games. They are fun and they offer a wide variety of choices. There is no reason to be bored from repeating the same game over and over again which, in itself, could hasten dementia.
Instead, if you wish to protect your brain, you can choose a different game to play each day, always keeping your mind working on new problems and puzzles. In this way, you are exercising every part of your brain.

How to Protect Your Brain from Mental Decline
While we cannot prevent all forms of dementia, there are steps that everyone can take to at least postpone it. As far as I'm concerned, the longer I can keep my mental faculties, the happier I will be. Here are some suggestions that have been recommended by researchers:
1. Don't smoke. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen you get to your brain. While you may go decades without a problem, eventually your oxygen starved brain will start to decline ... if you haven't died of heart disease or cancer first. My mother has smoked for more than 65 years. While she has remained cancer free, she does suffer from heart disease and dementia, yet she continues to smoke, anyway.
2. Minimize your alcohol consumption. There appears to be some health advantages to a small amount of alcohol each day. However, excessive drinking (more than one small drink for women or two small drinks for men each day) can hasten your mental decline. In addition, if you continue to drink after beginning to show signs of dementia, it will be even more difficult to think clearly.
3. Get exercise. Exercise increases the blood flow throughout the body, including to the brain. The blood brings oxygen with it, which will help your brain function at peak performance.
4. Work your brain. This is where video games and other brain games come in. Work crossword puzzles, learn a new language, try higher level math problems, solve puzzles, take classes, read books. The more you work your brain in a variety of ways, the longer your brain will continue to work for you.
5. Check your medications. If you or someone you love seems to be developing dementia despite everything else you have tried, talk to your family physician about the medications that could be causing this decline. Some medications can cause symptoms of dementia that can easily be resolved by a change in medication.
6. Finally, if you believe you are getting dementia, see your doctor. Today there are several medications than can help slow down the memory loss. The sooner you start them, the better off you will be.
