Kenner Super Powers Collection
Kenner Super Powers Collection
The Kenner Super Powers Collection was a very popular 80's toy line. The Super Powers featured heroes and villains from the DC Universe such as Superman, Batman, the Joker, and Lex Luthor. The line is appropriately named as each figure possessed an action "super power" like punching, kicking, etc. They are just as popular today as they were when they debuted. Super Powers action figures, accessories, vehicles and the Hall of Justice are some of the most sought after vintage toys on the planet. This lens will provide quality information on the Kenner Super Powers Collection and also show you where to find them!

Man of Steel
Superman is one of the all time great characters and his Kenner Superpowers action figure is just awesome. Superman has "Super Action Punch" superpower that is activated by squeezing his legs. Collectors should watch out for "cape swapping" with this figure. The original cape for this figure is red and features the classic "S" in yellow. Also, collectors should also watch out for the Toybiz knockoff version.
Clark Kent was originally a special mail away offer. By mailing in proof of purchases of other figures, one could acquire Superman's alter-ego. Kent's super power punch is activated by squeezing his legs together. This is not the first time that a hero's secret identity has been made available in action figure form. However, this is one of the best renditions of a super hero's secret identity in my opinion.
The Green Lantern has "Ring Thrust" super power which is activated by squeezing his legs and there is a knockoff version of this figure produced by good ol' Toybiz. I am a big fan of this action figure and love that the lantern is included. I think some forget that Green Lantern needs the lantern to recharge his power ring. However, I have to say that I feel it was a mistake for Kenner to not produce a Sinestro Super Powers action figure. Especially since I feel like there were some odd choices for villains.
The Flash is a very common figure and a collector can find one very easily for a low price. The Flash has no accessories and his super power "Lightning Legs" are activated by squeezing his arms. The Flash also has a very unique detail. If you examine the soles of his boots you will see treads for traction. The Flash also has a knockoff version that was produced by Toybiz.
The Dark Knight
Batman has Power Action Bat Punch when his legs are squeezed together. One of my favorite figures of the Super Powers Collection. I love the way the cape is designed and the shade of blue selected for both the cape and the figure. A great interpretation of such a classic character.
Robin has "Karate Chop" super power which is activated by squeezing his legs and Toybiz produced a knockoff version of him too ! I thought it was cool that Kenner decided to go with the karate chop super power. I think this was a very subtle way of making the action figure more interesting. It's tough living in Batman's shadow and I think the choice of unique super power helps Robin stand alone a bit better.
Hawkman is such a great action figure and another one of my favorites. I love his wings, mask design and mace weapon. Hawkman is bigger than most of the other Super Powers and he has "Flight Wings" super power which is activated when you squeeze his legs. Toybiz also knocked off this action figure so again collectors, be careful !
King of the Seven Seas
Aquaman has power action "Deep Sea Kick" when you press his arms together and comes with his Trident which I think is very cool. There is a Toybiz knockoff version. Aquaman has been the butt of people's jokes for years and I think in large part to his affiliation with the Justice League of America in 70's and 80's cartoons. Aquaman was blatantly in the shadow of the other team members such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. With that said, I feel Aquaman is a great character and this action figure is awesome! On a side note, I do wish Kenner would have produced a Black Manta Super Powers action figure. I think they missed the boat with not including Aquaman's fiercest rival in the collection.
Wonder Woman is a great action figure and one of the true classic characters in the DC Comics universe. Wonder Woman has "Deflector Bracelets" super power which activated by squeezing the legs and comes with the "Magic Lasso". I personally think the super power for this figure is super cool and gives it a unique representation that is not a punch. There is a Toybiz knockoff version.
Brilliant Evil Scientist
I was always a big fan of the design of this action figure. After all, Lex is smart enough to create a super powered suit to keep up with his arch rival, Superman. Lex Luthor has power action Nuclear Punch.
The Living Computer
Brainiac has Power Action Computer Kick when his arms are squeezed together. I am not a fan of this action figure for several reasons. I don't like this updated "terminator" version in place of the classic Brainiac look. Also, this figure usually has problems with the left arm being loose or broken. This may have been a problem with the manufacturing of the figure.
Clown Prince of Crime
The Joker is Batman's #1 nemesis. The Joker has his "Power Action Madcap Mallet" that is activated by squeezing the legs. The Joker is one of the great comic book villains and his Super Powers figure is a great representation.
Fowl Criminal Mastermind
The Penguin has super power "Umbrella Arm" which is activated by squeezing his legs. Toybiz knocked this figure off as well. The Penguin's umbrella also has a "blade" that comes out of the top when you slide the lever up. A controversial choice of weapons for a kid's toy but I never heard of any fuss about it. I think this is a great figure because Kenner does a nice job with details. Kenner captures the short, stout physique of The Penguin perfectly. Details like that are what makes the Super Powers Collection so popular and sought after.
Series 1 Vehicles
Kenner Super Powers Collection Series 1 included three vehicles- the Batmobile, Supermobile and Lex-Soar 7.

The Kenner Super Powers interpretation of the Batmobile is one of the best that I've ever seen. This Batmobile comes equipped with several "super powers" including Bat-Ram, Bat-Claw and Bat-Lights.
The Kenner Super Powers Supermobile is a great updated design on Superman's mechanical defense against deadly kryptonite. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed that they did not incorporate the "super arms" as seen in the Super Friends cartoon. The mechanical arms attached to that version of the Supermobile were used so Superman could handle kryptonite without having to touch the deadly substance himself.
Kenner's choice to give Lex Luthor a vehicle to combat the Supermobile was brilliant. If Lex Luthor is a scientific criminal genius than he should be able to come up with something clever and effective like the Lex-Soar 7.
The second series of the Kenner Super Powers Collection consisted of 11 action figures and were Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Red Tornando, Dr. Fate, Firestorm, Darkseid, Kalibak, Desaad, Parademon, Mantis, and Steppen Wolf.

Red Tornado has "Power Action Tornado Twist" superpower that is activated by squeezing his arms. Despite being a more obscure character of the DC Universe, I think this is one of the better figures of the collection. His superpower tornado twist is great and the figure is greatly detailed plus I'm a big fan of the color scheme for this character.
Martian Manhunter has Power Action Martian Punch when you squeeze the legs. Not one of the more popular characters from the DC Universe but I like this action figure for it's uniqueness and color scheme. Reminds me a little of a very famous Marvel super hero who also has green skin.
The Nuclear Man
Fire Storm has "Atomic Punch" super power which is activated when you squeeze his legs. I'm a big fan of this action figure and Fire Storm is probably my favorite of the obscure characters chosen for the Kenner Super Powers Collection. Fire Storm is a very similar male version of Marvel's female Fire Star character.
The Green Arrow has "Archery Pull" super power which is activated by squeezing the legs together. Collector's should note that a "complete" Green Arrow includes his bow, bow string, and TWO arrows- one arrow ready to be shot from the bow and a spare. The Green Arrow is obviously a take on the classic Robin Hood character.
Doctor Fate has power action "Mystic Spell Cast" when you press his legs together. A more obscure character from the DC Universe but I like his "knightly" look and color scheme.
Lord of Apokalips
Darkseid has "Raging Motion" super power which is activated when you squeeze his legs and also has "Omega Effect" super power which is activated by shining light on the top of his head ( makes eyes glow). This is one of the larger action figures in the Super Powers Collection and Darkseid has a very menacing look which is great for this intergalactic super villain.
Scourge of Apokalips
Steppen Wolf has "Electro-axe Chop" super power which is activated by squeezing his legs together. One of my favorite obscure villains chosen for the Kenner Super Powers Collection. I like his costume and "devilish" look. Collector's should note that a complete Steppen Wolf includes his axe weapon which is connected by a string to his back.
Cruel Prince of Apokalips
Kalibak has Power Action Beta Club Swing when his legs are squeezed together. I really enjoy the uniqueness of this action figure. Kind of reminds me of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Airborne Army of Apokalips
Parademon has Power Action Battle Flight when you squeeze the legs. The Parademons remind me of the Flying Monkeys from the Wizard of Oz. A "complete" Parademon includes his yellow ray gun. I find the gun to be very annoying because it does not fit comfortably in the hand of the action figure. It is extremely difficult to position the gun where it won't fall out of Parademon's hand.
Tiny Tyrant of Terror
Desaad has power action Shock Squeeze when you squeeze the legs together. One of my least favorite action figures of the Kenner Super Powers Collection. Reminds me a bit of the Emperor from Star Wars.
The Energy Vampire
Mantis has power action Pincer Thrust. I remember having this figure as a kid and thinking he was pretty cool. I like the color scheme and also the fact that he's a little bit bigger than most of the other super powers.
The third series of the Kenner Super Powers Collection(which I originally did not own) consisted of 10 action figures and were Shazam, Mr. Miracle, Plastic Man, Cyborg, Orion, Samurai, Cyclotron, Mr. Freeze, Golden Pharaoh, and Tyr .

The World's Mightiest Mortal
Shazam has Power Action Thunder Punch when his legs are squeezed together. I am a big fan of Shazam and love Kenner's interpretation of him. Shazam is one of the more under rated comic book characters in my opinion.
The Titanium Titan
Cyborg is an awesome action figure in the Super Powers collection- one of the best in my opinion. The complete figure ( which this one is) features 3 detachable Action Arms ( fist, drill & wrench claw) and has Power Action Thrusting Arms when you squeeze the legs.
Elastic Crime Fighter
Plastic Man has super power stretching neck. I think he's extremely cool! I remember liking the Saturday morning Plastic Man cartoon. This is really a unique action figure and a great representation of the Plastic Man character.
The Japanese Warrior
Samurai is a cool, unique character because he did not originate in the DC Universe but rather on the Super Friends Saturday morning cartoon. He was added to the cartoon along with Black Vulcan & Apache Chief ( who both should have also been made into Super Powers figures imo) to bring more ethnicity to the cartoon. Samurai has power action Gale-Force Spin when you press his arms together.
The World's Greatest Escape Artist
Mister Miracle's power action Wrist-Lock Escape is activated by squeezing his legs together. This is another obscure character but I like him and love the color scheme.
The Egyptian Idol
Golden Pharaoh has "Wing Action" super power when the legs are pressed together. I don't know much about this character but the figure is actually pretty nice and comes with a staff.
Orion is another figure that I did not own as a youth and not too familiar with the character either. Orion has "Power Action Astro Punch" and "Changing Face" super powers. This action figure is actually pretty cool and I could have seen myself enjoying it as a kid.
Computerized Crime Fighter
Cyclotron has "Cyclo-Spin" super power which is activated by winding up his torso then squeezing his legs. The Cyclotron character was created specifically for the Super Powers Collection. Not a big fan of this figure for a couple of reasons. There are plenty of existing characters that they could have chose to produce and there were already two Super Powers figures with "twisting" powers (Red Tornado & Samurai).
Criminal Creator of Cold
Mr. Freeze has power action Cold Blast Punch. I'm not a big fame of this figure because I thought it would have been cooler to make Captain Cold into a Super Power. Freeze reminds me too much of Lex Luthor and it just appears to be laziness on the part of Kenner in my opinion.
The Merciless Mercenary
Tyr has power action "Rocket Launch" and has a great evil look in my opinion. His super power is actually pretty interesting considering that shooting toys during that period were under a great deal of scrutiny.
