Updated on September 20, 2014

Ever Built a K'nex Roller Coaster?

Imagine the fun of this build a roller coaster game with your favorite kid. K'nex roller coasters are popular building toys. Many different models of K'nex Roller Coasters are featured here with descriptions.

K'Nex Education is an award-winning construction toy company, and they are American made. K'Nex has designed a system of plastic building pieces that snap together and form sturdy models that stand up to a great deal of handling and exploration.

K'nex roller coasters are a delight for 'kids' of all ages, and a perfect choice if you are looking for quality educational toys.

All of the K'nex roller coasters featured come with:

  • colorful illustrated step-by-step directions - no need to read, follow the pictures and color codes
  • a sturdy, clear-lidded box with dividers, making cleanup easier.
  • at least one motor that runs on batteries, not included

K'nex roller coaster kits would be best for kids at about age 8 and up. Small pieces, so beware youngsters (or pets) who might eat the colorful k'nex pieces, NOT good. However with adult assistance with the building process, I can assure you that these K'nex roller coaster models will THRILL kids of all ages. These are cool toys boys love. Hell they'll even thrill the dog or cat!

K'nex Roller Coasters are Models that MOVE!

Maybe the BEST feature is the motor than makes this an exciting working model!

K'nex Roller Coasters are WORKING Models

Fun AND learning happens with a build a roller coaster fame.

One thing that sets K'nex apart from other construction toys is that you don't just built them to sit on a shelf. Building them is only the beginning, for these models are action-packed - they MOVE! Wheels turn, propellers spin, and roller coasters rock and roll. So after they build a K'nex roller coaster, kids can can play with it. ...and they will - over and over again.

These roller coasters are also a fascinating hands-on tool for exploring physics. Kids can build many classic roller coaster models, including ones with loops, half pipes, and ball ramps. They'll learn about projectile motion, centripetal force, acceleration, conservation of energy, and experimental design as they experiment with these working models - making them excellent educational toys.

Some models are easier on the wallet than others. Pricing for these awesome K'nex Roller Coasters range from around $40 up to nearly $200, depending on the model you choose.

Most of the Knex roller coaster sets below include directions for more than one model, so there are even variations to the design plans to make more than just one creation. The structures do require batteries for the moving parts. K'nex pieces are very sturdy and seldom if ever break, so they can be used over and over again. A build a roller coaster game is sure to be a favorite.

K'nex Roller Coaster Building Tips

After building several Knex structures, here's a few tips to make it simpler.

* 1) Most of these K'nex structures are huge, so consider your space prior to building. If you build it in the middle of your living room floor you'll likely regret it later cause the kids will NOT want to remove it. You might start the building process in parts, but once you get to the part of it becoming an actual roller coaster then it will need a home, so consider that space. Maybe the corner of a kids' room, basement floor, den, table top (not in use) or... ? We even used a bunkbed once by building a platform and putting it on the top bunk. The kids didn't mind climbing up there a bit to play with their K'nex roller coaster, they loved it.

* 2) The models on this page will be too difficult for most kids under about age eight to built without help, but don't let that stop you! Kids of ANY age will be fascinated with a build a roller coaster game. Beware: Your dog or cat might go nuts! However the small parts would NOT be safe for kids under age three . With so many parts, any of these roller coasters will take awhile to build, maybe several hours. Put on some music and whistle while you work, it's worth it.

* 3) Never built a K'nex roller coaster or other K'nex model before? Know that the first is the hardest while you get used to how the pieces fit together. Have patience when building with a kid. If he/she starts to lose interest. Just take a break and come back to it later. It may take 4-5 hours, and few kids will stay focused that long, so take breaks and keep it a fun joint venture. Give the pieces funny names, listen to music while you work, crack jokes and giggle. Next thing you've created a 'k'nex kid (mine were pros by around age 8) who will no longer need your help and might just built structures that completely astound you.

These look AWESOME! Thanks for writing about them and how to make the building go more smoothly. I'm sure my daughter will get into them as she gets older. Who knows, maybe we'll start with them now. She's 6, but likes to build.
