The LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket does a great job to enhance a child's imagination by providing colorful and cheerful looking pieces that they love to pick up and play with. Intended for ages 6 to 36 months it plays cheerful music with sound effects.

What's in the Box or Maybe I Should Say Basket?

The first thing you notice about the Shapes And Sharing Basket is its bright colors. This is great for young kids especially those who it's aimed at in the 6 to 36 month age range. At that age color is a major draw and can hold attention for some time. The basket has a very friendly and cute-looking face on it and the pieces are bold and chunky.

The toy set comes with 14 items -

  • 6 plastic food items: a sandwich, a cookie, an orange, a slice of watermelon, cracker with cheese, and a slice of pie
  • 2 plates with special places for the food to fit
  • 2 smiley forks
  • 2 cups
  • 1 blanket and of course, 1 basket

Do Kids Really Learn with the LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket?

The Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket has been designed to encourage learning through play. Often toys that are designed to encourage learning end up falling short on entertainment value. However, this toy manages to cover both of these elements quite successfully.

The educational value of this toy set lies mostly in the talking basket. It has over 30 phrases and songs that teach a number of things and are all spoken / sung in a cute voice that doesn’t get annoying even when you have to listen to it over and over again!

You’ll be pleased that the Shapes And Sharing Basket does a great job of helping your child learn manners by always saying “please” and “thank you”. Plus it encourages sharing and caring as they hold picnics and tea parties with their friends.

The differently shaped pieces all fit into slots of the same shape on the plates. This reinforces understanding of shapes, and also provides your little girl with challenges that help develop her motor skills.

It also helps to teach her about shapes and colors by singing the colors of the rainbow and asking the child to find the “square” piece, the “round” piece, etc. The food pieces are in three basic shapes square, triangle, and circle. In addition, it teaches your child to understand words like “in”, “on” and “with” by telling your child to place one cup “in” another.

Does the LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket Hold Up?

This great toy set is very well constructed and the pieces are so well designed that it will last for years. You’ll be pleased to see that each is made of hard plastic which makes them durable and safe to play with. They’re also a great size for little hands to hold which makes them more fun and enjoyable for endless picnics and parties

The pieces are also very easy to clean which is great news as many parents tell of how their kids pull out the set to play with each and every day. By becoming one of your child’s favorite toys you will find they may play with the set well beyond the age of 36 months. Plus you can visit the LeapFrog website for further ideas to help your children learn as they grow.

A Couple Things Some Parents Don't Like

One customer mentioned that some pieces can fit into their child’s mouth and may present a choking hazard. Although they may fit into the mouth, it’s unlikely that the child could try to swallow them given their size. This would be something to keep an eye on as some little ones tend to put many things in their mouth. You can then decide if the pieces really look potentially hazardous.

Another objection is that the cups have a hole in them so they will not hold water. In my mind this may not be an objection but instead a good thing as spilled liquids can create pretty good messes.

My LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket Score = A

Overall this is a great product that I give a grade score of an A- The batteries in the LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket last a long time and the pieces all fit inside the basket which makes it great for storage and helps stop the pieces from getting lost.
