Lego for Preschoolers
Lego for Boys and Girls Aged 3 and 4
A selection of Lego for preschoolers. I'm Mom to two boys including a 3.5 year old preschooler. We've got a big collection of Lego and Lego Duplo. Younger preschoolers will enjoy Lego Duplo playsets and and they get older they will be able to move onto their first proper Lego sets.
This is a fun time, when kids are developing their Lego building skills. I've just seen my older son go through this stage. He's now 5 and in his first year at school and can follow Lego instructions to build complex models.
His preschooler brother is right at this stage, still having fun with Lego Duplo and also loving playing with the little Lego sets but not able to build the models from instructions yet.
On this page we'll look at some of the best Lego sets for kids aged 3 and 4.

Lego for Preschoolers - Themed Playsets
At aged 3 and 4 lots of kids start enjoying movies and themed toys. You can choose from a range of themed Duplo sets that allow kids to start building simple models and are fun to play with as a playset too.
Disney Cars is a popular theme and kids will love to make models that they recognise from the movies.

Toy Story is another popular Duplo theme for 3 and 4 year olds.

Pink Lego Duplo for Preschoolers
Somewhere around this age kids start to think pink is a girls color. As much as we might try to fight it the pink seems to be inevitable! (I have two young nieces who love pink.)
You can get Lego Duplo boxes of bricks with a pink and pastel theme.
We also love the Lego Duplo creative cakes set. This is a fun set that toddler and preschooler girls will enjoy.

Lego Princess Sets
New for 2012
The new Lego Duplo Disney Princess sets are also ideal for preschooler girls. There are sets featuring Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. These sets encourage simple Lego model building skills and are great for imaginative play.
They make great playsets for little girls who love princesses but need toys suitable for 3 and 4 year olds.

LEGO Bricks & More My First LEGO Set 5932
Somewhere around age 4 kids start to have the dexterity to play with real Lego with its smaller bricks. My younger son started playing with 'little Lego' as he calls it before he was 3 because his big brother had it.
Readiness to move on to regular Lego pieces depends on three key things:
1. Dexterity and motor skills. Can the child work with the smaller Lego bricks and put them together?
2. Temperament. Can they cope with doing something that they find tricky without getting frustrated?
3. Is there an adult around who doesn't mind helping when they get stuck. (Beware you will be called on regularly to take bricks apart or fix a broken model.)
My younger son is very easy going, so he rarely gets annoyed when he can't do something, he just brings it over and asks for help. He's 3.5 and has been playing with little Lego for a while. He still plays with Duplo a lot too though.
LEGO Bricks & More Builders of Tomorrow Set 6177
The best proper Lego set to start with is a set that has lots of the larger bricks and not all the tiny little pieces that are more suitable for older kids. This Builders of Tomorrow set is perfect and the colors are gorgeous. Your preschooler will be able to make lots of cool things with this set once they're at the right stage.
It's also worth getting a large Lego baseplate. It makes it easier to build Lego models as the pieces stay where you put them, and it also keeps half-finished creations up together.
