Lego Ninjago Sets

Updated on April 16, 2013

Ninja Lego - New for 2011 and Snake People New for 2012

A guide to the Lego Ninjago Sets. The Ninjago range is new for 2011 and it's hugely popular! It features Ninja heroes and the evil skeleton army. Find out which sets make good starter sets, main gifts and stocking stuffers.

Although it was only released in 2011 the Ninjago theme already has lots of models and can be overwhelming to parents, grandparents and other gift givers so I've tried to make it easier. I've focussed here on the Ninjago model building sets rather than the Spinjitzu game.

This range is aimed at (mainly) boys from age 6-14. Some children from age 4 will enjoy the sets if they get help with building models. There's plenty to keep the interest of older kids, especially with the larger sets and the link to the Spinjitzu game.

New for 2012: New Lego Ninjago 2012 sets with Snake People enemies.

The Beginning ...

The sets featured on this page are from the early days of the Ninjago theme with the Skeletons as the enemy. My kids have enjoyed this theme right from the start and still return to these sets.

We managed to put the Fire Temple set to one side as my boys were quite young when it came out and would have turned it into bits in no time! Now they're older we're going to get it back out for them.

They are still big fans of the early TV show episodes and the characters that go with them.

The original sets are now hard to find and can be quite costly. I wish we had bought more of them when they first came out ...

Brickmaster - Age 6+

We love the Lego Brickmaster range. The pieces fit into a book and the book includes instructions for making a set of Ninjago models. This is a lovely set for younger fans and makes a good travel set. I love that all the pieces pack back away into the box for neat storage.

Although most of the original Ninjago sets have rocketing in price, the Brickmaster one is still reasonable priced at time of writing in 2013.

LEGO NINJAGO Brickmaster (Lego Brickmaster)
LEGO NINJAGO Brickmaster (Lego Brickmaster)

The Ninjago Brickmaster includes a Kai mini figure (he's the main hero and very popular) and Frakjaw (one of the evil skeleton army.) A very good first Ninjago set which offers great play value (and Amazon has it at a very good price at time of writing.)

LEGO 2504 2505 2507 2508

The theme includes lots of big ATV type vehicles which kids love. Personally I'm less keen on these but my boys love them. They are still after some of the originals that they didn't get first time around.

These sets are now discontinued so eBay is usually the best place to get them. Expect to pay a premium for new unopened sets, but you might find a bargain on a used set if you time it right.

Fire Temple 2507

The Ninjago Fire Temple is currently the biggest set in the range and it's new for Christmas 2011 (released in August). This set includes mini figures of the most popular characters (good and evil) so it makes a great starter set and main Christmas gift. It's also a wonderful addition if you already have some of the earlier sets - this one really is the centerpiece.

It was released along with the Skull Truck which goes with it very well to create an attack scenario.

If you want a less expensive base for the Ninjago heroes then choose the Ninjago Dojo.

Read more about the Ninjago Fire Temple. We own this set and I've written a review.

Garmadon's Dark Fortress 2505

Lord Garmadon's Dark Fortress is one of the larger sets in the Ninjago range. Lord Garmadon is the lead evil character in the Ninjago universe. The Dark Fortress has lots of scary features including an attack spider and trick grave which add interest.

This set features Kai (the central hero) and his sister Nya mini figures so it's a really good set to add to the Ninjago Dojo.

It's also a good set for building up a Skeleton Army mini figure collection. You get Lord Garmadon himself, Samukai (he commands the Skeleton Amry), Bonezai and Chopov.

Spinjitzu Dojo 2504

The Spinjitzu Dojo is a key Ninjago location - it's where the heroes learn to be Spinjitzu warriors.

This set comes with 3 mini figures: Sensei Wu, Zane (the white Ninja of Ice) and General Nuckal (one of the skeleton army.)

This is a very good Ninjago Starter Set. It includes one of the skeleton army so you can have a battle to Shurikens of Ice safe from General Nuckal. And it includes Sensei Wu (he's my favorite!)

Blacksmith Shop 2508

The blacksmith shop is where it all begins. Kai is training to be a blacksmith when his life changes for ever.

This set will appeal to kids who know the Ninjago story. The set includes Kai and Kruncha (skeleton army) figures.

(I really, really wish we'd bought this when it first came out. It features right at the beginning of the story and is a very good piece to own.)

Skeleton Army Vehicles

LEGO 2506 2518 2263 2259

The theme includes lots of big ATV type vehicles which kids love. Personally I'm less keen on these but my boys love them. They are still after some of the originals that they didn't get first time around.

As with the buildings, these sets are now discontinued and hard to find in stores, but of course there's eBay.

Skull Truck 2506

The Lego Ninjago Skull Truck goes well with the Fire Temple - the Skeleton Army can mount an attack. It's also a good stand alone set for kids who enjoy vehicles - it's an off roader with big tires.

It will also nicely add to a minifigure collection with Jay and Zane (heroes) and Lord Garmadon (head bad guy) and Wyplash.

If you want a base for the Skeleton Army then look at Lord Garmadon's Dark Fortress.

Nuckals ATV 2518

General Nuckal's ATV comes with Nuckal and Kai (main hero) mini figures so it makes a good starter set for kids who love vehicles. It's also a great attack set to go with the Spinjitzu Dojo.

Turbo Shredder 2263

The Ninjago Turbo Shredder is a Skeleton Army vehicle driven by Frakjaw. You also get Jay (blue) and Cole (black) hero mini figures.

It's an impressive looking vehicle and a less expensive option that the new Skull Truck - or a great extra vehicle when friends come round to play.

Skull Motorbike 2259

This set includes a very evil skull motorbike with flame exhaust and a swat attack. The motorbike is over 11" long. And you also get Jay and Chopov minifigures. This is an impressive little set and good value for money.

Ninjago Dragon Sets

See also the Fire Temple with Fire Dragon

LEGO 2260 2509 2521

The early TV episodes led up to the four ninjas finding the dragons that matched their elements. The dragons are cleverly designed to look big and impressive but keep the costs down.

My boys have the lightening dragon set, but want the others too! And of course we have the Fire Dragon with the Fire Temple.

Ice Dragon Attack 2260

The LEGO Ninjago Ice Dragon Attack is a very popular set because it offers great value for money. You get a large Ice Dragon and Zane in his dragon armor (this is cool) and Krazi - he's one of the skeleton army and wears a jester hat.

This set makes a great gift from friends or relatives to a child who is getting one of the big sets as a main present.

Earth Dragon Defence 2509

The Ninjago Earth Dragon Defence set is a good one for dragon fans. It includes an impressive Earth Dragon and Cole mini figure - Cole is the Earth Ninja. You also get a Wyplash figure in a coolie hat.

The Earth Dragon spits fire balls and is posable with a thrashing tail. The Earth Dragon dimensions are over 4" wide and 15" long (yes it's a big dragon.)

Lightning Dragon Battle 2521

The impressive big Lightning Dragon is the central piece in this set. He's over 18" by 19". This set has 645 pieces in total so there's a lot of Lego here. You also get a skeleton army helicopter and four mini figures: Jay, Sensei Wu, Frakjaw and Kruncha.

Spinjitzu Game Sets

Some other sets also feature game elements.

LEGO 2519 2520

Then we have the training sets where the ninja can learn the martial art of Spintjitzu. These are nice sets that give you a great model to build and then a toy to play with.

Battle Arena 2520

The Lego Ninjago Battle Arena is a brilliant starter set for the Spinjitzu game. You get to build the battle arena as a Lego model and then play the game.

The set comes with Cole in dragon suit and Bonezai and spinners and everything else you need to play Spinjitzu.

Skeleton Bowling 2519

This is a fun set which is a game and Spinjitzu practice set as well as a model to build. You get Jay DX (in dragon suit) with spinner and 6 skeleton mini figures / skittles.

Small Lego Ninjago Sets

LEGO 2254 2516 2258

These smaller sets make great birthday gifts for friends, or rewards for doing chores. They are also good for younger children who would struggle to assemble the larger sets, or keep them assembled while playing.

Mountain Shrine 2254

In this set Kai trains in Spinjitzu at the Mountain Shrine. The set includes a Kai mini figure and golden spinner.

This is a good add-on to the Dojo, and a good set for fans of the Spinjitzu game.

And why oh why didn't we buy this set! It's very hard to get hold of now.

Training Outpost 2516

The Ninjago Training Outpost is a nice little set that makes a good stocking stuffer. It includes Cole (black Ninja of earth) minifigure and 5 weapons, a scorpion to trail, weapon holder and target. I've already picked up one of these for my older son as I think this one might get hard to find near Christmas.

Ninja Ambush 2258

This is a brilliant little set that includes the Kai (main hero) mini figure. It also includes Bonezai who is going to walk into an ambush. The button operated trigger lauches a surprise attack! Weapons include Bonezai's bone axe. (Again I think this one will be difficult to find near Christmas.)

We have this set and have bought it as a gift.

Thanks for Visiting
