Collecting for Fun and Memories
Collecting lighthouse replicas was a natural progression from my love of lighthouse photography. Five years ago when I retired, I decided to combine my love of photography, lighthouses and travel into a new hobby. It has been a fun experience and now I have started to collect the replicas of some of my favorite lighthouses.
As of June of 2011, I have photographed 46 lights in North America. I started with a replica of Hunting Island , which was the first lighthouse that I climbed to the top. This replica was purchased at the gift shop on the grounds of the lighthouse. My next purchase was a replica of Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. I decided that these two replicas looked lonely on my shelf so I searched eBay and purchased replicas of some of the lighthouses that I had photographed in the past.
This photograph pictures the my collection in July, 2011. From the left it has the following lights: Peggy's Cove, Drum Point, Currituck, St. Augustine, Jupiter Inlet, and Hunting Island. This lens will feature photos from some of the lighthouses I have visited and replicas of those lighthouses.
This is a beautiful replica of the Cape Florida lighthouse.
Peggy's Cove Lighthouse - Nova Scotia
Peggy's Cove Lighthouse is found in Nova Scotia. It is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Canada. I was able to visit and photograph it in 2010 and found it to be a great lighthouse to photograph. It sits out on the rocks and it is easy to capture a photo without a lot of extra things in the way.
Peggy's Cove is one of my favorite lighthouses. I have one of these figurines.
This is a wonderful replica of the Hilton Head lighthouse. It may have to be the next purchase for my collection.
Cape Hatteras is sometimes called America's Lighthouse. You see it's beautiful black and white stripes in many depictions of lighthouses. This is a must for the lighthouse collector.

Build your own lighthouse from this handy kit.
Drum Point - Maryland Lighthouse
In June 2011 we took a trip to photograph Maryland Lighthouses. I found the lighthouse at Drum Point to be particularly interesting. It has a screw-pile foundation with a lighthouse built on top of it. This foundation helps it to survive in the sandy and muddy bottom of the Chesapeake Bay. Here is a photo I took of Drum Point.
I have one of these interesting replicas in my collection. I like the different types of lighthouses.
Tybee Island Lighthouse - Georgia Lighthouse
Tybee Island lighthouse is located on Tybee Island just east of Savannah, Georgia. Here is a photograph I took of this lighthouse.
This model shows the lighthouse with the surrounding buildings.
Historic Light - St. Augustine, Florida
I was able to stop by this lighthouse and capture it both in the daylight and at night.
This is a very classic looking lighthouse with the red top and black and white stripes. I have one like this in my collection
I have purchased many of my lighthouse replicas off ebay. It is a great way to add to your collection at a reasonable price and I have always been happy with the items.
